Tales of the World : Reve Unitia coming to Nintendo 3DS

So as a relative newbie to the Tales series (I've only played Symphonia, Destiny, Eternia and Abyss), what is this game like from a gameplay point of view? Is it like Project X Zone, because that's always what I've imagined a Tales SRPG would be like.

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
They were not. I greatly enjoyed both of them.

Good for you, but most of the people who bought them don't agree, i only tried the Japanese demo of Innocence so i can't give a fair judgment but based on what i played i agree with them.

Is it really an SRPG or is it like the Nikami--whatever dungeon ones which while had turn based SRPG sort of maps (but free movement) but the battles were tales of battles (you controlled multiple squads).

*looks at screenshots* Oh thats a grid based tactics RPG for sure. I'll have to wait for gameplay videos (I dislike most agility based turn ones or use complicated methods to work out damage inflicted or taken which kind of leaves me with Fire Emblem).

The sources don't mention it but is this Japan only for now? Would really like another Tales game on 3DS.
They are very much crossover based which I feel makes them Japan only (I forget if all the mainline entries were localised or not).

There is a interesting point on Source 1's scan image.

It looks like new title has shown on that image, Geist Crusher God

I have more interest in that title than tales one.

It's hard to take your crusade against the games seriously when you say you haven't played them and you can't "give a fair judgement."

Wasn't TotA3DS the only JRPG on the system for like two years?

Looks like one and a half in Europe and one in the US before FE:A came out.
That helped it as well. The US had Devil Survivor Overclocked as well, which was released a month before Awakening here in Europe. I think after Abyss's release in 2011, we didn't get one RPG in 2012.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

There's kingdom heart 3D in 2012 i believe

An action rpg though

Wow, damning a game because it has mediocre graphics.

If what people have said is correct, the original game wasn't that good to begin with. I'd

No, they didn't tried hard at all. It's not like they were new games either, sure they were remakes but remakes of DS titles that didn't sell that much either.

Yep, just what I was thinking.

We don't know yet.

But you should play Tales of Vesperia if you have a Xbox or Xillia is you have a PS3. Xillia 2 is coming this summer (it's rummored a July release)

The ports were bad though. They didn't even bother upgrading the models. They just slapped the game on the Vita and increased the resolution to match and the screen and done. It probably didn't even take them a few months or a month at all to port it.

Thats just outright not true.

Tales of Hearts was a game with 2D sprites for the characters and 3D backgrounds

...they made 3D models for all characters in R.

...and I´d advise to look at some Innocence R / Vanilla gameplay, the models in R are quite bad, but they aren´t 1:1 DS models at all.

This is so stupid, why do all devs go out of their way to avoid Nintendo even when its clear there are money to be made there :(

No surprise, this isn't the first time Namco avoid a Nintendo platform after a game of the series made considerable success into it. Tales of Symphonia became, at the time, the best worldwide selling game thanks to the effort from NOA and NOE to advertise it on the west, yet, Namco never brought any Tales for the GCN after it.

My guess is because the fanbase are very alligned with Sony products (in Japan, at least), so they take that into consideration, despite the success it might make on different systems.

I was going to get all salty if this was RM4 on the 3DS since it'll probably never get localized and I could never import it.

But, I see it's just a smartphone port or whatever so I won't be losing any sleep if it never leaves Japan. ~_~

I don't get the hate for Tempest, granted while I have not played it, I have seen vids on YouTube and it looks pretty snazzy. Surprised that a full 3D Tales is on the system (Innocence is as well).

WHAT IS SO BAD ABOUT IT?! XD

Also, I'll say it, I'd love for Dimps to remake it on 3DS as Tales of the Tempest R, there, I said it! :p

While ALL isn't true obviously. :p A VERY large portion is true.

I mean so many smaller tier devs just avoid the 3DS like the plague, like Gust, Nippon Ichi, Compile Heart, Falcom, etc. No bones given, and if ever, they're never RPGs (only NIS and Idea Factory itself did one in-house game each, the latter actually got localized, how about that).

I cannot believe it took this long to get another Tales on 3DS.

Play it and you'll see. The graphics are about the only thing about it that are at least okay. It just one big design mess, from the story to the AI and even the menu.

Edit: I don't even think a remake can redeem it, just consider it a failure and move on.

Not as bad as Tales of the Tempest.

The mothership title that it's not longer a mothership titles because it was so awful Tales of developers degrade it? I think there is a fan translation since last year. Since 04/01/2013 (Month/Day/Year). I think it works, it's not a April Fool joke XD

I don't think I'll ever buy a cartridge until I see it for 5€ or less. There are too many good games I haven't bought yet, I'm not going to buy an almost universally pawned game while there is good stuff I need to buy only to be able to complain about it on GAF.

I don't care what system (3DS or Vita) but I'd really like another Tales of the World to be localized into English. Is that too much to ask? =)

I would expect his source to be banned on GAF - but nevermind i think Tales of the Abyss sold very well here in europe, they had to reprint it here in germany a bunch of times. Bamco also screwed up for not having a eShop release, but these companies just wont learn when it comes recognizing sleeper hits.
To be fair, retail titles weren't in the eShop when Tales of the Abyss launched. I'm baffled that it isn't on there now, but it wasn't at the time because the first retail game wouldn't launch for six more months.

The only titles of note that aren't on there are all from big Japanese companies who published before New Super Mario Bros. 2 broke out:

Tales of the Abyss
Metal Gear Solid 3D
DOA:D
Kingdom Hearts:DDD
Heroes of Ruin
FF:Theatrhytm.

Hey, Sega FINALLY put Super Monkey Ball 3D on the eShop just the other day, never say never. :p

Wow and we were speculating in older threads that they were done with 3DS/Vita for mobile.

Well it's not getting localized anyway.

Do we know the developer of Tactics Union? Can't find anything. Other mobile games seem to say who developed them (none that are like Matrix, Alfa System, or 7th Chord).

Edit: For example, Tales of Link (why oh why is this not a Zelda Tales game?!) is by Akatsuki inc.

Tales of Kizna is by KLabGames.

Tales of the Abyss got localized and the other 2 didn't, they weren't even given a chance.

They were given a chance in Japan and that's all Bamco cares about when it comes to the Tales series. The only reason we got Abyss in the west is probably because they already had it translated and the voices recorded.

"Most of the people"? You talked to "most of the people" who bought both games? That must have taken awhile.

Anyway, back in reality, as someone who played Innocence R on Vita in full (and not just the demo), I can honestly say it is a really awesome game. Tales of games usually disappoint me, but I loved Innocence R from start to finish. I haven't played Hearts R beyond the demo, so I cannot comment on that one.

In regard to the game this thread was created for, I'm always up for a new 3DS JRPG/SRPG, so I am hoping it will be good!

I looooove Tales! I also, always enjoy a good SRPG, so if they localize this (which seems unlikely, but PxZ might say otherwise) I'm going to snatch it up immediately!

This is flat-out untrue. Not only false about upgrading models, but you completely disregard added content to the games, gameplay enhancements, and even so much as two new playable characters in each game. And while people go on about not personally playing it and claiming others didn't enjoy it, I too know someone that calls the Vita games among their favourite Tales, and she's a major fan of the series.

Tales of the Abyss on the other hand was a straight-up copy-paste port. The only difference being load times which was only natural due to the mediums. Whether you call call them sufficient ports or not, or even better games are different matters entirely, but the Vita remakes were no doubt greater efforts than what 3DS got with Abyss.

at last, for christ's sake
I'd rather that second DS game got ported and localized..was it called Innocence? I remember hearing good things about that, and how it was much better than that arse Tempest one

What? They're clearly remakes. Ugly remakes, but remakes.

Hearts (the 3rd Tales DS game) is the one you want.

Famitsu's coverage seems to confirm that this is a port of the smartphone game: http://remoon.blog15.fc2.com/blog-entry-30108.html

Can you translate the bit?

Here's one I found elsewhere:

・発売日未定
・価格未定

・プロデューサー:山田茉弥

・スマホのタクティクスユニオンをパワーアップさせたとか何とか
 グラフィックはむしろパワーダウンしているように見える。

・バトルは最大8名
・秘奥義カットインは描き下ろし
・「テルン」「ナハト」が人型になり戦闘するのが新要素

・開発状況は60%。
