The Legend of Legacy (3DS) announced [JRPG, SaGa & ex-S-E staff, MASASHI HAMAUZU]

I'm astonished at how many people are complaining about the name, when we had a worse name (i.e. Bravely Default) attached at a pretty good game just recently on 3DS :p

That's because this title is terrible in a generic way-it feels like it contains only filler words that should be appended to other things, without an actual core. meanwhile bravely default is at least unique enough in its bewildering weirdness to be memorable.

Doesn't seem to have harmed The Legend of Heroes.

Admittedly that didn't catch on in any way here until Trails in the Sky, which in a way is a more appropriate series name.

Although word of mouth does a lot and probably matters infinitely more than name for these games.

What I wouldn't do for a game that accurately portrays Kobayashi's art style in game.

Her designs are so beautiful, but they almost always get reduced to chibis. (Which is fine in moderation, but not all the time.)

Preach! Agreed on all counts.

Hamauzu has a legacy of composing great OSTs for bad games (Unlimited Saga anyone?)

Very true, but I can't recall him ever being on a game this low profile before. I think these days all the greats just freelance wherever they can get work though, and now that we know this really is a new SaGa game it makes sense.

So how does this look compared to SaGa in terms of the game? Because this just seems really Bravely Default-ish to me.

Well BD wasn't exactly the first game of that kind. But here are some random screens of old SaGa games:

7th Dragon is okay but that Criminal Girls horseshit is just embarrassing and all the other imageepoch games I've played (Arc Rise Fantasia, Luminous Arc, Sands of Destruction... was that them? I forget) ranged from mediocre to flat-out terrible.
They have made a lot of crap but every once in awhile they make a great game, so I always keep a watch on them. Unfortunately none of these great games has ever been localised outside of Japan. E.g.

7th Dragon 2020: great game.
7th Dragon 2020-2: ditto.
Sol Trigger: great game, easily the best thing they did from scratch on their own.
Toushin Toshi: great remake, great JRPG. One of the best on the 3DS.

As for FuRyu, I've not played any of their games as we PAL-landians weren't deigned worthy to play Unchained Blades, but very few people seem to have anything positive to say about them, and it seems that the director on this project is a FuRyu guy? I don't recognise the name, at least.

In regard to FuRyu I really liked Exstetra, it is low budget (and it shows) but the battle system is really good and I enjoyed the game from start to finish. It's better than a lot of JRPGs out there. I've only played a bit of Lost Dimension but so far I am enjoying it as well. The Unchained Blades games are so, so bad. Be glad you didn't get those. But it seems like they've been making better JRPGs since then, so I'm hopeful for this game, especially after seeing the staff working on it.

Romancing SaGa 3 is just one of those gigantic old games in terms of scale. I mean, goddamn. It still scares me to even think of trying to finish it on my own these days.

Anyone who hasn't tried it, should get on that pronto.

KAMSHEEN!

Not really a fan of SaGa, but these days I'll take any jRPG without fanservice shit that looks remotely interesting, so sign me up.

There is no one set route for the story—the player will be able to progress the game freely. Because the map is available from the start of the game, players will want to use it to aid their exploration. Each time you discover a new map, the number of areas you can adventure to increases. This sequence repeating, players will discover the secrets hidden on the island.

According to game designer Kyoji Koizumi, who also comes from the SaGa series, he wanted to make a game without quests, where players can find out what to do on their own. But they knew if there wasn’t any guidance, some players would feel stuck. So The Legend of Legacy provides one big objective, then leaves it up to the player to figure out how to do that, uncovering things along the way.

The Legend of Legacy is due out for 3DS in Japan on January 22, 2015.

Color me interested.

Although the chances of it coming to the west is slim. Unless some other publisher is willing to do it (also unlikely)

SE is out of the question though, it seems.

I read that the director Masataka Matsuura was at Level-5, but no other info on that (MobyGames say he was a Game Planner in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky). What games did he work on at Level-5 and elsewhere aside from PMD?

What?!?!? A Saga game with Hamauzu?! Please localize. Xseed PLZZZZ. Kato is involved too? God damn.
Yeah, they have a promising lineup going. I am particularly interested in Kato's involvement since I love Radical Dreamers and CC, but he hasn't really done anything noteworthy since besides work on FFXI I guess. Cool to see him still working on games though, been around since Ninja Gaiden.

Can someone please recommend me a SaGa game?

- Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song on PS2 is great, has a proper English release, and showcases all the greatness of the SaGa series as well as some of the flaws

- SaGa Frontier 2 is one of the prettiest RPGs on the PS1

- Romancing SaGa 3 on SFC is great too, but I'm not even sure if there's an English translation patch

Romanacing SaGa 3 has an english patch but the translation is not that hot, and the game isn't 100% translated like some item descriptions, but it's playable. It actually has a complete Spanish patch though. I remember seeing that the hacker on the Spanish version may be working with someone to come out with a better English release sometime.

Well, if you cross off S-E and XSEED, who else is there?

Atlus? Not impossible, I suppose.

Aksys? They probably have enough on their plate as it is.

NIS? Do they even care about 3DS?

Rising Star Games? They seem reliant on hand-me-downs from NA publishers at this point.

Natsume? A lot of their localisations come out of left field, but most of their established partners go way back, so...

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Beyond the Beyond and Bravely Default are any better? :p

Bravely Default falls on the opposite end of the spectrum of bad names, they really overthought it. This has to be one of the most generic and yet equally stupid names I've seen for an RPG. If it's localized the name should definitely be changed.

So it's essential a SaGa game without the title of SaGa. This must be the game that the team was working on for SaGa's 25th anniversary.
I guess this is the equivalent of Bravely Default to Final Fantasy. SaGa games sell well in Japan, but not in the West, so I'm concerned on whether this will get localized. It didn't help that Unlimited SaGa was panned by critics and players in the West.

This must be Kawazu's promised #SaGa25 announcement, I knew he'd deliver...

..........

You guys know this isn't a S-E game right? All the S-E people who are working on this game left the company years ago. :p
