Hey guys, Sam Mullen here, producer at Atlus USA managing SEGA's JP lineup. I keep seeing this restated and I feel like it's causing a lot of misunderstanding, so I want to just set the record straight once and for all.

Sony has been an amazing partner, and we infinitely appreciate all their help and attention to this series. Without them, Y5 wouldn't have made it.

But their third party production team's involvement was limited to Yakuza 5. They have no involvement with 0, Kiwami, or Yakuza 6. For that, please direct all your love towards Atlus USA and SEGA themselves.

And keep rockin' YakuzaGAF. See you all in the 24th.

Atlus is the best thing that happened to the Yakuza series.

btw. is there any scenario where Yakuza 6 release would be cancelled? I'm kinda worried that about that whole Korea fiasco.

That's cool. Still wish you guys would not have skipped the spin-offs. Ishin would have been nice.

He made his choice, albeit regretable, but let's leave him be, the barrage of responds to that post was a bit too much in my opinion.

YakuzaGAF is better than that right!?

Im playing the japanese version right now and I think gaf will be triggered. OT will be full of wtf japans unless they censor the game hard. Ive played all the ryu ga gotokus before this one and the erotic humour in this one is on another level.

I love the game by the way.

Playing the US release and they did not censor or remove any content from what I can tell. Most of it is funny or in context just goofy, and I've beem taking screenshots of my favorite stuff and I bet I wont be the only one.

Your concern about 'triggering' people is interesting but it probably is good for buyers to be aware that while there is no nudity there is a lot of side missions that involve the sex industry and while it doesn't go into descriptions there are rape and torture victims in the story.

The amusing context might get some lol wtf reactions but content wise it's actually fairly mild compared to something like The Witcher, or amy ten minutes of Trevor from GTAV

I think it's a straight up "GTFO" gif :p
oh I see haha
Kiryu is coming to get that preorder back.

I just wanted an excuse to post that gif.

This is really encouraging to hear, hopefully this renewed interest in bringing the series to the west pays off.
I gotcha...

glad you posted the gif anyway, I might find myself using it elsewhere lol
Agreed. I loved the kids at Sunshine Orphanage and I was glad the game took the time to let me get to know them and get emotionally invested in them.
this, yes. it is is just a video game at the end of the day but what kiryu was doing there really made me believe in the story, it had heart.
Y4 starts with the GOAT Shun Akiyama so that instantly makes it a better game than Y5.
if it ain't Kiryu, then it ain't GOAT. although yes, I definitely should've still took the time to play Yakuza 4 last gen, especially considering the fact that it wasn't a fuckin pain the ass to play like yakuza 5 was

The point is, the characters in 4 are amazing. the best in the series, far superior than 5
i don't doubt it, but my point has been and always will be that Kiryu is why I play the yakuza games. i stopped playing yakuza 5 mainly because I had to start playing as someone else, among a few other reasons in general and even though I should have played yakuza 4, I probably still may not have liked any of the characters more than him.

it's his choice to make, but I just don't understand why people have such an issue playing 3rd party exclusives on Ps4. I remember seeing a post recently in a switch thread of someone saying they'd kill to get a ni no kuni II port, when they game's confirmed coming to a platform for sure

Pregunta. If I only want to play new releases going forward should I be okay? Meaning 0, 1, and 6?

Yes for 0 and 1. Maybe for 6. 6 is a direct continuation of the main Kiryu/Haruka plot in 5 so if you want to get the absolute most out of its plot you might want to play it first. That said you do get the end cutscene of 5 as part of 6's intro so your not left in the dark and you should mainly be ok.

Yup, Zero is a prequel. 1 and 6 bookend the Kazuma Kiryu saga.

You get all the information you need to understand the story of 6 within the game (some of it as optional, additional material for those who skipped previous games).

But of course it's better to play 1-6 if the series clicks with you.

Question relating to something asked a few pages back

Side quests etc seem to be a huge part of the game, is it possible to miss any due to story progression? and I'm guessing once the story is completed to get to go back and explore the town etc?

Also do Kiryu and Majima(is that his name?) have different side quests attributed to them?

If it is like other games you can do side quests whenever. There is no expiration date.

Yes Kiryu and Majima only have unique side quests, if it is anything like the previous games.

Which of the Yakuza games can be played on PS4 besides 0, 5 and 6? Were any of the priors from PS2/3 ported to the PS4? I'm about to hunker down and get a PS4 to get back into this series. =)

5 is ps3 only. You can also play Kiwami and Ishin on ps4.

This is my first post here, but I just want to say that YakuzaGAF has my axe. I've bought all the Yakuza games released in the west so far and I ain't stopping now. I still haven't decided on all of the game I'll be buying this month, since there are so many, but Yakuza 0 is a must buy on day 0! I just wish we'd get the Business Edition over here in Finland :(

Welcome! I've been in your shoes not so long ago so I know the feeling, glad to see another member of YakuzaGAF!

I also feel you on the subject of business edition :(

I thought about importing but that'd probably make me wait for the game a couple days longer, which is simply not gonna happen. I need this game in my veins asap.

Nah, Kiryu is overrated. Akiyama is the man
:p

Though seriously, I feel like with Akiyama we've seen the start/beginning of a legend. Especially in Yakuza 5. And before that in Yakuza 4 we got to know him on a more personal level. I really wouldn't mind seeing him become the next protag of the series now that Y6 has finished the story of Kiryu.

welcome, and thank you for supporting yakuza. you're a seasoned vet of the series, having played them all lol

you played yakuza 6? can you please tell me if
mayumi
shows up again...i hated how kiryu didn't end yakuza 5 with his love interest in the game.

anyways, sure. if yakuza 6 seems like a befitting concluding chapter for kiryu the same way uncharted 4 was for nathan drake, then by all means have the series continue without him. just make sure you include kiryu in the next playstation allstars battle royale :p

although, i fear for the future of this series. yakuza 6 sold only 200K, which means it's been on the decline

Nah man lol

Devs and also people who have played it have said that it is the last chapter in Kiryu's saga so I was basing my comment off of those impressions.

Asia as a whole is picking up the slack on Japan's declining sales from what I've read, still not the best sign (but console sales as a whole in Japan are down so I kinda expected this).

As for your other question, no she does not appear in Yakuza 6 at all.

Got my preorder in for this (and Puyo Tetris) and I'm glad to say I was able to finally give Sega money for these years-old games!

And then the final stretch towards waiting for Kiwami can begin!

I still need to finish 5 but I'll probably buy this day 1. I imagine I won't get spoiled for 5 if I play this anyway, since it is a prequel.

there was one time when a yakuza game was on a non playstation platform and i think it flopped. i don't think this franchise will be multiplatform

Yakuza 1&2 HD was ported to the Wii U, it barely reached 2000 units if I remember the sales numbers reported correctly.

Hey guys, Sam Mullen here, producer at Atlus USA managing SEGA's JP lineup. I keep seeing this restated and I feel like it's causing a lot of misunderstanding, so I want to just set the record straight once and for all.

So it's basically what TimmiT said, good to hear. Happy to see these games being brought over, so thank you and the crew at SEGA/Atlus.

that's the one i was talking about. even for japan, those are poor numbers aren't they?

it's an incredibly poor number in general. There was talks of this being an experiment for a future project, but considering what happened with the port's performance, I imagine that was scrapped.

I'd wager on a new Hero Bank game (another of Nagoshi's franchises) appearing on the Switch before another Yakuza port.

Pretty sure Yakuza 6 did at least 500k units in Japan.

EDIT: 500k in Japan and Asia

Thanks for stopping by and for managing the series. I don't envy your job trying to market a wholly Japanese franchise in the west. The hardcore fans love the game but taking that next step and getting the more mainstream audience seems the difficult part. Hopefully all the extra streamers and media coverage will help because Yakuza 5 barely got any coverage at all, which was fair enough because PS3 was pretty much over by then in the west.

Btw obviously you know the demand for these games but many people on GAF would love a Yakuza 2: Kiwami and I have read lots of posts on how they would also like the Samurai games Kenzan and Ishin. There might be a large cultural barrier for these historic period games but I think most people just want to play a bad ass Samurai. Also PC GAF are also keeping an eye on the Yakuza series, just saying ;)

Pre order for the Business Edition placed thanks to a very helpful Gaffer.

I've done my part GAF. I will do the same for Kiwami and 6.

Now the wait begins.

Wikipedia has Yakuza 6 doing 250k copies in December? That's not great.

But I think a lot of that probably has to do with number of PS4 consoles in Japan. Just 4 million in Japan to the end of the year.

Also the biggest seller in Japan? MGS V:phantom Pain 490k units. Yakuza 6 should be taken in context.

YakuzaGAF, this may be my first time going into the series. From what I'm hearing Yakuza 0 will actually be a great place for a newcomer to start as a prequel instead of a "Prequel Sequel" where understanding the story beats relies on playing past games?

Also, I see quite a few crazy, fun videos shared regarding side activities/events in Yakuza 0, but how much of this actually reflects the whole game? I find it appealing, but don't want to go in with misled expectations that the series has a lot of fun with itself when it doesn't really.

I'm interested in how the story drama is structured as well. Out of curiosity, which of the titles in the series is the closest to all-out gang warfare and multiple factions if any? I'm not planning to skip or anything, but I wanted to know. Perhaps none are like this, which is fine too.

Any input would be appreciated!

that's what i'm saying man, it's not great. i forgot about the rest of asia but even then your source says shipped, not through.

hm i thought ffs15 was the biggest seller? it did like 600K
oh I know and I'm hoping that 0 does well...I'm simply pointing out (like others have done) that waiting for a switch port of any Yakuza titles seems silly right now.
honestly i don't know if sega will port yakuza to other platforms in general. nintendo hasn't done well with selling mature games and yakuza seems pretty closely associated with the playstation brand at this point. 7 games, at least 3 spinoffs, and there was even a limited edition Ps3 that coincided with the release of yakuza 3 in japan, wasn't there?

these are good questions, better suited by someone who's played most of the games in the series though

5 or 6 might be the closest in this regard. 5 features several factions since each character starts in a different city, so different Yakuza factions are represented. But I'd say 6 is closer in terms of all out war, it heavily features the Tojo Clan, Chinese Mafia and Hiroshima Mafia fighting each other. Oh, and while they play a smaller roll, the (story spoilers)
Korean mafia - the Jingwon also appear which was a nice nod to Yakuza 2
. Also, you have another gang that plays a prominent roll in Yakuza 6's Gang creator side missions.

Let me take a stab at this.
YakuzaGAF, this may be my first time going into the series. From what I'm hearing Yakuza 0 will actually be a great place for a newcomer to start as a prequel instead of a "Prequel Sequel" where understanding the story beats relies on playing past games?
Yes, it's a prequel that was meant for newcomers and fans alike. There are subtle nods here and there for fans (like some moves/styles being the more unrefined versions of what you see in future games and stuff like that) but you don't need to know about the sequels to enjoy the story.

This is more of a DMC3 kind of prequel than the MGS3 kind.

Also, I see quite a few crazy, fun videos shared regarding side activities/events in Yakuza 0, but how much of this actually reflects the whole game? I find it appealing, but don't want to go in with misled expectations that the series has a lot of fun with itself when it doesn't really.
Talking about the series as a whole, the main story is mostly serious especially during the later parts of the games. But, I've played every home console game in the series (bar Yakuza 2) and I can't remember ever not being entertained by the sub-stories of the series, in some way or fashion. They are really fun.

In regards to Y0 itself, while I haven't played the game yet, in the EZA stream they showed the beginning of one of these stories and it was the sub-story number
82
. So yeah, there should be plenty of these fun sub-stories in the game.

I'm interested in how the story drama is structured as well. Out of curiosity, which of the titles in the series is the closest to all-out gang warfare and multiple factions if any? I'm not planning to skip or anything, but I wanted to know. Perhaps none are like this, which is fine too.
Shadow already covered this one nicely, but I just wanted to add that there is never a moment like in Mafia 1 where you prepare with your friends and you all go after the rival gangs and stuff like that. The series is mostly focused on stories revolving around individuals who are at these organizations or have ties with them. And while at some point you have to go against rival gangs it's always more of a one versus one (or twenty depending on the situation) deal rather than gang versus gang.

Expect for that one mini-game in Yakuza 6. In that one your gang literally fights other rival groups.

Few pages I asked some questions and the answers convinced me. I'm excited for this game. In it to finish it.
