Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 15-21 | Mewwho?

If i had a company and needed someone who was as eloquent and well-versed in language and culture, i would hire Zhi on the spot.

Sure some of the things he says some people have a problem with, but from what i have seen zhi has a mastery of being able to come up with different topics on the spot.

everything from pop, classical, historic, and even scientific. i don't see someone who is going out of his way to offend. on the contrary, i see someone who is either well read or keeps up with current world events and tries to add a comedic flair to his commentating style.

you going to tell me that a singaporan videogame commentator who speaks 3 languages should even know about ferguson, us border issues, or french current events?

come on son, relax a little.

EDIT: although i do admit he has some next level thirst and needs to dial it down sometimes

i hate to say this ... but i agree.

:L

Viper, maybe.

But I've never felt Fuerte is a dumb character above the basic level of play. Once people know what to do, you are playing a guessing game where the opponent always has more options and can always do more damage.

Unless you play like this... which to me is amazing.

A character can be dumb AND bad. Fuerte played as a slot machine is both abominably dumb and no fun to play against but also bad because of payoffs.

Ladies and Gentlemen - we are witnessing something truly special here. Others will say they were up, past drunk, crosseyed and yelping at their monitor, watching this fucking nonsense; that they saw what Pepeday was doing to Bonchan on this night and were better for it. But they will be lying. And it will be understandable. Who wouldn't want to be seeing this crazy-ass bullshit as it happens?

But we, the few, and the proud, we actually are witnessing this ridiculous mess. And it is good.

Me. I don't want to see Fuerte. Fuerte is cancer.

I love it in principle, but the implementation of it in a lot of cases if egregiously bad. Ky's standard fireballs come to mind. Way too strict of an execution requirement just to open up that aspect of his game.

Well they had to give him one non brain dead FRC.

And fucking lol at people saying Nemo is the rising star of 2014

Thank YOU everyone who tuned in/shared the info and enjoyed the weekend's events at TGS. I am extremely exhausted and just settled into my hotel room (1:30 AM). It's been a long week. There's a lot of work that goes on here and it's not just the production you see. I was stuck in meetings/interviews and other things throughout the weekend. I am extremely proud of my team that helped make this happen. Sp00ky, Cameraman, Zhi and everyone else. GOOD SHIT.

Thanks Mark.
I am amazed by your stick collection. Over 400 sticks. I said WOW.

I wished they revealed more for Tekken 7 but oh well.....location tests are coming soon anyway.

no, it's really not. it's really, really not. at all.

I would be. I like Ninja Gaiden 3: Razers Edge.

So I've just finished watch and I see why everyone was hyped as shit over the last couple of pages. That El Fuerte and Rolento rang rings around Daigo.

I think we should have a new member join NeoGaf called

Ruh roh, that doesn't seem great.

Though I don't know much about this topic, I wish I had more to offer than just a blanket "Well this is bad, we need to fix it somehow" without any thoughts on how to do that.

That's literally all there is too it. Just stop doing it. If you didn't register or you are late and such. Too fucking bad. People need to stop getting away with shit because they are "known" or "friends" with the people running the shit.

Me. I don't want to see Fuerte. Fuerte is cancer.

I don't see it. I don't see El Fuerte's suddenly coming online and winning. Ultra finally allows the rest of the cast to shine....

.....except Dee Jay.

Speaking of MarkMan..... I got something to say to this mofo....

Thank you!

Once again you brought the most interesting, hypest, most fun booth to TGS and streamed it! Square Enix was dropping bombs left and right, yet yours was the most packed in the place. Seriously great job and hope you guys return next year!

Got to see great matches, awesome quality for new games, Guilty Gear Xrd I-No vs. Potempkin set, Mago getting bodied in DoA5. Great weekend provided by you and the crew. Seriously thank you!

Well yeah, but then if TO's, even say, big name TO's who run majors for years and years and years do it, then what, do they just start boycotting majors? It DOES need to be stopped of course, and it's just hoping that known players or friends of TO's will stop trying to get special treatment, and that those TO's will stop making exceptions too.

The problem is certain TOs are extraordinarily corrupt in my eyes. This is why I'm boycotting my local major. The only places I trust right now are CEO and UFGT, possibly Evo due to its size.

The LI Joe problem is the issue- they actually just don't see the issue. It's so dumb.

Was Shiek L-canceling???? I thought the landing lag was too much (according to GAF).

Cloud is the best.

People just sadly ignore it. Its pretty frustrating seeing that people give preferences to top players. I understand it'll attract a bigger crowd but for Noel? Really? He isn't even relevant anymore!

Those TOs just don't think that stuff is a problem.

In my experience there's a huge difference in the mentality of some TOs. Some have the "do you know what I've done for this community?" attitude, where they're doing us all a favor by running these events and we can hold that since they've been around for years. Then there's the others, who understand their job is to provide a service. We are a customer. Their tournaments are great and they've moved past these problems.

It's definitely tough. Once you grind it out though, you'll be doing those combos where you FRC stun edges four times with ease.
It does have a certain entry barrier since FRC stun edge is when you truly get to what Ky's all about.

I guess there are YRCs now (for better or worse). Unfortunately I hate Xrd Ky's fireball game.

These audio issues on art's stream is pretty unfortunate. Apparently someone messed with his set up :(

The matches should be good though.

Thanks for the clarifying the mindsets. This seems spot on on what goes through the minds of TO's when they are running a tournament. I would honestly prefer that the TO's who have the former mentality to hold that L when top level players, who don't appreciate bracket rigging, don't come to their tournament.

There is no L-canceling. There's auto landing cancel on -some- aerials.

Please explain.

Hiya FightingGAF, I'm trying to get into fighting games! I've never played them that extensively, but I want to get more into them. I've played Brawl a total of 10 times I think and I've been dicking around with the 3DS Smash demo. On Steam I have KOF XIII and Mortal Kombat.

Any tips for newbies?

Having all events be pre-reg only would help, but that's never going to happen since the FGC is so lazy/poverty. I get the idea behind at the door registration, it helps people that might not know if they can attend until the last minute, but it causes so many problems when people abuse it. Challonge or something like it should be mandatory too(luckily that seems to be happening). That way there's a clear record of how the brackets are set up.

From personal experience, find a game that you enjoy heavily. Also, look at the OP, Enzo has done a great job lining up great content for those who want to learn. After that, research what sites have a plethora of information on the characters and some combo videos and basically learn basic bread and butter combos. Practice makes perfect, watching tournaments is a must if you want to keep up with all the tech/combos being shown and always, ALWAYS play someone who is at the same skill level as you. Both of you will progressively improve and feed off of each other as training buddies and grow as players.

Last minute registration is completely fine, some people have to wait until the last minute to know if they can attend or not. However, if I read what was posted above correctly, Noel went past the designated time for late registration and still got admitted into the tournament.

Gotcha. It works all the time with certain aerials. To be completely honest, I feel like Sakurai made Smash 4 a more traditional fighting game, albeit, I only say this off of what I've seen in terms of gameplay for the 3DS.

Remember in brawl where aerials just auto canceled when you hit the ground? Same deal for Smash 4 except certain aerials still retain landing lag. In the demo, Mario's Fair has landing lag but his nair and uair do not.

God damn, I'm loving this already!

Welcome!

Try to play against other people, either online or (better yet) in person. And don't be too put off by any losses.

I often see it as, if you were a new upcoming tournament player who wanted to get into the scene and had this BS happen, it'd deter you from playing. If I went to tournament and had my match delayed or had to put up with strings being pulled for a TO and his friends, that would stop me from attending.
Not everyone who attends tournaments is in this inner circle of well known players who is always on stream.
I know this is one of those American Drama things but in the UK, that shit doesn't fly.

Damn some people jacked some of Art's audio equipment. Stay scumbag trashy FGC members

Stuff like that really pisses me off.

In all honesty, I wouldn't recommend KoFXIII even though that game is fantastic. It's not even close to being beginner friendly. Also, Smash is a non-traditional fighting game so a lot of stuff you may doesn't transfer to well though the terminology (footies, jabs, recovery, understanding frame data etc) still exist.
Street Fighter 4 is the easiest beginner game and yet also has some of the best highest level play. Once you get SF4 down, you can transfer that into a lot of other games including KoFXIII and Mortal Kombat. That's not to say you can't start with KoF or Mortal Kombat but SF4 is a game that pretty much everyone plays and has universal connections , even if they don't primarily play that game.

FGW weekly is good for fighting game streams. The more you watch of each game, the better you'll get as you can learn by watching and put that into practice yourself. Checkout Eventhubs for tier lists, frame data,, hitbox data, terminology .

Picking your weapon (controller choice) is also important. I can't play fighting games at all on pad (with the exception of Smash) and would happily prefer playing on an arcade stick, while others will win the biggest fighting game tournament on the planet with a PS1 controller.

Well his Ex leg throw is like a teleport in how safe it is

Elf is almost Bison like in terms of how fucking hard it is to attack him on wake up now. Go for a meaty normal, EX run gets him out. Go for a wake up throw, EX legs gets him out. And their is the EX Q bomb which has hit/throw/fireball invincibility and even on block only gets punished by minor stuff without Ultra or Super. Basically the risk/reward is worth it for Elf players to go for it earlier in matches.

Problem is, what can be done about it? I'll say this, your treatment did have a big role in me deciding to not hitting TFC this year- I know I'm a nobody washed up person, but that's still $50 they're not gonna get.

As for poverty status- what about allowing folks to prereg without paying, then pay at door- if they don't pay, just strike their name from the brackets. At least then if someone's a lucky dog it's random.

how about putting all late registrations in one bracket? they should have a harder time than people who pre-register. noel brown not paying and still being able to enter is b.s.

Agreed. His options are too good when he has meter now (while being absolute garbage when he has none).

Might like to see if there was a way to balance that out.

MK/Injustice and SF4 are likely the best beginner games. The NRS games have simpler commands and chains, both of which are more lenient than the SF series' stuff.

I could see Q-Bomb losing throw invincibility on wakeup, a la Rose's EX Spiral.

The issue with doing that is you can end up with some wildly unbalanced brackets that way. You could have one bracket where everyone shows up and another where 3/4ths of the bracket no-showed. I actually used to do provisional brackets for events I helped run, until I realized that between the drops and the late adds, you had to redo everything on site anyway.

how about putting all late registrations in one bracket? they should have a harder time than people who pre-register. noel brown not paying and still being able to enter is b.s.
The problem there is the late registrant pool always ends up screwed up, usually due to not too many people entering. It would also give some incentive for a top player to not pre-register, as they now know they'll only get to play with other players who registered late (this, of course, stops working if multiple top players do this).

Didn't Final Round do exactly this and ended up with some shit anyway? If TOs want to float people, they're going to do it regardless of the structure.
