iOS Gaming August 2016 | A sever-ly hot summer

Guys, be aware that there is much more to Reigns than rule as long as you can.

The real objective of the game, which will become apparent only after you rule over year 2000, is obtaining a good ending and solve the grand puzzles.

I won't spoil anything, but it's truly amazing (I solved some minor ones but I have yet to solve the main one).

You just sold me on the game and I'm still going through Severed.

Holy shit, I just counted how many games I got on my iPad Pro and there's precisely 200 games on there. I might delete some of those I'll never play.

How far in the future does the game progress?!

Well...I don't want to spoil the fun for you...
But let's just say I had a reign well over our current real life year.
Now I reset the reign (for reasons too spoilerific to tell).

I love there is much more than it seems in the game, almost Simogo like.
Just go on and on and on...you will find a ton of surprises.

Argh, I just now realize I already own Sentinels of the Multiverse on Steam. I should have tried it out on there before buying on iOS but it doesn't actually matter, as I prefer playing such games on the iPad anyway.

Deus Ex GO in four days! Really excited to see how they evolved the formula again.

Yeah. I'm excited about this one too. Currently going through Lara Croft GO and am enjoying it a lot.

Okay I don't think I can ignore Reigns anymore, and is gonna buy that one now. Will probably also buy Road Not Taken soon.

Anyway, I'll start up Space Marshals soon, so I'll be ready for the sequel.

Is leap of fate still releasing this week?
Should be

Yeah, Reigns is good. Reviewed it over on IndieGames

Reigns seems simple on the surface, but this game of kingly decrees wrings a surprising amount of weight and diverse scenarios from its easy-to-play mechanics.

I have now played Reigns for a little, and been four different kings. And I'm loving it. It's so cool, how you discover new things even if you die, but continue on as a new king. And you get to see how past choices can influence your current reign. And that you unlock new cards by completing objectives just opens up the possibilities even more so. So far I'm glad I bought it, but I'll give it more time tomorrow.

I'm also contemplating getting either Severed or Road Not Taken. I think I might go with Road Not Taken, as Severed seem to be a dungeon crawler in the sense that you move from room to room with a point of click navigational mechanic mixed with Fruit Ninja combat (this part I'm fine with).

Does this work offiline?

I need something for the plane ride back from Europe to NZ. I think my go to Dungeon Raid isn't going to cut it for the return journey.

Completely offline. Not an online, no card packs, no in-app purchases. It's not that kind of card game

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!

I think I finally understood how to trick the devil in Reigns!!!!!

This is utterly brilliant!!!!
Something that I thought only Simogo could do in a puzzle game (this is meant as compliment)!!!!!

Now...to actually do it....

My lips are sealed.

But do know that while trying to get the good ending I :

(Not really spoilers but...)

Discovered Internet
Found Excalibur
Found the cure for Back Plague
Discovered a new world
Etc...etc...etc....

Awesome.

I didn't go to space exploration yet...but I wouldn't be surprised if I could (I made up this, I do not know if you can).

Spoilers!

Well...sorry, I masked them now but do know they aren't spoilers or needed to trick the devil...just things that can happen to you playing (among hundreds other).
Maybe something is needed.
Maybe not.

:p

Speaking of that...I fear a lot of people will miss this awesome aspect of the game, playing just to 'reign'.
In reality there is much more to the game, with 3 different endings and puzzles to solve, while still managing to survive and reign.
In this regard, it reminds me a lot another favorite game of mine, Out There Omega while trying to reach the Gold ending.

I feel the devs could have been a bit more clear about this (I wasn't aware AT ALL about this before buying the game, but I LOVED discovering this by my own, so maybe they were right).

Might be hundreds more in the future. Devs told me they have plans to do a full set of queen cards in the future

Would be awesome, but I feel a ton of people will play tens of 'reigns' without realizing there is so much more.

It's incredible how much you can do with just binary choices.
The persistence of several decisions (some will hit yiur descendants a ton of years in the future) and all the interconnections are simply brilliant and make an experience so deep I really didn't thought possible.

Woah, that's another great game for September. I might wait on picking it up though, as I have yet to complete Sorcery 1 even.

With 4 coming out next month, and the series finally being finished then, I think instead of a Sorcery 4 OT, I'll make a Sorcery Saga OT encompassing the entire series. Especially because it sounds like quite a few people even in this thread were waiting for the fourth game before starting the games

You're lucky. You'll be able to enjoy the entire saga in one go, rather than having it spread across three years
I actually like when it is spaced out opposed to having it all in one go. I can just space it out myself now though so that's a plus.

Good idea with doing a Sorcery Saga OT!

So I discovered this unknown (to me at least) little gem yesterday.
So far I'm enjoying it a lot, and I basically didn't sleep yesterday night just to play it.

It's a scifi resource/disaster management with a very cool story so far.
The setting and the modules in the ship are pretty complex, with tons of things to check and prioritize.
You are the captain of the ship, set on course for a recon/save mission of a lost colony ship.....something went wrong along the way and the ship AI turned off your cryogenic chamber (just yours, the other 3 crew members are still sleeping, assuming you manage to keep them alive).
It's a pretty relaxing and slow experience till day 10, when things start to get frantic.
The game doesn't hold your hand....seems simple at first but you have to discover many things on your own (I kept dying on day 5 before realizing I needed to
improve power cells storage
to advance.

So far I'm enjoying it and I can't wait to go on with the story (I'm on day 17 right now).

Works pretty well on both iPhone and iPad, very light on memory too (it's not a demanding game).
Oh...it took me a bit to realize...the game is in realtime...so if power is going down...act FAST.
Every system, for repair, to upgrading to maintenance to shutdown to restart takes TIME.
So there are occasions when you are waiting a real life minute for the core reactor to restart, meanwhile praying oxygen won't leak too fast from that damn hull damage you can't repair without extra power....
I still have to understand what some icons mean, but I'm enjoying the game a lot nonetheless.

Back in the command center, I have an oxygen leak to fix.

Gave this a shot. There is definitely a good game in there somewhere, but it needs quite a bit of work. You paint a picture of a hectic atmosphere where you struggle to keep up w/ failing systems ala FTL but I found it incredibly easy and never really felt any pressure. I would actually call it pretty mind-numbing as the biggest challenge is not getting bored during 5+ minute realtime countdowns. By the end of the game it was reduced to just seeing how many systems I could upgrade for the hell of it before reaching the last day. I think I finished the actual objectives somewhere before day 30/44. My biggest complaint though is the story goes absolutely nowhere. There is a lot of mystery but in the end you don't learn anything -- you hit day 44 and just get a congratulations screen. I know this sounds really negative, but I did enjoy the game. It just screams early access while there is no indication given that any major development is planned. It's only $1 though so it's hard to go wrong. I hope the author builds on what I believe to be a solid foundation.

After having completed the game, I agree.
I enjoyed the first half more than the last, where everything is pretty automatic and you go on just to read the story....that ends nowhere.
I did enjoy it a lot for the first part tough.

Actually I wrote the dev the very same 'review' and I was told next updates will be mainly balancing and above all adding story (possibly making the journey longer than 44 days).
As far as I understood, dev is just one person.

I think the saga OT is a fantastic idea.

Good idea with a Sorcery! OT. I've been waiting till 4 drops before I grab them all / get started.

You might want to provide some insight in the OT, before people starting reaching the end and getting annoyed with restarting

I just missed out on the good ending of Reigns because
the skeleton didn't show up during the 100 years of the final death curse
. Ridiculous. I'd done everything required up until that point. I see the game getting a lot of praise but honestly I feel like the depth is lacking. There seems to be a lot of talk about how decisions have an impact way down the line, but the only evidence of that is this puzzle thread that runs through the game, and then as I get to the very end of it they deny me the conclusion. Very disappointing.

Tend to enjoy puzzle and strategy games or things with narrative choice like Sorcery! Trying to mostly find a few things that'll last me while I'm away!
- King of Dragon Pass is solid if you haven't played that before.
- 80 Days if you haven't gotten around to it yet
- Icebreaker (by Nitrome) is one of my favorite puzzlers. Simple mechanics, very varied and clever applications of those mechanics.
- RYB is a good logic-focused puzzler if you like Hexcells
- The Hexcells series is on iPad as well
- Ryan North's To Be Or Not To Be is a funny work of interactive fiction. Highly recommended
- Dream Quest is an excellent roguelike/card game hybrid. A strong recommendation if you can look past the art and appreciate the gameplay, although the art does grow on you. The creator of Magic The Gathering is a big fan

Ports-wise: Door Kickers, Human Resource Machine, This War of Mine, FTL, Snakebird, and Road Not Taken are all excellent

Also if you liked the GO games, Deus Ex GO is coming out this week

Are there any good Sudoku games out there? Something that will give various degrees of challenges but also control very well?

More_Badass didn't you work for Pocket Gamer once? Did you move over to Indie Games?

Is Sorcery 4 the game Shaun was hinting at? Disappointing if that's the case. :(

I was thinking the same. While the Sorcery series is good, this is a port we expected. Was hoping for a real surprise.

Edit: I don't think it is because what he was hinting at I thought was something this week. Sorcery 4 isn't coming until September.

Was really enjoying Reigns. Wasn't that far in. Think I had like 15 or so royal deeds done. Went to the dungeon a couple times but never figured it out. Really liking how deceptively simple it is. Unfortunately I went to the home screen last night in the middle of a run. Opened the app this morning and I was talking to the spirit again and I had zero completed royal deeds. High scores gone as well. Portraits and other stuff are still unlocked though. So weird. Probably just gonna delete and restart fresh in case something is messed up with my save now.
