Only a 10% share in its second most important market are quite worrying figures.
I honestly don't know why they still bother selling consoles at this point
Nobody cares

I'm assuming that graph includes digital for the other publishers but not Nintendo .Analysis of the software sales based on the data included in this 2023 UK report provided by enpleinjour from Installbase:
Physical vs Digital
Console vs PC
- Console Full Game revenue: 40% Physical : 60% Digital
- 34% Physical including PC
- Full game revenue : 84% console, 16% PC
- Gaming hardware access. : 81% console, 19% PC
- 1.4M PS accessories
- 1M XB accessories
ERA 2022 PC (1,000s) Total (1,000s) PC ratio Elden Ring 181 865 0.21 GTAV 101 816 0.12 RDR 100 355 0.28 LEGO 69 817 0.08 ERA 2023 Hogwarts 225 1,921 0.12 Diablo 4 224 443 0.51 Jedi S 57 553 0.10 COD MW3 161 1,239 0.13 GTAV 135 616 0.22 RDR2 108 412 0.26 EAFC 24 61 2,396 0.03
PC ratios continue to be really low. New releases like Jedi having just 10% of sales on PC, EA, the biggest UK game only 3%. Hogwarts only 12%.
Even that Diablo split seems a bit surprising, would have expected 60-70% on PC.
UK is just not a big market for PC.
Software
- COD continues its decline, this year is a -36% decline. MW3 console sales are close with Vanguard, lowest COD sales since 2008
- EA likely had one of its best years in history, Top 20 sales are ~4M, not that far from ATVI+Nintendo+SONY combined!
- ATVI can't stop the COD bleed but D4 did very well.
- UBI still down in the dumps with a lack of output and big sellers
- Nintendo should be closer to last year, a lot of competition this year so the Top 20 misses part of their usual evergreens
- SONY had a drop of output, GOWR legs are very good, expected SM2 to do more and outsell the original considerably, but the installbase seems like a real factor there.
1st Calendar Year sales:
[2017] Assassin's Creed II - 920,910
[2017] Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - 880,775
[2017] Assassin's Creed Origins - 679,965 (20.4% digital)
[2018] Assassin's Creed Odyssey - 305,937***
[2020] Assassin's Creed Valhalla - 693,367 (40.1% digital)
[2023] Assassin's Creed Mirage - 352,228 (51.3% digital)
Resident Evil Village - 331,252
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - 354,257
Resident Evil 4 Remake - 321,117
Elden Ring - 865,262
LEGO SS - 817,299
Hogwarts - 1,921,143
FF15 - <250,000 (phy only)
TR:SoTR - 226,125 (phy only)
Avengers - 380,596 (33.8%)
FF7R - < 320,000
GoTG - 192,576 (27.4%)
FF16 - <142,000
Skyrim - 1,138,000
Fallout 4 - 1,126,000
Starfield - 142,000
The numbers should include the digital ones on Switch, since WB shares digital figures.Tbh, while the other charts are more or less what I expected, the low amount of PC sales was what suprised / even shocked me most. I expected them way higher then that.
I guess that for example Hogwarts does not even contain the digital Switch sales (he seems to have no access to those numbers), so the PC share for this game is most likely even lower for games than mentioned here.
Are the PC numbers higher for other territories?
Starfield made it to the PC charts but not to the combined chart.
That means Xbox sales were less than ~150k for it.
Look at the top 20 physical to digital shares. 44% physical to 56% digital.
But but physical is irrelevant folks are yet again proven wrong. Unless they want to neglect the 44% of the consumers who bought physical games.
Even on PC, it sold (93K) what TLOU Part 2 sold (93K) on PlayStation in its 4th year.
I remember certain people here predicting that Starfield will outsell Spider-Man 2.
Overall, glad to see such high physical sales ratio.
This shows that Microsoft publishing their games on other platforms is NOT a bad business decision.
More so, Microsoft probably has even more robust data on their performance in other markets, forecasting figures, costs, etc and they thoroughly analysed it and came to a conclusion to publish on other platforms.
How can anyone see this and still think games like Starfield isn’t going to other platforms.
Hard to imagine next gen consoles without some kind of disk drive option at this point
Yep. And this is before TLOU 2 Remastered, which sold even more.I remember people on GAF saying that TLOU2 sold badly because of #GoWokeGoBroke
Yet look at what we have here. Anybody want to explain why Starfield (the supposed GOTG) didn't sell more than TLOU2 in its 4th year?
Gp fanatics are the worst Xbox fanboys. And this is Xbox' second strongest market and one of the two last 'strongholds'.
Reality is catching up real quick.
Edit:
That goes for all the GP/all-digital fanatics as well.
On one hand I'm surprised Xbox sold as many consoles as they did in 2023. But on the other, some of the data shows them getting totally spanked by PlayStation and Nintendo, even worse than I imagined. Surprised too at how low PC sales are. But yeah, Xbox aren't doing well at all, especially considering this is supposedly one of their better regions.
Yeah I did notice the decline year on year, even with any stock restrictions fully resolved now too. Not good.in 2022, the XBS console sales declined -15% YoY
in 2023, it also declined -10% from 2022
2 consecutive declines in the console's 3rd year from launch are catastrophic no matter how you slice it.
And yet probably less catastrophic than the declines in other European countries.in 2022, the XBS console sales declined -15% YoY
in 2023, it also declined -10% from 2022
2 consecutive declines in the console's 3rd year from launch are catastrophic no matter how you slice it.

UK Games Market UKIE Report 2023
The figures
- UK games consumer market value: £7.82 billion (+4.4% year-on-year)
- Software sales: £5.18 billion (+4.1% year-on-year)
- Hardware sales: £2.22 billion (+2.1% year-on-year)
- Revenue from film, TV, and soundtracks based on game IPs: £124 million
The highlights
While overall game sales were up in the UK in 2023, boxed sales have continued their decline and were down 5% to £495 million compared to 2022. Looking at digital sales more precisely, digital console software sales were up 5.6% to £2.48 billion, and digital PC software sales increased 4.5% year-on-year to £684 million. Mobile sales were also up, reaching £1.52 billion following a 4.5% growth.
When it comes to hardware sales, consoles had a particularly strong year, with sales increasing 12% compared to 2022 to £951 million. PC, on the other hand, showed quite a decline, with sales decreasing 11% year-on-year, falling to £673 million.
Omdia senior analyst James McWhirter gave a bit more detail: "Digital spend within the UK's console market returned to growth in 2023 as PlayStation 5 hardware sales volumes hit their stride, while Nintendo Switch remained remarkably resilient as a bumper lineup of first party software propped up active users and spend on the now seven-year-old platform."
He also noted the success of games including Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom, EA Sports FC 24, and Baldur's Gate 3, which all contributed to the health of the market.
Dorian Block, from data firm GfK Entertainment, added that the decline in boxed software sales was actually "better than expected," due to strong releases and the "Zelda effect" on Switch. He added that PS4/PS5 boxed sales overtook Switch sales in 2023 in the UK.
"Total sales achieved a higher overall [average selling price] than any other year on record (£36 overall)," he continued, still talking about boxed sales. "This was achieved by the fact that there were 17 major titles in 2023 that remained above £50 over the entire year (accounting for 34% of 2023 revenue), compared to just 8 titles in 2022 (accounting for 21% of 2022 revenue)."
Meanwhile, accessories sales grew 3% to £402 million, and VR hardware sales increased 11% to £194 million.
UKIE's report included revenue coming from digital film and TV based on video game properties for the first time, creating a new vertical the trade body called the "broader game culture sector," including toys, merchandise, books, magazines, film, TV, soundtracks, events, and streaming content. This sector saw a revenue of £418 million in 2023 in the UK.
Revenue from games soundtrack as well as TV and film adaptations reached £124 million in 2023, while events revenue surged 140% to £10.3 million – a success UKIE attributed to events including Pokémon Go Fest and Apex Legends Global Series.
UKIE CEO Nick Poole, commented: "Once again, the report showcases the vitality of interactive entertainment in the UK in the face of significant challenges."
He acknowledged both this "positive trajectory" but also the layoffs affecting the industry, and reiterated UKIE's commitment to support the UK games industry.
He added: "The video game industry continues to evolve rapidly, presenting both challenges and opportunities. As we continue to see changing patterns of consumer behaviour in how people buy and play games, these figures give us real confidence that games will continue to pioneer tomorrow’s frontiers in entertainment, learning and participation."
Source 1 & Source 2
Not a single mention of Xbox whatsoever in the new data. Just shows how irrelevant the console has become in that market. Quite crazy to think about, it's a Saturn-level collapse.
But not only was it omitted in pertains to hardware growth; it was also omitted in software talks. And that's the real problem the platform's been having this gen: heavily declining software sales. There simply aren't enough Xbox owners buying games (at launch) at high enough frequency or generating enough revenue. That goes for 1P and 3P titles.
I'd say that's more so the reason Microsoft are pivoting to a multiplatform publisher strategy than the hardware sales. I mean, yeah the hardware sales are low, but other consoles in the past have had lower hardware sales while doing much better with software attach rates (Wii U & Saturn (mainly in Japan/Asia) for example) of new games. Game Pass has really conditioned many of the remaining hardcore/core enthusiasts and even casuals/mainstream who would be buying more games, to just....not buy them.

Yeah, the Xbox console is irrelevant. Better to exclude it than to talk about the downward decrease in percentage. Not a good look for MS.
I also notice they don't even mention subscriptions such as Gamepass which MS was pushing down everyone's throats and the people who are marketing Gamepass in many threads here (they shall not be named but the username starts with an A ) . It's also irrelevant to the overall picture.
Well we just had someone try telling us playing MS games on a PS5 is actually us playing them on an Xbox, so if the grassroots narrative is evolving, I'm sure it will for industry pundits soon enough
I hate the fact that you will be proven right on this. The stupid industry folks on all gaming podcasts will push this PS gamer playing Microsoft games are actually Xbox gamers narrative going forward. It's so silly and dumb, but they'll try to make it stick. Now it's all about the MAUs.
I stumbled upon that thread and I legitimately thought it was satire. Is the sunken cost fallacy really that hell of a drug that people are willing enough to meme themselves to oblivion?Well we just had someone try telling us playing MS games on a PS5 is actually us playing them on an Xbox, so if the grassroots narrative is evolving, I'm sure it will for industry pundits soon enough
Skyrim - 1,138,000
Fallout 4 - 1,126,000
Starfield - 142,000
UK folks are HUGE Marvel fans. I expect Wolverine to have significant sales as well. But they told me that GP increased game sales.
Starfield sold about 142k in the UK for 2023, a compete disaster.
FF16 sold around 140k.
Let`s not pretend that`s a rule though. See Helldivers with their 60-40 split in favor of PC.
Different games/genres simply speak to different demographics.
That's because they were fed a constant "FF16 sold x% lower than FF blah blah" in coverage. Yet, like I said in the other thread, if anybody gloating at this actually covered or looked at games like FM, or Starfield in the same way they'd see percentages far worse than anything out there.Wasn't Starfield 2/3 on PC (at launch anyway), or was that Europe? I remember some people saying FF16 bombed and Starfield was doing great.
Skyrim - 1,138,000
Fallout 4 - 1,126,000
Starfield - 142,000
The source is listed at the bottom (gsd and gfk) . It's not a "claim". The difference is that they're looking at games that were available in both physical and digital and the user had a choice of both. This excludes the games that release digital only like a lot of smaller releases which skews the overall platform figures to 70+%.How has this report got it's data? Afaik none of the console platforms reveal their digital sales data.
I must admit I'm surprised they claim physical has that much of a share. But how do they know?
thats literally Gen-Z
Kids actually love Xbox but I think they have so many other choices to play the gamesthats literally Gen-Z
i forgot the:Kids actually love Xbox but I think they have so many other choices to play the games
hmm another pc gaming market decline, interesting.
By the way, the PC software sales data is abysmal. For instance, out of 1.9 million copies, Hogwart's Legacy sold only 224K on PC. That's 11.6% on PC vs. 88.4% on consoles.
Yet we keep hearing people say "Oh, X company is leaving soooo much money on the table by not releasing their games on PC."
This is the data we need to use the next time someone says that Nintendo needs to release their games on PC or Sony needs to release their games on PC day one.
To be fair, this is UK sales data and the cost of PC components in the UK is bloody obscene.
You'd pay the price of a new kidney just for a mid-tier GPU.
Fuck that shitty extortionate USD:GBP 1:1 pricing!
So this is the ammo that you need to war? Cool.By the way, the PC software sales data is abysmal. For instance, out of 1.9 million copies, Hogwart's Legacy sold only 224K on PC. That's 11.6% on PC vs. 88.4% on consoles.

It's actual sales data from the UK. Steam CCU is global concurrent users which is much lower than actual sales. Not even sure where that data is from but Hogwarts Legacy peaked at over 527K concurrent users on Steam and that’s with a staggered early access release. It did pretty well.
Steam divulges their sales data? Wasn’t even aware of this. It's actual sales data from the UK. Steam CCU is global concurrent users which is much lower than actual sales.
The publisher does from all stores including from platforms like steam.Steam divulges their sales data? Wasn’t even aware of this.
War? Posting actual data is now warring? lol.So this is the ammo that you need to war? Cool.

Utterly irrelevant to my point. I claimed he wants to use the data to platform war and he does. You said nothing to refute it.Hes not wrong. PC is a very tiny market in the UK. Dont be mad at the facts. The numbers dont lie.

Oh, but it didn't stop there. If he had just claimed, "Wow, PC is small in the UK," that would have been fine, but he went, "This is the kind of data we need to fight back against PC gamers." How is that not platform warring lmao?Stating facts = console war?
From Installbase.
Surprised to see the game of the generation Starfield so close to FF16, which according to some people underperformed.
And Forza below Immortals of Aveum
