Introduction to Twitch Plays Pokemon
Twitch Plays Pokemon is the largest multiplayer game of all time. Conceived by an anonymous Australian programmer, the series started with Twitch Plays Pokemon Red, the classic 1996 Game Boy game. The ROM was linked up to the Twitch livestream chat, such that when a Twitch user types any control input (such as "up", "a", or "start"), the game takes in that command. The game rapidly went viral, spiralling to a peak of over 100,000 users. The input system became built upon and elaborated, split between variations - the most prominent of the two being anarchy (the original system), and democracy. Under democracy, the most commonly typed command over the last time period is the one chosen - making it a slower but more reliable alternative to anarchy. Now, the series has gone through Red and Crystal - meaning you're just in time to jump on board for Emerald!
How to Play
Couldn't be simpler! As said above, just type in the relevant directional inputs - "up", "down", "left", "right", "a", "b", "start", and "select" - note that they have to be in all lower-case. Under democracy, you can also 'chain' commands - for example, upleftright will make the character go up, then left, then right. Additional democracy-only commands include 'wait', which causes a slight pause before the next command, and 'anarchy', which restores anarchy if successful. Finally, in democracy using a number from 2-9 after a command will repeat that command - for example, the infamous start9 presses start 9 times (and was used to break democracy under the early systems). One last thing to remember - Twitch streams lag behind real events! Lag of at least 20 seconds is to be expected - take that into account.

The Lore
Arguably the best part of Twitch Plays Pokemon, a complex and engaging narrative has developed around our protagonists. The original, Pokemon Red, saw the voices (Twitch) take control of Red with the aim of reviving the Helix Fossil and bringing about the physical manifestation of the Lord Helix to this earth. The sequel, Pokemon Crystal, saw the voices turn against the very god they'd created, and take control of AJ Downey (Gold) with the aim of slaying the physical manifestation of the Helix and restoring balance to the world once more. And now, we move on to Pokemon Emerald. Who knows what the next story will be? Who will become our new friends, companions? Who will be sacrificed on the great altar of the P.C. devourer? Join us and find out!
