I asked the reporter why he did that.
He said it was to add provenance to an explosive dossier. Even if that might be "inconvenient" to "some people"

TBH I don't understand his thinking at all and he avoided answering a follow up question as to whether there was a process in the newsroom for deciding such things.

Steele could have been killed, and has to hide under an sssumed identity. He may not even be able to testify. The dossier had provenance as it came from the US government itself. The FBI was going to pay him to continue digging. Why out him?

If the Russians do that, they remove all doubt, don't they? They would have had a much better chance trying to stop him from collecting all of this, or if you want to go down the rabbit hole, finding a way to neutralize him earlier in his act of enterprise if possible.

Steele mysteriously dying before he's able to give testimony would be seen as validating what he had to say. Based on how they operated in the Cold War, the most likely play from Russian intelligence would be an attempt to discredit him or sew sufficient confusion and disinformation that people are unsure of what to believe.
