The PSP Appreciation and Collecting Thread

it definitely is. PSP is the best market for collecting right now, honestly. Tons of cheap fantastic games. Even the rare games are below 100$ for the most part. Not to mention it's a fantastic console in that it's super easy to rip your games and play on PPSSPP (one of the best emulators out there) or on hardware with CFW. Honestly just great. Debating picking up a 3k to join my old 2k and GO just because I want to see the screen lol.
I have a 2000 and a Go too. I've also wanted a 3000 for ages but want to pick one up new or in mint condition for a decent price. Let me know if you know of any stores still selling them new.

I have a 3000 and love it. I always wanted a GO, but Im afraid my hands will cramp due to it being smaller. If I see one really cheap I'll probably get it.

Any good places to get PSP backup batteries? After one for my 2000. Ideally after a first party one, unless someone can really voucher a third party one.

Thanks.

I'm still on a 1K and the ghosting is so bad, lol.
Yeah, the 2k is way better but it's not good by any metric.

Will do. If decent price is equivalent to about 80$, I think you should browse around eBay, though. I'm being cheap about it and gunning for one for 40$.

The GO is okay. I got one of the last refurbished models Gamestop was selling online (lol). The unit I've got is finicky with transferring data and regularly fucks up, and the memory isn't cheap (had internal storage to compensate a bit but still). The screen is pretty nice, and the buttons themselves are great, but I find the slidepad a bit awkward and it feels topheavy (much like the DS, which I'm really not a fan of).

Otherwise it's good. Some people would complain about the lack of permanent CFW, but I don't know if that's your thing, and the CFW options these days are fantastic even in the non-permanent sector.

I would expect 3rd party ones to be acceptable, honestly. I haven't had much issue with 3rd party batteries from anyone. That said, if you want a new one you might be SoL, I haven't seen them.

Were 2K/3K batteries ever sold separately? I only remember seeing the Extended Battery Life Kits back in the day and those were shaped to be flush for the 1000s with a modified cover for the slims.

i got a 3000 a few months ago. only had a few very tiny surface scratches which are invisible, otherwise clean unit. was pretty cheap too. my old 2000 still looks perfect and my go is perfect as well, bought both brand new. only got a go to try that dual shock 3 on tv thing. works perfectly. i think the go is a little too small for extended play sessions. the d-pad and buttons are very good though.

$80 would be fine if it's in great condition. I'll have a browse on eBay sometime.

I think I still have the extended one from my PSP 1000 back in the day, though I no longer have the 1000. It's a shame there isn't one for the slim that is flush with the system.

yeah, collecting psp games is still cheap. The only downside is that there are a lot of "best of psp" or "essentials" or "greatest hits" types of collections everywhere.

And it really sucks that GoW chains of olympus and Gran Turismo can be found mostly with that label.

Just bought some ps one classics that i want to play but ive lost my charger and my 1000 won't/can't charge via usb :/

Anyone had experience of using a non official charger they'd recommend or should I just track down a second hand official charger?

It works as good as an official charger, I think.

£40 for the lot, got a few dupes which I'm going to sell so it's really a bunch of free PSP games. Wanted the two Mega Man's and Ghosts n' Goblins for a while!

Quite a few goodies in there. Nice find

I already own The 3rd Birthday, Crisis Core, Dissidia, Super Monkey Ball Adventure, Darkstalkers Chronicle, GTA Chinatown Wars and Gran Turismo. What would you recommend I try? I've been playing Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins which is tremendous, going to move onto both Mega Mans next. Is Tales of Eternia worth playing? I also hear this Ys is better played on PS2 so I might sell it for that

Great find!

God of War is good, Resistance isn't too bad, Ace Combat is decent if you're a fan of the series, Burnout, Wipeout, and Syphon Filter are great. I need to spend some more time with Pursuit Force but I remember it being described as an under-appreciated game.

Honestly there are a lot of games in there you could try. I quite like Tomb Raider anniversary. It's a bit more modernized version of the original tomb raider. I've heard good things about Lumines as well. Really, just try out anything that looks appealing. I'm perpetually impressed by how many good games are on the PSP.

Pick it up on Steam if that's an option. System requirements are extremely low, if you have a relatively modern PC you could probably play it.

Otherwise, PS2 is the way to go. Konami made some odd/undesirable changes and additions to their console ports, but you can fix some of the ones on PS2 with cheats. PSP version is just a bad port, looks and runs terribly and has long, frequent loading times.

Worse than other platforms but a lot better than the UMD. It is also a really old PSP game from before Sony upped the clock speed, so running it at 333mhz helps it run better.

Regardless, its the worst version of the game by a good margin. The PC version is the best (original version, and XSEEDs release has an additional mode, edit: and save point warps which are a big time saver), with PS2 being the alternative for folks who really, really don't want to play on PC. PSP version is basically the last resort version.

alright, fair enough. RPGs aren't really on the menu for me right now anyway. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Best version of Ghost n Goblins on the PSP, such a fun game. Also, you got the best Burnout on the PSP much better than Dominator.

Ghost n Goblins is sublime on the Vita I downloaded it and it looks amazing. Definitely my favourite version of that game

anyone in the UK know where I can buy PSP memory cards for decent price? Amazon and ebay are likely littered with knock offs :/

Ideally I'd like to buy a Micro SD to Pro Duo adapter, but again, knock offs/fail rate galore.

Guys I've goner PSP GO crazy, it's my fave handheld now lol.

Started playing TiT:FC on my Vita, figured I might see how it looks on PSP in native res so I bought a GO on Ebay for $70. Before the GO had turned up I remembered I had a 2000 so I dug it out and gave TITs a try and was like, blah. Washed out colors, low contrast screen, couldn't hack it so went back to the Vita, but then my GO turned up in the post so I gave it a try and wow what a great old screen! Punchy colors, higher dpi than I'm used to on OG PSPs and the analogue stick placement doesn't make my hand ache for some reason. Love the form factor, fits easy in my pocket and has an awesome RPG library.

I've since replaced the screen and bought a second GO, it's replaced the DS Lite and OLED Vita and now it's my fave handheld! Wouldn't mind a white one next.

Mind if I ask what TiT:FC is?

That'd be Trails In The Sky: First Chapter.

I also bought a 2nd PSP GO for a backup but when I tried to replace the screen I fucked the ribbon connector on one of the bumper buttons. Now it's just for parts. :(

I'd love to get a NOS unit one day, I don't mind paying a bit more for it.

My nephew gave me his PSP2000 after christmas, so I've been playing my physical PSP games again.

Bought a copy of Jeanne d'Arc. I've got like 3 of these tactics RPGs for the PSP and never really played any of them for an extensive time, but I really wanted this game.

Also, it's another contender in the list of best reversible cover art:

Jeanne is a great game. I loved every minute of it.

Enjoy! Jeanne d'Arc is one of my fave SRPGs and fave PSP games of all time.

The way I found out about the game is strange. There is a character in the game named Gilles de Rais, which is also the name of a japanese band I was looking into.

He was executed after confessing to murdering children for sexual gratification. Nearly 40 of them.

While he did fight in battles with Joan of Arc, you'd think they'd maybeeeeee tiptoe around this guy a bit, no?

random question: Does anyone know the size of the icons for PSP games on the XMB? 80x144 is the max size, and that's too large.
**
Huh. I seem to have fixed it. Photoshop is being very strange.

I'm considering this battery for my PSP 2000, as my current one drains pretty fast even without use:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00RSZSXIG/

Also found this one which is 2400 mAh:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001M4H5Z6/

Has anyone used these / can provide any guidance? Or if you know where I can buy OEM Sony ones from, please do let me know.

Thanks.
I recently picked up a 3600 tomee battery, and the back that came with it (as the battery is too large for the normal cover) is terrible. Outside of that I can't offer much.

I think mine is a 2000, guess that means I cant do it :(

if you really want to play PSP games on a big screen, you can try emulation. PPSSPP is pretty fantastic. Otherwise, yeah, you're stuck using the PSP itself as a controller unless you've got a Go.

Or
buy a Vita TV and rebuy the game from PSN

As soon as I finish an RPG that i'm playing on the 3ds, I will return to the party that is Digimon Re:Digitize. Such a cool game, but so far I'm like 3 hours in.

Has anybody played it?

And after that:
final fantasy 3
