You most certainly are ignorant about black people. You saying all black people say "nigga" based on fucking rapers and actors saying it.
Our ways? Once again, rapper and actors don't represent black people. That is exactly the same as seeing black people commit a crime and thinking all black people commit crime.
I am not surprised about the double down and turning tail and running when people question your fucked up opinion.
Do something more than watch movies or listen rap and maybe you'll stop thinking we are one big monolith.

You can let non-black people of color know. They shouldn't be saying it either.

I am not turning tail and running because i am being asked a question, i have answered every question that i have been asked so far have i not?, are you not able to read my replies?, and rappers and actors DO represent black people to the majority of the worldwide population weather you like it or not. And if some of them use the "N" word and popularize it you cannot blame the people who then start using it. And not even to refer black people, just among friends of the same color. Akin to saying "Dude" because that is what it comes across like. Just another way of saying "Dude" or "Vato".

And what is with your attitude?, name calling and being offensive?, you can't handle another persons opinion?. I am being civil and you are being anything but civil.

Rappers and actors only represent all black people to someone who is racist.
I didn't call you any names.

Riiiight... because we have sooo many black people around us right?, we know them because we have black friends and relatives and such... also, stop calling me a racist just because i am posting my two cents.

Can you at least accept that you are being offensive?

Just think if latinos all of a sudden started calling each other "beaners", another word with a negative connotation, and they started using it not only among themselves but also in songs and movies as a way to call each other. Would you be upset if non-latino people started using said word?, i mean the "N" word is never used with a negative connotation when used in songs and movies, it's never used as a way to offend.

Fuck off with this. This is insanely ignorant. How many black people have you met in your life?
None?, but that is not the point. The point is that when its used in movies and songs its used in a way that it comes across as another way of saying "dude", it never comes across as a negative word or an insult.

Stop saying racist things? You realize black people do things other than rapping and acting, correct? Your two cents are racist as hell.
I am not Latino so it is not for me to decide for Latinos how much disrespect they will allow. If Latinos did decide to start calling themselves that, I know I would be smart enough not to use it as well.
I also would not think all Latino used it because I heard it in songs and movies because I am not a racist.
If your only exposure to black people is through songs and movies, then yes you are ignorant about black people. Which explains why think all of us are the same.

If you're not black you have no business saying it. It's really as simple as that. But some people just can't stand being denied anything.
If only most of these people knew how it felt to be denied basic human rights for fucking ever but we say they can't say one word and they go apeshit

Do you like being told what things you can't do? Maybe you should employ a different technique if you care about reaching people.

how long should this rule be put in place? 100 years? 1000 years?
Empathy should be in place for as long as we exist; it keeps people from saying racial epithets and solves many other societal problems.

Am I allowed to write it in the script for an episode of The Wire? What about Pulp Fiction?

Can I say it if I am Louie CK?

I get this, but you also realize the people saying it are black, and in other movies when white people use it; it's in a negative context since we're using forms of entertainment to guide our decorum.

So pretty much, "I am not going to let some nigger tell me what I can or can't say."

Why am I not surprised you say it.

Because I'm not from the US and since I was a child I was listening to uncensored songs with that word in it. Growing up I never knew the hateful connotation it has.

Don't say nigga is the only technique I need

Saying don't be racist is making more people be racist

huh
You know it's more complicated than that. For one, someone using the word doesn't think it's racist. So first you help them understand why it is. Once you do this, they're not going to say it anymore. Giving edicts like "don't say this particular word ever" is fucking stupid and counterproductive.

While you might be for real, I gotta say that as an American this is like reading something from an alternate universe.

Do you like being told what things you can't do?

I like people to educate me on what makes them uncomfortable to say and do and what is offensive to them as a person so I can be a decent human being towards them; so yes, in that sense I don't mind being told what not to do.

That's clearly not the case. The OP gives an amazing explanation why the word is bad and why you shouldn't use it if you're not black, yet people still post in here trying to justify their use of the word.

People have explained why it's wrong, but they stand by their use. At this point, why be nice about it?

Did you read the OP, is that not what he tried to do? Yet there are still people here wanting to use it.

So you heard music from the US but didn't watch any movies where it was used as a slur?

So pretty much, "I am not going to let some nigger tell me what I can or can't say."
I'm not going to let ANYONE tell me what words I can't use, and neither should you. There's no such thing as a "bad" word. Language isn't that simple. I agree that people should avoid using this word. I think if they do use it, they should be aware of its cultural weight and their audience. If I want to sing it to myself in the shower because it's a song lyric, that's my business. If it comes up in conversation as a matter of fact, I'm not going to censor it unless someone that can hear it is likely to take offense. What matters is context, and saying there's no context where anyone can use it is silly and is counterproductive. Also, I would like to consider myself an ally to people of color, and I think people are largely ignorant about the word, but this approach strikes me as ineffective which is why I've voiced that concern. I'm speaking as someone that needed to learn this in the past, so I'd like to help others do so as well.

As a black person, I can safely say, you're not.

I can't really wrap my head around why it's still a big deal for non-black people to sing it. You're quoting someone else's work. Yeah, if I WROTE nigga into a song of course you're justified in being upset, but I had no say in whether or not x artist should include it in their song so I don't see it being a big deal.

At the end of the day though, I'm not in a frenzy trying to sing (and obviously say) "nigga" or "nigger." If people really don't appreciate it, and they obviously don't, that's pretty much the end of it and I won't. Can't say it makes perfect sense to me though.

I'm white and I find it hilarious how many other white people get upset that they can't use the word.

Taught my little brother straight to not say the word EVER! His fucking friends though have no respect for it......I was just want to slap the sense into them before they get a real beating from someone else.

Well, I'd like to be, then, and I'm open to whatever you have to share.

Nah I'm good. I have said plenty of times that I am not going to hand hold white people to more progressive views. Not my job. There's plenty of information from other black people with far more patience for white fragility than me.

so even though you know why black peeps find offence w/ the word you are cool w/ using it lowkey (by yourself/singing along to a lyric...). So, you're not ignorant about the word, yet... -__-

You come at me implying that I'm a racist (by insinuating that I think of black people as *******) and then you say I'm not an ally without any reason given, and then when I ask you to give me something to help me be a better ally or just to be one at all, you call me ignorant and roll out. That about sums it up, right?

If you can't understand why you shouldn't say nigga, even with this entire thread breaking down why, then you're no ally of ours. We're good, thanks.

The music thing is complicated, at the end of day, nobody is going to be policing what you say or getting offended if you're singing alone in your car or home. Plus I've been to way too many concerts and clubs that were predominately white and I can see and hear them all chanting along including the use of nigga at the top of their lungs to their heart's content.

When did I insinuate that you think black people are niggers? You're not an ally. All of your posts in this thread are reason enough. Where did I call you ignorant? I didn't leave the thread. I am just not going to help you become an "ally". I don't owe you shit.

If you are singing along to a song just make a DJ scratching vinyl sound to replace it.

real talk i wish i could that SHINNNGG sword sound from ol samurai flicks early Wu shit used, always thought that was cool

your two cents is apparently based on never knowing black folks, but getting images & stereotypes from media...and then reacting poorly when actual POC point out why this is offensive

Uggh, O.K sure... keep calling me a "racist".

stop acting like one

I would argue you approach is likely to cause more people say it more often.

Saying don't be racist is making more people be racist

huh

reading dude's posts since, i am 100% not surprised by the Hitchens avatar,

Here's a friendly tip from a white guy. Stop using the word in any context. It's not appropriate, it's rude, and shows a clear lack of understanding of the weight of the word despite you claiming to know so. The reason enzom has no patience for your shit is because of this clear paradox in your attitude toward the word.

Start with some self reflection if you are committed to becoming an ally to their community.
