The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition |OT| Winter is Here

So I just booted this up yesterday and may have a problem. I got peeped stealing a book in the first town you go to after the intro and a dude named Hod eventually started attacking me. I wasn't sure who he was so I iced him. I don't think anyone seen it because no one else attacks me, but upon googling his name I see that you can eventually sell firewood to him and that he may be involved in later stuff with the Stormcloaks.

Only thing is I'm too far removed from the event and all of the auto-saves are now for after that happened.

So is he important enough that I should re-start? Is he needed for anything super important, and is there anyone else I can do the firewood thing with?
He's not important and there are other lumberjacks.

Thank you both! I'm still figuring things out, especially with regard to stealing (going for a archer/thief/sneak kind of build). I see the red-type indicating items considered stolen - even when no one else is around to see it - but I assume that as long as no person (or animal, as I've read they can somehow report crimes) sees me stealing stuff that it won't raise my bounty level or otherwise get me in trouble?

I've been swiping stuff left and right and the only time I noticed a bounty level was that one damn book that led to Hod's untimely death and I do believe it increased after I killed him. It was outside but it's odd that no one is hostile towards me so I'm a little confused.

Sorry, I've been tearing through this and the original OT trying to get answers myself while also not spoiling anything. Appreciate any feedback!

Level 43. It's about time to do the main quest line. How the hell do I get to High Hrothgar or however it's spelled?
Edit: looks like heading from Ivarstead is the best way to go.

I think if you someone sees you steal, then you kill them before they tell anyone your bounty wont go up/guards wont be alerted.

Head south from Whiterun, cross the bridge over the White river. Follow it underneath the Throat of the World. You'll come across a Stormcloak camp and a somewhat hidden path next to it. That path'll lead you straight to Ivarstead. From there, follow the 7000 steps up to High Hrothgar.

Well that's all the Thieves Guild achievements got. Now just have to get the Dark Brotherhood ones (which I'm halfway through), All of Dragonborn, and two left from Dawnguard (the vampire lord ones & the legendary dragon) and I'll have them all.

Yup. Or you could through Helgen and down the path that snakes around the south side of the Throat of the World (the tallest mountain in skyrim) which passes by Haemar's Shame, past the alchemist's shack and past Honeystrand Cave which eventually leads to Ivarstead. That's the path I always take since it seems like a shortcut.

edit: just realized that's what Blue Ninja was talking about.

sidenote: anyone know of a good place to grind for vamp lord perks? Want to get them out so I can cure my character of it since, apparently, the dawnguard have a bit of a thing about one of their members becoming one lol.

Thanks for the help guys.

I became a vampire as soon as possible during the DLC as I sided with the vampires. I used the vampire mode for the rest of the DLC and whenever I sit up a mine or bandit cave.

Getting all the Werewolf perks is a lot easier as you can effectively half the amount needed by using soul trap.

While heading back to Markarth after exploring the northwester corner of the Reach - nabbed an atherium shard and dragon priest mask in one go, w00t - I ran into a horse. It crested the hill ahead of me at a full gallop, a speed I'd never seen a horse run before without me atop it. I was able to angle over to it and hop on as it ran by; it was an owned horse, but no owner to be found. It was at this point I noticed the arrow stuck in its ass.

I head back over the hill it had come from, and shortly after run into a swarm of Forsworn. We were not near any of the redoubts or camps, so I figure whatever this horse did, they'd sent out a scouting party for it. We blew past them and got to Markarth in once piece. I parked him in the stall at the Markarth stables, and the moment I hopped off, two things happened.

First, a courier ran up to me with a letter from an old friend. Second, the horse backed out of the stables and took off like a bat out of hell. By the time the courier was done talking the horse was long gone. I couldn't sprint fast enough to even get a glimpse of it.

Thanks for the lift, fella. I hope it doesn't run into any more Forsworn, but after seeing him go, the worst they'll manage is another arrow in his butt.

I've been enjoying taking shots of landscapes. I find the rugged area around the Reach is particularly picturesque.

A few others:

Early morning haze far above Falkreath:

I've also been enjoying the little stagings Bethesda has dressed the environment up with. Just little stories, usually tragic, in one small scene:

C1domXLVQAEAdwB.jpg

C1yYI1fVIAAxXru.jpg

They give the world of Skyrim a wonderfully lived-in feel. There is danger everywhere, and it's not just all pointed at me. I've also been appreciating how this harsh world translates to everyone re-purposing someone's former abode for their own. Ruins, mines, caves and houses alike get repopulated once their former owners have gone. In a particularly nice touch, Helgen gets repopulated with bandits not long after it is abandoned. Elsewhere, there's a burned out house that's was abandoned, then taken over by bandits who are subsequently killed by frost trolls, who piled up the bandits in a corner. No one gets to keep a home forever in Skyrim.

My favorite so far is a small fishing expedition gone wrong. Here Bethesda provides the punch line, then lets us find the set up.

There are probably a couple hundred varations of people dying in Skyrim, from the brutally tragic (Frostflow Lighthouse) to the comic (the fish were indeed biting Advald.)

In semi-related news, smashing people in the face with a mace has not gotten old yet, at level 53. I'm not yet convinced it will ever get old.

Are Two-Handed weapons very effective in this game? I feel kind of stupid because I've wasted perks on both one and two-handed categories due to indecisiveness...2H makes more sense for an Orc, but not having a shield is kind of annoying.

Actually modding on consoles is incredibly streamlined and simple assuming you're comfortable manually sorting your load order. With a 5 gig dl limit this is hardly difficult.

It's very nicely implemented albeit difficult to customize to the degree were used to on PC. At the end of the day it's easier to spend more time playing and less time triaging your system.

Wait the files don't overwrite each other? Oh wait yeah you guys just get .bsa's. No loose files. That's both a good thing and a bad thing.

But I can do that with MO :p

Nah, he stands in the market all day instead of meeting me in the Falgon.

I've gotten him to actually follow me there by attacking him and then waiting but he still only says "hmmm?" after I get him to calm down.

That's...really odd. It's probably baked in the save then in which case rip. (You might be able to cheese past this on PC with skipping quest stages but I don't think that's possible on console).

My first time up Hrothgar I didn't see the steps/path so I ended up climbing in manually, jumping wherever I could and circling the mountain as I went up. Took far longer than it should have and I eventually joined the intended path about ¾ of the way up.

So I'm playing through "To Kill an Emperor" and I've read that you can escape solitude without incurring a bounty but can't seem to get it to work. Anyone know of anyways to get through it without getting a bounty?

Two ways - hide in a corner and avoid aggroing OR kill everyone/ no witnesses.

Either option is pretty buggy and I've only pulled this off once despite having played the damn quest dozens of times.

Mods can help i.e. Bounties Decrease Over Time or the one that adds a "fixer" to the Ragged Flagon who can remove bounties for a smaller price.

I'm having an issue. I played through a lot of OG Skyrim but never beat it or did DLC. So I start my new playthrough on SE and I'm about level 12 and I get a chance to go to Solstheim in Morrowind and help out some people there.

This lady goes with me into the caverns and basically is the reason I make it through because my attacks aren't doing as much but hey I'm just gonna see what happens. I read this dark book and see Miraak and he threatens me and I come back. They say I have to learn this shout so ok I travel and learn this shout and use it on this rock and this Lurker pops out. I can barely damage him and if I do he heals up so I say fuck this I'm out and run away.

Now I am doing the normal story and end up fighting a dragon and beat the dragon and all of a sudden Miraak shows up and steals the soul from the dragon I just slayed and I got bupkis .

Is this how it will be until I beat this really higher level quest? No dragon souls?? I feel a little in over my head here.

Not using mods on this one yet since I'm using it to get achievements. It's not a big thing and I could just play through it as normal but the ocd part of me likes having the stats page show no bounty's incurred.

Miraak steals dragon souls until you beat the quest, but those souls he steals aren't gone forever.

Another great post, Ghaleon. I'm always amused by the stories you come across. I've spent hundreds of hours in Skyrim and most of the little mini-scenarios you bring to light, I've never encountered.

Oh yes, quite effective. I love my big warhammer.

You can still use block with the 2-handed weapons. It's just not as effective as a shield.

Thanks! What amazes me is I'm still finding new ones. I put in 800 hours back on the 360, and never ran into that bandit draped over the treasure chest, surrounded by wolves, nor the fishing expedition gone wrong. There's been several others as well, such as a Stormcloak soldier wedged into a craggy nook somewhere in the Reach, dead, along with the sabercat in front of him. A two handed axe is next to the sabercat, its blade buried in the ground, like its final downward swing killed it, and with it, the last of the soldier's energy as he bled out.

I have half a mind to start chronicling these as I find them; Unfortunate Ends in Skyrim.

lol, that would be great.

In sadder news, I had to say goodbye to Serana for the second time. I really do like her tagging along, but the game appears glitched, so that whenever I have her with me, I eventually turn into a vampire. There is no incubation period, either. I am normal one minute, then the next I'm surrounded by red haze and I am notified that my vampiric blood is acting up somehow. I can't keep randomly turning into a vampire, so I had send her packing.

I felt a little sad, which I realize is kind of silly, but hey. I took a farewell screenshot of her walking into the sunset. It is going to be a long walk back to Fort Dawnguard, I thought to myself (we were in the western hills at the time). I'm a softie, so I left her an Ebony axe as a parting gift. I'm pretty sure I saw a tear in her eye.

That's a bummer. I'm doing Dawnguard on my next character, and while it's been a long while I remember her being the only companion I actually enjoyed having around.

I just wrapped the Aetherium Forge quest (got the shield) and on the way swung by the nearby dragon lair. I climbed the tower to get the word of power, then headed down to meet the dragon. After a few passes of tossing flames at me, he landed...and refused to fight. We just stood there staring at each other.

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but it happened while I had on a Dragon Priest mask; having a dragon sit there like we're besties was kinda awesome.

I found a shack where a guy was being eaten by a bear inside, complete with boots on the floor and a journal on the table. I also found a mage who's charred body was surrounded by permanently glowing embers and a scroll of flame cloak or something like that. These little passive environmental stories are a-fucking-mazing.

It's astonishing to me how much better the storytelling is in this game than it was in their Fallout games. I'm hooked and immersed in a way I never expected, given my experiences with those games and my dislike of Oblivion.

What the fuck? Why the hell important NPCs (like traders) are allowed to be killed by Vampires? Who the fuck thought this is a good idea? Few traders and one-hand trainer (Amren) are killed in Whiterun. Biggest problem is they aren't replaced and this can happen in any settlements. So far I must be lucky it isn't widespread in all cities. For now, Whiterun is my main goto area to sell my loot.

I keep hearing from guards about vampire activity in Dawnguard. I haven't even visited Dawnguard yet. If I finish Dawnguard related quests, will it stop?

Rex_DX

Yes, completing Dawnguard and siding with them will quell the attacks.

If you're on PC I'd recommend the mods Run for Your Lives or, better in my opinion; Immersive NPCs. They help with this issue a lot.

If you're on console or just running vanilla, you're just going to have to either reload or live with your losses.

Luckily Amren is one of the shittiest One-handed trainers in the game. Still, we've all been there.

That's weird.

Is this something that happened when you had to bring her along for the Dawnguard quests? Or only something that has popped up after finishing the quest line?

I am in the process of doing the DG quests now and have Serana, but I haven't had any issues with her turning me into a Vampire.

My favorite is the Nord stuck on the grindstone in one of the Forsworn camps. Forsworn just grinded his face off.

Unrelated note, the Holidays mod is great. Saturalia in Solitude:

I am in the process of doing the DG quests now and have Serana, but I haven't had any issues with her turning me into a Vampire.

It started happening after I finished the Dawnguard questline. I was just roaming around doing various other quests with her. I was fighting some Falmer alongside her, and then suddenly, I'm a vampire. I dismissed her, played without her for about a week, then tried her again. Things were ok for a while, but then I suddenly became a vampire again.

I do have about dozen mods installed, so maybe that caused the issue. However, most of the mods are simple ones, and none of them relate to vampires. I'm not sure what happened. I just chalked it up to it being a Bugthesda game I sunk a lot of time into. Things always seem to glitch out after 100 hours or so. Haven't run into any significant problems before this.

I let him go. He ain't fighting, I'm not fighting.

You seem to have a good relationship with the animals in the game. The ones that aren't trying to kill you, I mean.

I found a shack where a guy was being eaten by a bear inside, complete with boots on the floor and a journal on the table. That's great. I'm going to have to start paying more attention to these little details. I know I miss a lot.

Yeah, that's something I added this character. I'm always non-aggressive to neutral creatures (giants, mammoths, deer, etc.), but partly to get lots of experience for Illusion, partly because I like to role play, I added others to the list. Bears, wolves, sabercats and spriggans all get Calmed, which helps my Illusion experience. Though it took a while for Illusion to get high enough to work on everyone.

I'm modestly ruthless with people, though. :lol

My next character will be more of a survivalist, building the three houses for the Hearthfire achievements, and will hunt predators (but still ignore deer, mammoths, etc.).

My favorite is the Nord stuck on the grindstone in one of the Forsworn camps. Forsworn just grinded his face off.
I haven't run into it in this edition, but I am remembering that one from the 360. Brutal.

anyone tested this on a Pro? I'm wondering if Bethesda is now following the rules where Pro games aren't supposed to perform worse than the base model.

I just tested it for a few minutes but couldn't really tell a difference, too bad it does still run worse than on the regular ps4 where I played it before... at least it looks soo sharp downsampled on a 1080p TV. I won't continue playing it in this state though ...the framerate is very distracting for me on the pro.

So this is annoying as fuck. Started a new character. Altmer pure mage (still unsure where I want to go with him though). This character is modded. Only have on Unofficial Patch, College of Winterhold shop fix, Realistic Male Faces, Cultist Equipment - Mage Version, & Armorless Dragon Priest Masks and I'm getting little to no gold off of bandits. I'm only lvl 5

Finished up the Dark Brotherhood quest line today. So good.

Need about 14 skill books for that trophy. I'm only finding books I've already read.

Goddamnit, I had two dragons at once that weren't attacking me. I saw a thug running around and figured that it was what the dragons were after. Then they land and holy shit, something is cutting chunks out of their health like crazy. Turns out it's some wanderer dude or whatever with a hired merc and they butchered these things like crazy.

Then as I go up to the dude afterwards in awe, and was pondering leveling speechcraft with him, the damn asshole he hired just killed me on the spot. And my autosave was seconds away but the damn dragons are gone T_T. Just won't reappear for some ungodly reason.

That was so metal. And for naught. Fuck you Skyrim.

This game is taking me over. I've been trying for the past 2 days to make it to Riften to start the Dawnguard missions (to stop vampires from attacking towns) and I just can't help myself from stopping at every little landmark or point of interest. Never really felt a sense of exploration before like I have with this game.

Finally got to Riften and now the Thieves Guild beckons. Got my membership but there is still a ways to go in that questline. That's gotta stop, though, tonight I'm tuning everything else out and heading to Dawnguard.

Been pumping most of my perk points into Archery. Got 60% in bonus so far, zoom, and slow down (as well as a new Orcish Bow) and the bow is finally beginning to be a fearsome option. Took a while but I'm starting to like the archery.

Got engaged and am trying to save up the last little bit to get a house before the ceremony. Don't want the wife to be homeless. Nearly there, but I keep running into trainers and the allure of that next level up is often too much to pass up.

Picking locks for days. I'm at 16 overall but my lockpicking is already at 50. Just wish there was a better way to level up smithing. I see that people recommend jewelry but I just never seem to find materials for that. And the workbench/grindstone aren't giving much exp. If anyone has a quick suggestion for that I'll take it.

This on Switch would be great. I have to travel back home every other weekend and I seriously start jonesing Saturdays when I wake up but can't play. If I could easily take this game with me, hoo boy that would be awesome.

For smithing you're just going to have to grind out the levels. What I do is hoard iron ingots, leather, and soul gems. Then I crank out 30-60 iron daggers, enchant them all and then sell them. This levels up smithing and enchanting very nicely.

Of course if you just wanted to make the daggers that would work too, although I do recommend enchanting for the late game.

Jewelry works too but personally I'd rather save my gems to either sell or toss into my treasure pit. I also have a mod that lets me make weapons and arrows from gemstones.

As for the Switch port, remember, it APPEARS to be a straight port of the 2011 original, not the SE, with all the blemishes and instabilities that entails.

oh shit, holidays in skyrim mod. I need that like yesterday
It's great. There's even fireworks on New Life (New Year), but I missed them because I was slaying Harkon at the time. :lol

Dragonborn is next. Then I'm gonna shelve this for a while. But I'll be back. I always come back.

Yeah, it's a great game to just wander and explore. I've completed almost all the quests, I've leveled everything up as high as it'll go, I've got all the equipment and weapons ... and I still have plenty of fun just tracking down unexplored icons on the compass. Boldly going where no Dark Elf has gone before...

Good. It'll continue to get better. It's just about all I use now. I hope you're leveling up Sneak, too.

If I remember right, I made a lot of hide bracers (or hide something or another). I should mention, though, I was using a "better leveling" mod that made the leveling process less of a grind. I already did the grind the first time through, wanted to spare myself the hassle the second time. Of course, now I'm level 104 and have unused perks coming out my ears, so it's gotten a little out of hand.

For what it's worth, I've had this exact issue with Serana twice, now. Also post-Dawnguard, both times while fighting clustered groups of Falmer. What's worse is that it was a non-curable vampirism for me, where I'd have all the red effects in my Active List, but no innkeepers would point me in the direction of Morthal, and Morthal himself didn't acknowledge my affliction. I couldn't feed, either. More curiously, Serana herself still had the option to turn me into a vampire.

I'm convinced that the bug arose when I accidentally shot Serana during combat with the Falmer; I had to reload an old pre-vampirism save and play multiple times through the dungeon room where it happened until I managed to clear the multiple Falmer and their charus buddies without Serana getting into my field of view. Potions of Cure Disease had no effect, even seconds after the vampirism went into effect, and shrines did me no good in the short run.

For the record, I have no mods.

That's interesting it happened to you, and also with the Falmers. Weird. It's not the mods, apparently. "I guess this is that famous Bethesda bugginess that I've heard about," as Serana might say.

I don't remember accidentally shooting her, but it's certainly possible. I do accidentally shoot my companions sometimes. For instance, I was traveling with Aela the Huntress earlier today, and I shot her. "Damn you!" she said. lol. Sorry! I hope she doesn't start randomly turning me into a werewolf...

RE: problems with Serana- Last weekend I decided to tackle the Dawnguard quest. I looted a blood potion and gave it to her. Later, I contracted vampirism and wasn't sure how as I had been very careful to pop my cure disease potions when needed. Funny thing was, I couldn't get an innkeeper to give me the quest, nor could I feed. I was dejected, ready to succumb and settle down with Serana in the swamps near Morthal. Having spent 1-2 hours fast traveling between inns I was quite frustrated. I decided to see what would happen if I asked her to make me a vampire. Bam! First innkeep gave me the mission and I was able to visit that dude in Morthal for the cure.

Apparently, if Serana drinks a blood potion while she is a companion the game glitches into giving you some bastard version of vampirism.

This is really helpful to know. I'd given her a blood potion at probably the same point you did. I'll be taking it away immediately.

So I'm stuck. In the middle of the Companions quest. Trying to kill: "The Skinner".

Well.

I can't. I can kill all of his lackeys with 1 to 2 hits. But him? He can do up to 80% of my health with one hit. What the fuck is up with this games difficulty curve? I know I'm on Expert but it feels like you need to cheese the game.

Edit: After like 10 attempts I finally got it. Had to use the Call to Arms scroll and the potion to increase two-handed damage. Then had to get Aela to tank a little bit and get him into a hallway.

I had the same issue with her. My solution was a paralysis potion, IIRC.

Ah, damn good point about enchanting. I stumbled into a mine NW of Whiterun that had the Transmute spell and a bunch of iron ore. I transmuted all of it and made gold necklaces and the 2-pack gold rings. Noticed a nice bump in the smithing skill with those, and the gold from selling them wasn't too shabby.

Wish I would have thought to enchant them (or rechecked this thread heh) before selling them. Next time I'll definitely do that to get the enchanting skill bump.
