LTTP: Uncharted 4 is a mediocre game that is really pretty.

Thanks for saving me from playing it, OP. I'm glad just about everyone else has so much fun with the series, but I was let down by U1, U2 wasn't the improvement I'd hoped for so it also let me down, and I played U3 when it was free on PS+ only to quit about two thirds of the way through. U4 has recieved so much praise I'd toyed with the idea of giving it a go, but it sounds like I'll find it similar enough to the first three. For me, they're all style and no substance, but that's just my personal taste, and clearly not the majority opinion.

It felt more like a chore. Maybe it was me, but I could tell that the developers wanted the players to jump around the stages to gain advantages over the enemies but it just felt sloppy. I just ended up finding a corner and blasting fools.

Did you play it as a cover shooter? If so it's by far the worst way too, it's all about running and using Nate's mobility and the environment to your advantage, it's why I always recommend playing on Easy or Normal, you can kinda get away with it on Hard, but any higher and you're just playing a mediocre cover shooter.

TLoU's MP was sublime because of its gameplay, so I think you're dead on.

Seriously, before the arrival of DLC guns (not that it ruined the MP but it definetly gave a bit of an edge to opposing players), TLOU MP was and still is some of the best MP I have ever played. The PS4 version at 60fps made it one of the best.

Completely agreed. And I like 2 and 3. 4 was just paced absolutely terribly and I am baffled how so many people are OK with constant sections of "mash X to continue the game."

Absolutely agree, never really cared for Uncharted anyway though so my opinion may be moot. I much preferred rise of the tomb raider.

Honestly yes.

Now I just hope they get bigger tombs with more puzzles. That really should be the entire game to be honest....

Game wasn't memorable at all. I guess because I don't find linear beautiful games impressive anymore. I had my fill of Uncharted after the third game so this felt more of the same and not exciting enough. The MP was great though.

I disagree with you OP. I respect your opinion. But I disagree, with everything. For myself it's the best in the whole series and my favorite game of our current generation so far. I'm just waiting for a game to top it.

And to keep it 💯. That most likely won't happen until naughty dogs next game. Some developers are out there making great progress of capturing good stories/emotion in their games. But nobody does it like, or better then naughty dog. The Kings of Kings.

I don't think it was mediocre. I loved it. The graphics are still the best I have ever seen. There are slow moments because of the story but I loved the combat. I played it on hard and loved how open the combat was. You could tackle each area in many different ways and really had to use strategy. There were some cool new additions like being able to mark enemies, cool stealth mechanics, and the rope. My god the rope was cool to use in combat Rambo-style. While the set pieces were not numerous, the one where you had to chase after Sam was brilliant game design. If it wasn't spoiled, most people would have enjoyed it much more.

I felt that the story did fall flat in the end and I expected something different with the brother, but it was a great Uncharted game. Still, Uncharted 2 is hard to top while still using the Uncharted formula.

No such thing as a mediocre Uncharted game, least not on the consoles.

Those who think the combat is boring must be playing it like the average cover shooter rather than styling all over the place with the options the playgrounds give you.

I enjoyed my time dearly in it (story and locales were amazing), but by god, the gameplay is in serious need of overhaul.

I'm gonna say it: Remedy should design the shooting for it. Or the Max Payne 3 team.

Or just let me use a M/KB.

The game doesnt encourage this. Its mind numbing on normal and completely unfair on crushing. It was no fun even on hard.

I will just say this, this is my second favorite game of 2016 after The Last Guardian.

Amazing game. I love everything about it.

It's in fact my favorite of all the Uncharted games.

I'm also glad that overall, across the general media, it is in fact the GOTY for 2016.

I mean, isn't this just Uncharted's shtick? It's never had anything above average gameplay (usually skirting somewhere below), but has always been a top notch piece of visual entertainment.
The gunplay was definitely a low point in the earlier games, too stationary shootouts, not enough punch in the weapons and too many enemies with no real challenge except being able of taking many shots, but I think Uncharted 4 corrected all those problems and with the added stealth bits it became fantastic, to me it honestly seems like trolling to say that it's bad.

I finished this last year, and it was my first Uncharted game. I won't say that it's mediocre, far from it. It looks -really- good. The overall production value feels insane. The character acting, voice, the incredible set-pieces, everything was amazing.

Gameplay wise, though, it really didn't offer anything more substantial. I feel like the experience would be similar if I just watched somebody else streamed it. I didn't dislike it, but it didn't left any lasting impression. All I remember is the (very) impressive set pieces.

Are all Uncharted games like this? The series was so widely praised, so I reckon it must be doing something right gameplay-wise other than looking very impressive.

100% agree. The last part in particular dragged so very much for no apparent reason.

Rise of the Tomb Raider on the other hand was way more versatile, had better combat, and variation.

I loved it.

It was a great (albeit safe) game to end the Nathan Drake series.

Rise of the Tomb Raider on the other hand was way more versatile, had better combat, and variation.

This game on the other hand I thought was awful in comparison to the previous TR or hell, even the previous UC games.

No, only 4. Especially 2 is paced much better with a lot of focus on action and set pieces. You had more good puzzles as well. There are slower moments but far, far less than in 4 and the entire mood is much more campy and like Indiana Jones.

PS4 version at launch also had all of the DLC maps. There was nothing else to play that summer so it came at the perfect time.

I've never thought that Uncharted gameplay is amazing, it's an above average playing game that are technical masterpieces with an awesome story.

I just arrived at the auction with Sam yesterday and try to find the game in this game. For now it feels like most of the time I'm supposed to listen to dialogues.
I also liked the shooting more in the other three predecessors. Something just feels off and the constant rope thing which is also telling me all the time that I have to use the rope and how I use it keeps telling me how orchestrated the whole uc4 experience was designed.
This was also done with the other titles but here seems to be overdone.
I hope it gets better from now on.

TLoU might be one of the more underrated games in terms of gameplay. The weight of the weapons, movement of the characters, variety of the enemies, etc. were really well done.

I hold the unpopular opinion that the gameplay of TLoU far outclasses its story.

It depends on the difficulty level. The default difficulty is too easy, and the gameplay completely falls apart on grounded.

I just don't see what people like in this game.

We've had linear cinematic games like this before, and they've been done way better in the past. The flow and pacing of this game from top to bottom is just super dull. It's filled with hours of boring walking and climbing sequences. I'm not saying that the game needs to have more action, it's just the slower paced moments SHOULD be more interesting, but sadly their not. That's partly because the story here just isn't all that good. The story is better than the last three Uncharted games, but that's really not saying much. The story still isn't great, and it's nowhere near the intrigue of something like The Last of Us. This game did not need to be 15 hours to tell this very simple adventure tale.

I don't know, I personally find the high critical praise to pretty disappointing honestly. I think Naughty Dog has done much better in the past.

I really liked Uncharted 1-2, they were great. UC3 was a little half baked but still fun. My least favourite is UC4, which while beautiful, was pretty boring and not something I can replay. Perhaps I just went into it expecting more of an action game.

I really liked the car chase(s), the stealth/action segments in the jungle - but this type of gameplay felt like only 20% of the game.

The platforming sections felt really tired by the 4th game in the series. The exploring sections like the amazon with towing the car wasn't very fun. Too many walking and talking bits. Just seemed like wanted to bring the presentation into a new generation but not the gameplay. UC4 is completely overrated imo.

I'd rank the series:

UC2 >>> UC1 >UC3 > UC4

I liked it okay, but I was dissatisfied with the ending. Especially after everything that happened in the first three games. I expected more from Druckmann after TLOU.

The ending of Uncharted 4 was safe and boring.

I would try to argue against you OP but your right about that.

But then i've always thought ND's other games in Crash, Jak and TLOU were lightyears better than Uncharted which i always saw as a generic third person action shooter game in the same AAA vein as every other game last gen. Made worse with a covering of a hollywood generic story.

UC4 was obviously affected by the staff change and henning's departure. They didn't want to rock the boat any and just close off the franchise with grace. And that's fine, but it doesn't change the reality of the experiences being super safe to the point of bland IMO

You're not wrong op.

People who like Uncharted 4 just have really bad taste in games. And I loved the Uncharted series. But they tried to make it too much like TLOU. Should have kept it to a linear third person shooter with huge set pieces.

And the way the series ended was way too neat.

Although I prefer the more action-packed Uncharted 2, I agree. If the story was actually interesting in Uncharted 4, I wouldn't knock it this harshly for it's dreadful pacing.

Nah. I get the issues with pacing and UC4 being a bit too slow moving for some. But you lose me when you question the combat. This series has had some of the most open, most flexible third person shooter mechanics since day one. The key is in mixing the traversal with the combat.

Also helps that Nate might be the most smoothly animated character out there with his transitions.
The game doesnt encourage this. Its mind numbing on normal and completely unfair on crushing. It was no fun even on hard.

Eh... More than fair, I thought it was easy. Haven't even played Uncharted on normal since the first game. The first game is the only one that's really a bitch on Crushing.

But yeah, Crushing difficulty is often about doing whatever it takes to get through. Minimal playing around. Normal is best for those just going along for the ride, and Hard is the sweet spot for series vets.

People who like Uncharted 4 just have really bad taste in games.

I guess I have a really bad taste in games. Which also means Bloodborne, Doom, Overwatch, Inside, Witcher 3 and many others are also shitty games.

ya got me, so heres some of the attention you wanted.

One of my favorite games of last year. Fantastic game all around. Climbing portions did get a little too much screen time, but thats the only gripe I have with the game.

I'm not a big uncharted fan myself. Haven't got around to this one yet but I don't believe the hype.

But they tried to make it too much like TLOU.

More like not enough like the TLOU.

They copied the slower paced moments from TLOU into UC4, but they didn't have any of the fun resource gathering, interesting hidden areas, and general organic exploration.

Instead, you get tons of brainless climbing and jumping.

The shooting and combat encounters are designed so much better in 4 than any of the others, but there's not enough of it. I still think it's better than Uncharted 1's idea of every three steps there's a new gang of trash mobs to kill, but sometimes I just needed to stop playing 4 and play something that actually required some more input. 2 >> 3 > 4 >>> 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that charcoal rubbing simulator

Can confirm. I like Uncharted 4 as well as all those other games.

You also got me bud.

Insulting those who like the game is a pretty dick move... Just sayin.

I've got to chapter 9 (Madagascar car bit) and so far the visuals are amazing, story seems decent but the gameplay hasn't really blown me away.

How many chapters are in the game

TLOU wasn't 18 hours long

`Eh, it felt like TLOU is a longer game to me, since its action is more methodical and measured, unlike Uncharted 4 who is much more action-y.

As for the topic: I agree with you, OP. It's undoubtedly very pretty, but from gameplay perspective Uncharted 4 single player is really nothing special--I would even dare to call it formulaic and rather boring.

The shooting and combat encounters are designed so much better in 4 than any of the others, but there's not enough of it. Meh, I actually enjoyed the story/walking/cutscene much more than the battles in UC4. In fact, I viewed the battles of UC4 as more of a hindrance to the good things.

I have a deja-vu feeling about this thread. I have already seen at least 3 or 4 of them, and they all pop up whenever some good news comes up on the subject of the game.

Uncharted 4 is weird for me. On one hand, I loved every second that I was playing it. On the other hand, I have no interest to ever touch it again. With Uncharted 2 and 3, I couldn't wait to start a new game, so that leads me to believe the quality gameplay just isn't there in 4. *shrug*

It was the least impressive uncharted game from where I joined which was uncharted 2. Still think it's far from mediocre but wasn't as appealing as the other entries. Think it might have been franchise fatigue because the exploration segments as well as gameplay segments were never something i would look forward to. Voice acting was still good and I appreciate where they decided to take the story but another redraft of the script to avoid some of the clutter or excess roaming that felt forced unlike previous entries.

i will expect alot of posters and replies agreeing with OP because the title is a literal magnet for Uncharted detractors.

I am not saying you are wrong or right, OP....you just need to objectively acknowledge that you are in the minority, that's all..

For example, i acknowledged The Witcher as an artistic and scripting achievement but i think it failed as a game (BAD BAD BAD combat and gameplay). Same thing as the Bethesda RPGs. I know i am the minority so i am okay with it and not trying to convince anyone that they are wrong or 'glossing over certain aspects' of the game.

So yah...it's okay you and anyone else don't like UC4.

Just need to remember you guys are the extreme minority.

There's a Red Letter Media video on UC4 in their Previously Recorded section. They tear it a new arsehole, pretty funny, worth a watch.
