I just finished the Essex County collection. It had all volumes together. This was a very good read that had a lot of slice of life. It was very grounded, and had several powerful story beats. Lemieres ability to weave the characters, timelines, etc was really well done

Ah yeah, I still really need to get this. They had one of the small TPBs from this including just one of the stories from Essex County and I absolutely loved it. It was so poignant. Lemire really nailed it with both the writing and art.

Finished Book 2 of Preacher so I read up to issue 26.

Very solid, I can't believe this series is able to stay so damn consistent with quality.

Nice!
And Book 2 is probably my least favorite book (I still love it, I just love it the least of all the volumes). That's how consistently great Preacher is. Well, excluding the specials. The specials are pretty inconsistent as far as quality goes.
Speaking of the specials, now that you're getting to Book 3, be sure to take a quick look at this reading order. For some reason, they didn't put the specials in the right order in the TPBs. In fact, in Book 4, there are three specials; the first special is at the beginning of the TPB and shouldn't be read until after the issues in the TPB and the second and third specials are at the end of the TPB (after the normal issues) and should be read before the issues included in the TPB. It's all a little bizarre. Luckily the reading order for the specials isn't really that critical at all. When you read them, make sure you're either reading them with the reading order or any time after where they fall in the reading order. For example, for the Cassidy: Blood and Whiskey special, it falls between 34 and 35 in the reading order. Ideally you'd read it after 34, but really any time after reading 34 is just fine since it's not critical to the story, but it does assume you know the information that was given to you in issues 1-34, so you shouldn't read it until after you've read 34.

That ended up being WAY longer than I meant it to be. It really isn't that big of a deal at all since all the specials are flashbacks and none of the specials are of much importance. But yeah, just a little something to keep in mind to help your enjoyment just a tiny bit.

I thought you guys would be hyped for that new Hellboy mini series starting this week.

Is this week that Maleev Hellboy mini? Or is it a different one?

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Yep. It's the Maleev one :D

Ooh, awesome. I'm so looking forward to reading that when it's collected in an amazing Dark Horse hardcover.

What gketter said. I was only a few arcs in, but they were so good I took the plunge and found a tpb lot on eBay.

This is a good write-up about the series.

(Safe to read till the point the blogger starts describing the various arcs. Spoilers after that).

Cool, thanks!
Edit: That definitely looks like something I want to read. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I'd love it if you posted your impressions when you read it too!

Oh yeah, Messi, I didn't forget that I told you I was going to take pictures of the Strangers in Paradise omnibus. I'm just waiting for the sun to come up so that I can take some decent photos.

Much like Watchmen, obv, it's playing off the idea that to good, one must do bad. In this case, Harley thought that crashing everyone's hope and morale down with the assassination of a beloved president, then the resurgence when he was reborn, would help fix whatever problems everything was having by giving people hope. I don't know if he knew about the VP tho

Its like, think about how much public support Lyndon B. Johnson got after JFK assassination. I think Harley believes if a beloved president can die and THEN be resurrected by a superhero, he'd have the backing and support to usher in that golden age of superheroes he accidentally destroyed when he killed his father, the original Yellowjacket. But Captain Atom got displaced by the black hole, and the Gentry(though the vice president and his flunkies like Sgt. Steel) have worked to prevent that from happening and bring an end to the heroes of that world just like they did in the other worlds so far. I imagine the last issue of Multiversity will work towards solving this.

Oh, I forgot about the superhero thing too. There's many layers and I have been awake for millions of hours. Damn, I want to read Pax again.

would it still have been made public that Peacekeeper was the one who murdered the president to begin with? To usher the age of the superhero back, i'd assume this would have to have been kept secret.

Just read the first two issues of the Salvation arc of Preacher. Yep, this is definitely my favorite arc, just as I remembered (not to say it's the best arc though. It's equally amazing as every other arc, but the setting and tone of this arc just really gets me good). Pure joy to read.

OMG the beard issue of Dom patrol

Yessssssssss. Outrageous and hilarious. Pure comedic genius.

Also, Messi, here are the Strangers in Paradise omnibus pics I promised!

And here's a picture of it on my shelf just to show how massive the thing is. Still can't believe I got 2200 pages of great comics for $55.
Yes, I know, my non-big-two comics are organized very badly.

I didn't get any pictures of the interior pages, but they're fairly thin but still pretty good quality matte pages. Pretty much what you'd expect the paper to be in 1100 page black and white comic books.

Ordered Strangers in Paradise from Amazon. I've wanted to read it, but it was a bit too pricey at IST for me to justify.

damn I still want to get that...I already have the singles and the thick mini tpbs ...they were cheapo though and are fading and I only paid 20 dollars for the set...so its not totally a waste right? ..argh

Someone sell me on this Strangers in Paradise thing. I like Harley!

I dunno its awesome. people(girls) used to borrow mine back when they were coming out every month. Girls always use you for cool comics, like SiP, Sandman, Swamp Thing and Harley books. I'm a wierdo though, I have mini busts, calenders, keychains and t shirts of them. If I had to make a top 3 favorite comics, I wouldn't be able to but it would be in it.

edit: ah shit those pics...I'm done

Hot damn! that looks nice.

Note to self: Look into Strangers in Paradise omnibus after holiday vacation.

November Pick Up, didn't get my DCBS order today which has Saga HC and Teen Titans Earth One. Also waiting on the second Jim Shooter/Francis Manapul Legion of SuperHeroes HC from IST...
Dammit...

Damn @ that Preacher. My uncle borrowed all of my trades but the first years ago and never returned them. This might be my best chance at re-buying them.

I always get jealous when they roll out these nicer reissues of trades I already have. Like those preacher trades. Even the SiP is such great value for the collection. I had to get the 19! Trades to read it all in trade form. So many skinny trades.

What is Gene Ha working on currently?

Edit: And Top 10 covers mention both Gene Ha and Zander Cannon on art. How do multiple artists split up the work?

On Top 10, Cannon did the page layouts and breakdowns, sketching where the characters would be, panel size and placement, etc. Ha then did the pencils and inks. IIRC.

Hah. That's so nuts. I can't stand long-running series collected in tiny trades. That's pretty much the only reason I haven't read Transmetropolitan yet, in fact. I really hope they release some nice thick TPBs like they have for all the other Vertigo books after the Absolute editions get released.

yea i'm plagued with tiny Transmet, secret six and Preacher trades too. The only benefit is you can split them up between shelves if you need too. But some are so tiny you can barely read whats on the spine

Cannon also drew the spinoff

That is very interesting, thanks. They work very well together. The book is gorgeous, with so many details in each panel. The Absolute format is definitely worth it.

Are there any other series of note where multiple artists have worked on a single issue? I would have thought that was rather uncommon.

Well, there are those Absolutes Transmet volumes coming out next year.

This is exactly why I gave away so many of my TPBs last week. I got rid of all seven Morning Glories trades, Uncanny Avengers, Thor, Young Avengers, Lazarus, The Wake, etc. I'm basically upgrading to hardcover or omnibus treatment for all of those.

Not to split hairs but isn't every series that has a separate penciller and inker basically that?

As for something closer to what you're looking for, Giffen did do layouts on 52 and Miller and Janson shared art duties towards the end of their run of Daredevil.
