Basically a proper 2D and 3D hybrid game where both space control and time control matters a lot.

Have you played the Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen games?

They aren't balanced well, but they are the closest so far to an actual 2d/3d hybrid imo.

Gat dayum, OMG(or H) just ran the gauntlet against 3 of London's best SF4 players. Now he's up against Ryan Hart, aka England's Final Boss.

EDIT: Eh, I'm kind of disappointed Ryan went with Yun. He's playing to win, and I don't blame him for that. It's just that I wanted to see Oni vs Sagat.

Yeah same, is Oni a bad match for Sagat? I guess Onis midrange game is stronger?

You mean the Naruto Ninja Storm games?

I have played them and while they are better than DBZ games they are still too cinematic in their game play for me to take them seriously. Great visuals and presentation though.

No. GNT was Takara Tomy's Naruto series on GC/Wii

If you guys were hyped for OMH murdering people, imagine how I felt standing with the SFO guys right behind the setup. Dude is a beast, and he isn't even an experienced tournament player. He was told to come after getting some ranking points!

OK I just saw some match videos and you guys are right this really is a hybrid 2D/3D fighter. Well the jumps are still low and floaty with limited air mobility but this is definitely in line with what I had in mind. I like the faster pace as well and of course it's flashy and has air combos.

This would probably have gotten some traction if it was more polished and was on other consoles.

I think it's considered a even match up. But if I were to guess which one had a advantage I would actually say Oni. For the same reason you just mentioned, a stronger mid range game. Plus I don't think Ryan wanted to deal with Oni shenanigans. With Yun he can just rush him the fuck down and not have to worry about gimmicks as much since he's not playing a fireball war.

Is this his first appearance in a big tournament? Sounds like he's never attended a event outside of his locals.

Valmaster chose U1 to make Ryan stop throwing fireballs. Well why doesn't Ryan do the same thing and choose Sagat's U2? He would stop Chun from throwing all her fireballs as well at mid range.

And now it's too late since he lost. But maybe U2 would have been the better choice since landing TU, FADC, U1 won't happen as often sine Chun is such a defensive character.

Best DBZ game was Budokai 3....obviously.....

My nigga!

3D fighters are usually beat as fuck imo. Feel to clunky and slow. I also don't like that the opponent can move anywhere. Just feels off to me. But hey, if you like it, keep on playing! I may give tekken a shot though.

I feel that the presence of weapons in Soul Calibur eases/rationalizes a lot of the clunkiness of 3D fighters in general. Generally, combat has always felt smoother in SC over Tekken for me; juggles are even slightly less funky looking.

Usually though like people have said anything feels clunky when you don't understand it. 2D fighters are like that to me for the most part.

To me it's mostly Tekken that feels more clunky and slow than the others.

Although, I never spent enough time to be amazing at movement in that game though.

mmmm look at that.

For just smash though?

Bayo2 is getting me so hard. also MH3U is only so fun offline on 3DS :/
Also monkey kong country and W101 and mario 3d world.

And I just found out you can transfer your Wii VC stuff over and I have some really good games on there. So i can just make the switch I think.

Fighting games outside of SF will never be mainstream. It's too complicated of a genre and SF is the only one that removes that entry barrier. Look at the other two arguably most popular games right now, CoD and LoL.

Players have this stupid honor code when it comes to fighting games. We've seen the weak asz gamefreak messages and all that stuff. No one wants to learn wavedashing in Tekken, or the in and outs of VF besides someone already into fighting games.

As someone who liked fighters before 2009 this is funny to hear. I mean, I have memories of trying to get my tekken friends to play alpha 3 with the response being, "you can't combo in this game." And it makes sense because juggles in tekken are easier to wrap your head around instead of chains, links, canceling into supers, etc.

There's nothing about current Street Fighter that's more friendly to the masses other than it being fun to watch. Since the ip is the current genre leader, people find reasons to justify how it's designed after they're in love with the game, not before.

You don't need combos to play Street Fighter casually. It's a far simpler game to get into - the depth comes later.

Tekken has not been growing its marketshare and is currently selling to the same (shrinking) based of customers year after year - to the point where they're terrified of removing characters because it might anger a fanbase.

My post was from the perspective of someone that actually wants to seek out and learn games. Why are 2D games so much more popular than 3D at tournaments?
.

History.

The only reason our grassroots scene exists is because of the TO's who have a long history playing these games themselves.
Why are Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom more prominent than other 2D franchises like King of Fighters? Or even Mortal Kombat?
Ask the cannon bros what history they have with fighting games and it's street fighter. Street Fighter II was a huge thing that built the foundation of playing practicing and playing these games in a strategic manner.

You can also ask why are 3D fighters so much more prominent in East Asia. It's because their arcades outlasted the west. There was no effective dead period there, like there was in the US. So playing something like Tekken in arcade was a much more developed concept. It's why Tekken 6 was such a big thing in both Korea and Japan but was barely noticed over here.

If you want to reduce it to that, yeah, but it's a big composite of superior, distinct and appealing character design, international appeal, brand strength and simplicity in mechanics. When you see any mainstream depiction of a fighting game, it's a SF-esque set up.

I can pull exact opposites to your Tekken anecdotes too with some of my own. How friendly it is to watch means so little in the grand scheme of things if you think about how little people actually watch fighting games.
