DOOM Review Thread - The Fury Road of Shooters

Typical the really good games score lower in favor of the more popular games. DOOM fell off the map a while ago, and didn't leave on good footing. So there is still bad taste in the air. Even if they would have scrapped MP, people would have subtracted points for that simply because DOOM's popularity included both. It's really bad.

If this game was HL3, it would be in the 90s because HL2/HL1 was such great games. Just the way bias swings in this industry.

If HL3 released tomorrow with the same type of gameplay that HL2 had with some modernish upgrades like DOOM has, it still gets 7s and 8s IMO. That type of game doesn't sit well with the current age of gamers.

"Agree with my opinion or be damned!" yep sure is faith restoring. We havent gotten anywhere since the Twilight Princess days.

The reviewer himself came on here, to tell us if we didn't understand the score, we just didn't understand the "process".

That pic of 'Polygon' talking about the control scheme is hilarious after watching their footage. Of course, knowing the source of the quote only makes it that much better. I love GAF sometimes.

Wait, this is an old example, but one that sprang to mind was I don't remember Dead Space 2 getting dinged for its tacked-on multiplayer.

Has an 8.0 meta right now, but as usual you have one or two reviews dragging it down. Its why i dont put too much merit in average scores, but rather follow a few reviewers in specific. Meta is a decent base score, but thats about as far as i would go.

Opinions are like bum holes everyone has one :D. We all like and hate different things :).

I thought it was a great game, do wish the single player campaign was a bit more fleshed out (in terms of length) granted going back to the beginning and upping the difficulty level will have to do.

My "gripes" are minor, weak sound effects with some of the weapons.

Easily my GOTY thus far in 2016.

Come on what? 7.1? It's insulting, especially when IGN gave COD ghosts an 8.8.
I am in the second "chapter" of the game but so far a 7 feels about spot on in my opinion. i also miss the cartoonish monster design of the old games. I felt this way about 3 too however. Now all the enemies seem to lack color and individual style and blend together. It is hard for me to tell what enemy is which while running around an "arena" the game has boxed me in while it spawns a certain amount of enemies. Hell Knights look like the bigger possessed, for example, at first glance.

I am not a fan of how the first half of the game has looked either. But I guess that's how you hit 60fps. The second chapter thankfully has better art direction so far.

I am having fun, but as a huge Doom 1 and 2 fan, it doesn't remotely compare to the old games for me.

You haven't even reached the Foundry yet...

That seems like the worst possible reading of that post but...whatevs.

You guys disagree with a review....okay? Does that lessen your fun?
No.

So move on. People have differing opinions, it's a fact of life.

Except that reviewer doesn't agree with that. Doom has features that are " specifically and measurably bad". There's no room for opinion.

I'd say that the multiplayer is specifically and measurably average. I played two matches in the beta and one match in the final product and will likely never touch it again.

However, I haven't really dug into a multiplayer shooter since Modern Warfare 2. I'm sure later games have improved and what I consider average someone would consider bad.

You might not agree with the metrics the reviewer used to come to their opinion, and you may rankle at the direct language used, but it's still an opinion even if it is a harshly worded one.

And let's be honest here, DOOM is an amazing package but even with that understood, I would talk someone off the fence if they were getting this primarily/only for the multiplayer.

It's okay to disagree with reviews. It doesn't impact your enjoyment of the game, and everyone is entitled to their own views, and are allowed to express them as tersely as they want (especially if they're already put out a long review to back up their specific arguments).

It's all cool.

I still find the 7.1 hilarious. I would be more okay with the score if it was just 7, I'd be like okay cool. Wtf is the .1 for lololol I can see why reviewers of those sites can be so up their own ass when they rate with shuch tiny increments lol.

Eh, that doesn't change the fact that we really shouldn't give a pooh about it. Besides, a 7.1 is still a "good" overall score anyway. I wish we would stop getting so worked up about a review we disagree with.

Seriously though the MP ain't all that bad.

My opinion is that Doom's multiplayer is fucking shitty. There I said it. It's nothing like classic Doom deathmatches. It should have had all the weapons available, and no loadouts. It shouldn't have locked weapons behind multiplayer. It should have had bot matches. The maps are goddamn bad. My standard is UT2K4 on that kind of multiplayer, and nothing here touches any of that. And it's so slow. Campaign is blazing fast, but the multiplayer feels like a turtle race.

But there's nothing specifically and measurably bad about it. It's my opinion only. I have IRL friends that love the multiplayer. It's one thing to disagree with a review because you don't like the score or whatever. It's another to disagree when the reviewer himself comes to GAF to snidely comment on people's opinions, on a FPS game.
