I know this is NPD but why hasn't Sony given us an update on Worldwide PS4 numbers? Surely they've passed their 5 million estimate.

17.1% of Nintendo publisher software revenues were from Wii U this month.

Gaming as a hobby is fine, it is the AAA business that is going sour. And that's fine. There are almost no mid tier publishers left, we are overdue for a correction that brings back middle-budget games.

Actually, this doesn't look good for PS3 to cover the 20mil to surpass Wii now. Generation officially over?

Not exactly an original opinion, especially in the last 5-10 years.

Never said it was original. :)

Holy hell, last generation is bombing like a rock. That's what happens when the consoles never got to less than 200 dollars officially.

Whelp, that's all folks!

I wish Steam would enter the console race. Digital needs a shake up in a big way in the console realm.

MS and Sony have both been doing pretty well with sales and free games. I've bought loads of Games on Demand titles for $20 each. While that sounds like it may be a lot it is cheap for GoD which had a reputation of always being full price all the time.

PS3 > Wii U > 360

The % drops aren't unexpected... a new generation was launched and 7th gen console is nowhere close to have the legz of PS2...

What is happening with PS360 right now happened with Wii when the Wii U was launched.

If a game like Tomb Raider sold 4-5 million on a combined userbase of 160 million consoles and underperformed expectations, what is the sequel going to sell on a combined userbase of 80 million with ever-increasing costs to model Lara's hair and eyebrows and finger nails? Sony might be fine, but the entire industry is going to contract and change - hopefully for the better.

If the industry contracts that's likely to lead Sony to contract. At the moment the industry still has momentum but if things become unviable you could see investors leaving and publishers not having the leverage to go ahead with projects. Even Sony are reliant on third parties providing a library of games. Death for third parties = Death for Sony

The though of a return to the one console future excites me. The Ps1 and 2 eras were ages of enlightenment I feel. Not going to happen me-thinks, but man would it be nice.

It will come down to the userbase and whether they buy a wide variety of games. It's something that worries me, I remember my friends gobbling up those Japanese games like Square JRPGs and such for their PS2s. Are the new generations of gamers open to trying many different kinds of video games? That is what it will take for a situation in which diversity flourishes, not the hardware being attractive, but the people who use that hardware playing a variety of games. I did get my first PlayStation (PS4) on January 31st so maybe I contributed to the January NPD :p

If someone took the time to take some screens from the Dec thread vs this one you could have some comedic gold.

"Hah, people said console gaming was doomed."
"Hah, remember when people said console gaming wasn't doomed?"

These are really bad numbers for the console industry as a whole.

I think if it's going to survive, it may be in the Steam Machine model: A single gaming ecosystem with multiple SKUs of different power and purpose. There wouldn't be any such thing as a "new" console per se, although you would probably need to buy a new system eventually for the more powerful games. They might simplify it some from the Steam Machine model by having specific specs for low, middle, and high-end models so games could run more consistently.

But it does seem like the current model of discrete hardware generations, with library resets for each one, is harder and harder for people to justify in this day and age.

The 360 and PS3 are finally dead.

Eh active userbase is pretty different though.

These consoles are 8 years old AND still really expensive. It's not that surprising that their sales are imploding as soon as the shiny new successors come out. We are much more likely to see MS and Sony just discontinue production before they ever hit $99 or even $149.

I'm kind of surprised it took PS3 this long to overtake 360 in a monthly selling period considering how dominant the SW has been but it shows how well MSFT marketed and sold the 360. If it was based on SW support PS3 should have been winning a long while ago.

Upcoming games for the PS4:

Feb:
Thief
Rayman Legends

March:
inFAMOUS: Second Son
Putty Squad
Dynasty Warriors 8
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

April:
Final Fantasy XIV: A REALM REBORN

May:
MLB 14: The show

So I'm getting one game over the next 4 months (Infamous). Well my wallet will be happy. Anything decent coming out in the Summer months? june/july/aug

Not that it would make a huge difference but both PS360 are way over priced at this point

Also shouldn't we consider software releases when comparing this years Jan to last years? Not much released this year on home consoles but iirc there were a few noteworthy titles last year

No wonder MS PR went software for their focus. The hardware numbers are bowel watering.

Drive club and watch dogs will be out by then.
