Star Fox - Preview Thread

Im still very critical of this take on SF64, but as a Star Fox fanboy I can't ignore this game. The flesh is weak, I'm all in for it. SF64 is one of best games of all times.

I'm all about game feel over anything and Star Fox feels amazing in the hands. The controls are relatively simple but the Arwing is super mobile, you can really move around in a satisfying way to rack up scores. Then when it comes to shooting at appropriate times to rack up high scores, it can be very addictive. The game is deceptively longer than people make I out to be as well. Trying to see every planet and getting their medals will take some time.

Beyond that the presentation for the original game was oddly cinematic for a Nintendo game, especially back then. Now they've upped the presentation values 40 fold and the story looks even more compelling than it was before. I can see clear character arcs already which weren't particularly preset before as well as straight up drama. For the most part, in the original, characters spoke 1 liners at each other, in this they are clearly talking to one another.

I know you are on this journey to enjoy Nintendo franchises and I think this one just might hit the right notes for you.

That is actually exciting, sweet. Thanks!

Damn, that's one hell of a poster!

Fun fact, I imported a US N64 with a step down converter just for this game. Sold my pal UK N64 and never looked back. I got the edition with the rumble pack for my birthday and I played this game to absolute completion. Didnt take long from memory!

Simpler times!

This game was a pretty big deal to me when it came out as well. The 64 was in a software drought. I had Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire for months and months. This is exactly what I wanted, a graphical showcase, pure gameplay, sci fi shooting game. It came in that big box with the Rumble Pak. I managed to keep the box to this day and it still makes me feel hyped to look at it. Kept in the "special box" of precious old game stuff.

Hehe, I was absolutely the same.

Id got a UK N64 and was starved for content. I was obsessed with the magazine super play in the UK back then and I remember hearing somewhere the UK version was going to be a terrible PAL conversion and renamed to Lylat Wars due to a copywrite issue in the UK.

So I packed up my UK N64 and went to my local importers and traded it in for a US N64 and Starfox 64 in the big box with the rumble pack. I was so excited and played it every which way you could 😂

All secrets etc.

What a game.

Bought physical, so Amazon says it arrives on the 25

With the console I got by the end of the launch day, but third party games were all like a week later... I guess Nintendo management works side a side with distribution

what's funny to me is the multiplayer aspect will probably be a lot bigger than I ( being an old mostly single player experience guy who sees StarFox as a single player game ) expects.

From thesixthaxis:

"The avatar mode had a lot of greyed out options with clues tied to the main campaign, so I'd have a reason to aim to complete the various challenges in the game to unlock more."

Okay, that's a good incentive to keep getting challenges. Those avatars admittedly looked pretty freakin' sweet.[/Peter_Griffin]

Holy moly. For those who've never experienced Star Fox, I can only imagine a poster like this would have their curiosity running wild.

There is a lot of reverence for Star Fox within this poster. This will not be one and done. The vibe is so different from the lead up to Assault and Zero. Both constantly had questionable to negative press. This is something else and it's all good. Star Fox has a future.

Star Fox gives me the same feel as all the good Platinum games: All Killer No Filler, made to play through over and over and over again, chasing new secrets, paths, unlockables and high scores.

Anybody else find the button press for the loop being more fiddly than the 64 version? I've only played it once and am writing it off as the tutorial blocking moves at certain points, but it wasnt perfect on the level either.
Maybe I need to build better muscle memory on the higher fps here. Using the n64 pad.

You can just do the loop and U-turn with a single d-pad press now. There is nothing to time, just a tap. The old button combos work, but make sure it's turned on in the options/settings.
