Rockstar Games Announces 4 New Versions of L.A. Noire coming November 14, 2017

Lol.

Remember it looking good on PC.

It looks okay on PC. The Interiors are good. Everything else is pretty meh if you ask me. I wanna see how much detail they put into better textures. If I have to take out a magnifying glass then I will just keep the version I have. Even 4K native on this game as is has a ton of jaggies, so much so I had to use SGSSAA for this one.

If this is one of those mostly resolution improvements it won't be worth it. But if this going to be 60FPS somehow then maybe it will be worth it. I have no idea what they plan to do, and that release date is coming on soon. Not really sure I want this on a console, and god knows a PC version will take forever.

I'm already half way through this game and I don't play it much on PC. I really don't want to do this one again.

Eh, Rockstar isn't one who's afraid to spend money. If they were to do it, I think they'd go full bore on it. And it wasn't a Rockstar production, but did T2's Mafia series use any licensing cheats?

I've only played the demo of Mafia II, and that has been awhile, but I'm 99% sure the city and vehicles were fictional.

Terrible looking game apart from the face animation, so bland.

I could not be arsed with the game in all honesty and have no interest in this at all.

Oh, duh me, you're probably right, and I forgot that Mafia III is set in "New Bordeaux". So never mind.

But LA Noire does stake itself to a real past as a core value of buying the game, so I think Rockstar would invest in the production value under the assumption that it'd pay off.

I'm almost tempted to buy a Switch copy just to support Rockstar actually recognising the thing... bizarre choice though.

If it were my money, I'd rather Rockstar "test the Switch" with The Warriors or Table Tennis or Bully, but hey, whatever gets us any close to GTA: San Andreas Stories (still a dream) is something. And at least R* seems to be putting some custom effort into this revival (though it should have gotten those graphical enhancements too.)

Oh, that brings up an interesting issue actually ...

I was just thinking that the "video faces" would look janky in VR because they're only as good of resolution as the capture equipment of the time and you'd see them up close in 3D ... but there's also the real and unavoidable issue of framerate. Surely there's not 90fps captures of the facial capture, I can't imagine that's what the capture rig was set up for. And the game requires those video files to create the characters, so how will the VR version work with the MotionScan? Will the locked 30fps video files be visibly choppy? Can they interpolate to 90fps/beyond and come up with satisfying results? (The 3D characters and the faces already have problems meshing sometimes, so how will framerate affect the already-rough melding?) Would they dare to replace the video files with fully 3D faces resynched to the audio files (and would that effort be worth the work?) This VR prospect seems particularly complicated, not sure how it's going to work.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files for HTC Vive adds new layers of immersion and realism to Rockstar Games’ blockbuster crime thriller by putting you directly in the shoes of Detective Cole Phelps. With each of the seven cases rebuilt for virtual reality, players can use real world physical motions including grabbing, inspecting and manipulating individual clues or using the detective’s notebook to make notes or draw freehand. Experience first person driving in VR with additional real-world vehicle interactions including steering, operating car doors, changing radio stations, shooting from vehicles and much more.

I vaguely remember not enjoying this, but I might give it another shot.

Would have much rather had Red Dead make the jump before the sequel.

Surely the code is salvageable.

What a weird and frankly stupid choice of game in their catalogue to remaster and put on current systems. There was a really obvious choice of what game to remaster for current systems here, and this was certainly not it.

I don't know anyone who loved this game, and it doesn't look like that's far different from the reactions I'm seeing here either lol.

This is hilarious. A simple port of the 360/PS3 version of GTA V for the Switch would do insane numbers but instead they do this?

This. I have 0 interest on play L.A Noire again (forgettable at best) but even I will get GTAV on Switch to know why all the buzz about it

Yeah it's definitely a selling point for me, so I hope you're right.

Hopefully this means Max Payne 3 has a shot.

I'd be there day one as well. Best shooting mechanics I've ever played. So much fun.

No, I know how the game will control in VR: they'll change the 3rd Person camera and cursor mechanics to familiar VR grabby/touchy/drivey/shooty/punchy controls, that's clear.

What I'm saying is that, when you put the helmet on, the VR world you see will be running at one framerate, and the video file layers used to create faces will not be running at that same framerate (...unless they hate you and made a 30FPS VR game to appease the Dramamine industry.) Maybe they'll use some motion-smoothing technique to blend it a little and it'll work out somehow (as has already been pointed out, that's an ugly proposition,) but inherent technical issues of LA Noire will affect the VR version unless they're doing something not described in the press release for the VR version.

Anyone realize the lack of full-fledged, current-gen R* dev/published titles? We've only been getting games that were released on last-gen systems from them for PS4/XB1. I'm aware that RDR2 is coming... But that's the only game announced in 4 years of current-gen. How many games did they release during PS3/X360 days? GTAIV, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire, RDR, GTAV... And what else?

Did they make any gameplay adjustments? I know they wanted to force you to be a detective but I kinda want to have some fun sometimes too...especially in an open world.

Uh wow, I didn't expect the Switch rumors to be true, yet here we are. Interested in seeing the eventual screenshot comparisons.

They are too busy milking GTA online.

Yeah it is disappointing. They also had Midnight Club: LA, along with GTAIV's Episodes from Liberty City and Undead Nightmare DLC for RDR.

They are putting more money towards their big franchises and they are getting bigger and harder to make. It's like every month I get an email about another GTA Online expansion, I expect the same will occur with RDR2.

I honestly would not be surprised if GTA VI is not that far behind RDR2. Just in case RDR2 Online is up to par with GTA V.

The only reason for this remaster would be because there is likely some interest in a sequel. Maybe they want to see it will sell enough to warrant a sequel.

Their games are getting bigger/more ambitious, which makes them more expensive and longer to create, and each one is making massive money. It's natural that they aren't going to mess with the formula too much.

But... why? Why this game, of all the games from their last-gen catalog? Why not Red Dead Redemption (which never had PC release to begin with) before it's sequel comes out, or even GTA IV?

Because the open world is about as taxing on hardware as No More Heroes' and the rest is a hidden object game

I liked what I played, but the problem was that the main feature of the game, reading the faces when they tell something and responding to it, has its clear problems.
You might know that the person doesn't tell the whole truth, but you always have only truth, doubt and lie as the only three option, you simply don't know how to truly interpret these three options in any situation. Like you want to use "Doubt" because you think that the person doesn't tell the whole truth and you want to get that out carefully, but instead your character straight throws heavy accusations around instead.
When a main feature doesn't work well it's a problem. And that's a pity because the presentation, sound and gameplay mechanics otherwise are really good.

Don't forget Table Tennis!

I don't foresee this being an issue. I watch un-interpolated ~24-30 fps video in VR all the time and it's not a problem. It's always clear it's not 90hz, but it still appears as fluid motion. Even if the interpolate the original 30 fps faces to 60, it'll be more than sufficient.

It sold quite a bit, and yet Team Bondi closed up shop a few months after the game launched. Mind you that if we were to get a sequel, there would be another group that would work on it of course. Question would be if the demand would be there for a sequel to be made and just how much would be sold on all consoles since if there are a good number of people who buy it on Switch, that could cause Rockstar to possibly consider a "GTA Experience on the Go," as long as Nintendo decides to play along. Personally myself, whether if we got to see "L.A. Noire" or even something like "N.Y.C. Noire" or any other kind of city Noire spinoff, I'm all for it and what it can provide in the story telling narrative.

Either way, I would consider checking out L.A. Noire again when it comes out. Bonus points if it also gets to enjoy "enhancements" from the PS4 Pro and the X1X (since the system would launch a week before L.A. Noire does).

Team Bondi internally were a mess and mismanaged during development. Remember Sony originally owned the IP to publish before wiping their hands clean of it and giving it to Rockstar. I mean, Rockstar had to cancel E3 showings for the game because it kept missing deadlines and being in rough shape to the point they had to step in and help finish it.

Even now McNamara learned nothing it seems and his last project got canned.

Cool, might get it for PS4. Really loved playing through the original on xbox 360. But i'm more hyped for the VR bit.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Shouldn't need to be a test. L.A Noire is one of Rockstar's successful IP pillars next to GTA and RDR due to selling over 6 million copies. At least according to Take Two.
It bankrupted the studio that developed it and was a highly flawed game with a VERY mediocre ending despite that incredibly interesting premise. :| Don't think Rockstar is making a sequel considering the cost to do so with that kind of tech unless they're completely scrapping said tech completely instead of iterating on it, and replacing it with something like faceware.
