The official Crossgen Rant thread

Ok so i thought this deserve its own topic, everyone:

Honestly i used to be one of the people here saying to other angry people like SlimySnake SlimySnake to be a bit patient, but now i'm starting to lose it also tbh. Yes i'm excited about GOWR, but can't denied i'm a bit disappointed specially after reading the Washington preview:

"It also very much feels like a game built first for the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 5 features a solid-state drive that many hoped would be the end of loading screen “masks,” essentially gameplay elements that hide when the console is loading assets for the next part of the game. In “God of War,” this often came in the form of squeezing through cracks in walls.
In the first several hours, Kratos and his son Atreus slide through several cracks in several walls at virtually every in-game location. The first disguised loading screen happens less than half an hour in. While Sony first revealed “Ragnarok” as a PS5 title, spending one hour with the game makes it loud and clear this was designed first for the PlayStation 4."

We're about to enter 3 rd year of PS5 and Hermen is still saying there will be more crossgen? Honestly if they will announce another new Single player game that will be crossgen Sony will totally lose their reputation of being the company that pushed the boundaries (i mean tbh they already are losing it just saying)

Remember that legendary video of Mark that sells dreams

No, Cerny wasn't lying or anything, instead it was truth, genuine and exciting, but we aren't seeing much concrete stuffs of his talk because of the corporate decisions like Jimbo & Hermen to keep doing Crossgen, there will also be consequences, yup, cause when PS6 will be announce with all the new tech, no matter how awesome the tech will be but Sony would have lost credibility as wise people know all that tech won't be used anytime soon because of Crossgen as people will remember how fucking long the crossgen cycle was long AF in the previous gen.

Thought? Express yourself and fire all you rant about Crossgen

Unless we are having a massive overhaul, nothing.

Current consoles arent that powerful to do full raytracing. SSD on both system however would minimize the loading time, which is the best benifit for this gen.

Other then that, nothing much.

Apparently Sprinter Cell Double Agent was a lot better for Xbox, than it was for Xbox 360. I played the latter, and never new this til like a year ago.

I'm guessing the PC port is based off the Xbox 360 port, and not the Xbox port. And I doubt the Xbox port is BC. So I may never play it.

I agree with your take completely. The fact is that there was literally no reason to buy the consoles on release considering the marginal improvements over the previous generation. Sure, the loading times are quite a bit quicker in many instances, and graphics are somewhat better, but what's the point of these new consoles if the old ones are still sticking around?

I think that it's safe to say that many of us adopters of the current gen are starting to feel a bit shafted because there are next to no exclusives and the older generation is hamstringing these crossgen games.

Ditching HD is the best thing happened to this gen.
I am not gonna sit around for 5min loading time.

Did we really ditch HD though, considering some of these games on the Series S have dynamic resolutions that go all the way down to 720p?

Edit: I am not trying to start a console war here. I actually have a Xbox Series S and I think it's a great little console considering the size and price.

I cannot wait to play my $70 prettier version of one of the best (if not the best) looking PS4 dlc games on my PS5.

I am joking lol. I have pre-ordered GOW Ragnarok few days ago.

A victim of their own successes.

The install base is far too large on PS4 to ignore coupled with the limited supply of PS5 over the last two years they were severely hamstrung and therefore had to release most games cross gen.

Another element to this is why they should always aim for cutting edge tech in each console generation , the arch of a console will always keep it competitive but when it comes to the end of a gen that tech is holding games back significantly, the jaguar proccessors in the PS4 and Xbox were horrible choices and meant that this generation the upgrade was only significant compared to last gen but normal compared to the CPU market , same with the GPU.

Basically my point is they underpowered the PS4 and it’s had a knock on effect on modern consoles and games.

Loading time is what matters the most for gamers.
Old gen, you had to wait your friends to load for lobby. Now its instant.
I'm on board with you. I bought an SSD for my PS4 Pro just to have somewhat better load times. I have a PS5, Xbox Series X, and my wife has a Series S. We moved over to current gen for the loading times, but also for what these machines will be capable of once we've moved on from last gen.

Performance wise, I'm happy with the PS5. Even though games so far don't represent a huge graphical leap, the sheer fact that most of the games I play and want to play can clock 60fps is a game changer to me.

But I aint a graphical simp, so, yeah.

Which is why as hyped as I'm for Ragnarok I'm not buying it at launch. $70 is for next gen games, not for what takes literally 10 seconds in any modern PC game (changing the resolution and framerate cap)

It's not about the graphics, graphics are often one of the most scalable aspects of games. It's mostly stuff like that GOW thing, needing those constant annoying hidden loading screens because the game needs to be designed for the slow HDD on the Ps4.

It's the same with something like FF7 Remake part 2. I'm excited it's next gen only not because of the graphic but because this time the level design might not resemble a PSP game.

Cross gen is bad, but we’re all looking forward to playing Resi Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2 remakes. Technology doth not make good game.

Cyberpunk 2077 with an NVMe SSD is a very different experience from Cyberpunk 2077 with an HDD. That's perhaps the best example of a game built the other way around: first for current-gen and then adapted to last gen. Look how that turned out, not only in reception but in performance too.

Storage speed is a tricky evolution jump, because unless you make the game flat out not run on an HDD, you'll still segregate the ecosystem, even within a platform like PC.

The situation is very different in this generation.

Sony and all devs couldn't wait to ditch the PS3.

Pandemic, chip shortage, inflation and war in Europe has a negative impact on evolution in general.

The majority of console gamers are still on last-gen consoles.

I've had PS5 since release, but I know how tough the situation is for so many people, that I can't be mad about crossgen. I'm spoiled and I will not advertise it for the sake of the less fortunate.

I also believed those shitty sequences masking loading screens would disappear with PS5 and, as Cerny said, will allow gameplay designs impossible in past generations. But no, games are exactly the same but prettier. And sadly not enough prettier to forget the lie Sony told about "we believe in generations" only to mock Microsoft.

I'll wait until anyone tells me in detail how eight gen is having a negative impact in gameplay possibilities and how 9th geb games will lead us to a new era of gameplay never seen before.

Outside of VR of course.

Long live cross gen!!

I've been more than impressed with the games I'm playing at 60fps, some at 120fps like MW2.

I think they are good lookers & the faster load times have been an absolute godsend.

Also most the crossgen games look much better than next gen only games currently.

The upcoming resident evil 4 and gow:Ragnarok both look incredible.

But some people will never be happy I guess XD

Is this the WWHHAAAA thread?

Every one knows the first few years of a new generation there will be cross gen titles. Maybe for this generation it might be longer due to all sorts of issue’s going on in the world.

COVID, LOCKDOWNS, CHIP SHORTAGES, INFLATION, WARS, and the looming ECONOMIC DEPRESSION.

I won’t lose any sleep playing GoW:R cross gen title over it not being purely a PS5 title.

They both are BC, and yes the OG Xbox is very very good.

Why did you buy a ps5 then? It's non sensical to buy a ps5 and think about "those poor ps4 players" instead of yourself

Various sources have stated that SSD can revolutionise game design though. Unless that was just bullshit Sony had them say to boost sales.

stop gobbling up all the PR BS at launch and you will be happy.

you are not getting graphical jumps like older previous gens. just accept it.

We saw its influence a bit already, just nothing transformative yet. Like in Spider-Man they no longer needed little buffer areas between interiors and the exterior open world (the pointless hallway or elevator that gives the app time to dump memory and load what's coming, etc). Ratchet and Clank showed how entire levels are just seconds away now, if not instant.

I just wish Sony would commit more of their studios to designing games only for the PSr5 moving forward. Too many games are cross gen, so all we get for the PS5 version is the same PS4 Pro game with slightly better graphics, possibly RT, and typically 60 fps. It's getting old.

Edit: oh yea, and haptics and no load times. All nice, but we need a new gen already

It can.
Traveling to multiple worlds, adding more complex cities and maps(dungeons), more crowded npc. The ideas are limiteless. Its up to devs, on what they can achieve.

The hard drive has limits, but the SD doesnt as of now.

I just wish we get to the point, where you travel between cities without any loading, and get in to the game instant.

I mean what else is there to discuss? To anyone with a brain its obvious that games designed to run on 2012/3 hardware would limit what the next gen version of said game could do without developing two different versions of it. I don't get why people have a hard time accepting that. Im not saying a cross gen game is bad or looks bad just for the sole reason of being cross gen, im just saying you are not seeing the full potential of what it could have been.

I dont bitch for the sake of bitching. Its the same thing with Sonys showcase this year. It was important for Sony to show what’s cooking because we know this is not just a two year thing. It’s potentially a 3-4 maybe 5 year issue, and the fact that they chose to skip this year is even more disturbing. It shows they are just as poorly prepared as Microsoft. Everwild, hellblade, perfect dark, avowed, fable, state of decay all in limbo… likely all 2025 releases seeing as how they didn’t get shown this year despite being revealed over 2 years ago.

man its almost 2023, this pandemic thing is over, even in the US. yall can't keep blaming it forever

God of War said it was supposed to be out last year, which maybe, maybe not they could have actually hit that, but it's still a first-cycle engine game, cross-gen or otherwise.

For a God of War Ragnarok to have been totally different and totally custom-made for PS5, it wouldn't have come out in 2021 or 2022. Similar to how God of War 3 came out three years after PS3's launch (which was already a year after Xbox 360's launch, where some of these later-cycle engine technologies got devised after first-cycle 360 and PC games came out.)

Spider-Man, they eliminated some of those buffer areas in Miles Morales and yet it was still cross-gen.

Ratchet and Clank still had a "pointless hallway" in between levels despite the power of PS5, they were just hallways that you just fell through vertically, very quickly.

(Pocket Dimensions used a version of familiar stitched-together level-swapping techniques, which was really cool and done in interesting ways not achieved before but it wasn't necessarily SSD magic that made this work; the Pocket Dimensions existed concurrently in the main levels, they didn't instantly stream out of nowhere.)

Huh? I bought it because I could. Like most things.
If all you got from my post, were "these poor PS4 players" you should take a good look within yourself.
I'm pointing out to you how your attitude towards ps5 and cross gen makes no sense. You bought a ps5 because you wanted more out of gaming than what the ps4 pro could provide. Here we are two years later and instead of being rightfully mad that Sony isn't taking advantage of the hardware, you're more concerned with ps4 owners getting left out. That attitude is only enabling Sony to completely fail on their own promises back in 2020 when the ps5 was first being marketed and hyped. The people who can't afford or can't find a ps5 now will eventually be able to. It just makes no sense to identify more with them when you spent all that money on a ps5.

You didn't buy a ps5 "just because you could". That's meaningless. You bought it because you wanted more advanced graphics, performance, and games. Sonys now got your money. You've fulfilled your end of the bargain buy they're not fulfilling theirs. They're not making these games cross gen out of the kindness of their hearts they're doing it for profit while shafting ps5 adopters.

So what are the two other platforms excuse for not having ‘next gen’ games? 🤔
I don't have a Switch so i don't care. And i haven't bought an Xbox since 2008 and don't plan to buy one anytime soon considering what MS are doing.

Why is it always this excuse of "the other also do nothing" stuff. This doesn't justify the BS of infinite crossgen by Sony.

Some indés devs already making full next gen games, but Sony still blocked to PS4 gen and can't move on.
