NeoGAF 2.0.0.1 Update: A Space Odyssey

I preferred the more restrained look of the previous front-page layout (I thought it was perfect). Not fond of the sub-section colour coding and round avatars. The individual thread UI and new typeface are good.

So, my feedback: The light theme is an abomination, but the dark theme is absolutely ok. I don’t like the different colors for the forum in the mobile Version left side menue however. Also, this menu looks rather busy.

All in all, no further complaints from me so far. I’m absolutely ok with the orange in dark theme.

Different strokes for different folks I guess - personally I like the light theme, not such a fan of the dark one (it's not bad, but some of it is a little tricky to read - the buttons stand out well and pop nicely but thread titles are a bit mushy).

I like the update.

One issue however, I browse on my iPad. Scrolling through posts seems to have a large amount of stutter, whether scrolling slow or fast. Never had this issue prior to the new update. I’m sure it will be ironed out.

I never asked for this.

But I think it's just because it's new. I'll get used to it. The design itself is awesome, the usability comes with time, I guess.

There is. See above :messenger_smiling:
I meant the bar at the top, it's always there even when you scroll down, I don't see the point as going to the top of the page is really easy and it just takes up space. (It also flickers when I start a new line in this edit dialogue).

Also, it now takes two* clicks to go to a different forum (say from gaming to off optic), having those links ever present was one of the good things of the old design. Most of this nav bar is just a giant search field, which is one of my least used features.

*three clicks actually, because I have to hide the giant sidebar again. It's also obscured by the posting notification, so if I edit this post I have to wait a few seconds before I can navigate to a different sub-forum.

I know the previous re-design also had a nav-bar, but it was slightly smaller, had way more useful links (given the option I would've hid it as well though), and called less attention to itself by matching the colour scheme.

I woke my computer from sleep mode and neogaf was still open in a tab with the old style, I clicked on a thread and was immediately confused and tried to trace my footsteps back to the moment I stepped through a portal into a parallel universe. Then I remembered about the update.

Thanks for having a dark theme available from the get-go. So many programs and websites don't offer it and insist on burning what remaining eyesight I have left out of my sockets.

only dislike so far is the avatars beside thread titles... i like the cleanliness of no imagery and just thread titles...

just personal preference. same reason i still like gamefaqs haha or used old reddit over new reddit.

not a big deal tho. otherwise looks nice so far.

and the avatars beside thread titles does look okay on mobile. overall looks pretty slick on mobile.

I agree, I would like the option to hide them as well. It makes the list of threads too sparse

Runs a bit slow on my Chromebook but everything does these days. I much prefer the font and love how compact it is.

Good job!

I have one suggestion. Can we have an old gaf logo instead of user's avatar at the topic title? It ruins the design of new layout tbh.

I like it so far, just that already visited threads look a little too dark with the dark theme. Bit more contrast plz?

Michele

you.
Ha, ha, ha, ha!

I really like the new change. Good job on your work, EviLore EviLore !

Also, the peoples complaining about avatars, etc. are those just not used to it. Do not worry, you'll get used!!

What we begin with is a clean, responsive, modern look that bears enough similarity to the existing site that you'll feel right at home.
This is the complete opposite of how I would describe it lmfao. It's not a nightmare or anything but definitely unnecessary and goofy looking... And the colors make it look very 90s, not exactly modern lol. But reading through the first page of comment at least it seems I'm alone in this and everyone else likes it... surprise surprise.... in that case congrats at least!

when i first saw it i thought the site was hacked or crashed

it's terrible, why does GAF looks like Twitch now ?

the only good thing about it is the OP's Avatar next to the thread

i always liked GAF for it's simple design

It's definitely new, lol. I wouldn't say it is bad or anything, I just got to get used to it. I do like the older design better because it was simpler, but I'm sure with time I will adapt to this one.

This was a surprise, i liked the new visual it looks modern and cooler.
It also reminded me of Overwatch for some reason

So I just had the site swallow a giant OP I was working on. Shouldn't it be autosaving while you're working on posts? Or is that just my imagination.
The create a thread option needs to be brought back and not pushed onto the Facebook styled post system. That's something I can attest to one 1000%

It feels like the Web 2.0 rush all over again with so many floating bubbles and colours. I'm liking some of the new functionality (hooray, alerts work on mobile finally!), but visually this is gaudy as fuck to me and I think it's a downgrade in terms of readability and the way information is presented.

Having used the new layout some more it's growing on me,

Just a personal nitpick speaking as someone who doesn't know how doable any change is:
The main page looks a bit overloaded with information and coloured elements. The old design was basic but easy to read and now you enter and between the coloured circles, the bright "new" signs and the coloured arrows you sort of don't know where you should be looking at

I think something like this would look nicer and would be easier to read:

Why is the twitch integration thing so massive on the homepage? It's pretty much the size of the forum panels. (Yes I use some extension that colours everything sepia tone)

Also, I liked how the main page used to basically just be a list of the forums, I don't see how this is improving functionality in any way.

This looks so freaking weird. My eyes hate it (understand I've been on NeoGaf for like 15 years lol), but the new features seem to make it worth it.

And what happened to the information that used to be available under thread titles? You used to have written information telling you who started the thread, who posted last, and how many pages there were. Now I just see an avatar and the title.

It's funny how times move. I'm on a dark website with frames. This really is a 2001 update. But I always liked this kinda layout anyway. Does feel discordy. All good.

One thing. Font feels smaller. I'm using +1 magnification now, as it's easier to parse larger (on desktop).

And smilies just got real rowdy... also with white border.

It's still there for me. At least on PC.

Also, I pretty much never use the search feature here, but often jumped around boards. I now have a massive search bar constantly running across the top of my screen (and it's black even though I'm using light mode) taking up the majority of the Gaf toolbar real estate. The old forum tab links were sooooo much more useful.

yeah this is some bullshit use of space. Especially that left hand bar which adds nothing of value but takes space.

Seems to be speedy.

But the dark theme is having too much...colors, kiddy, less minimalistic?
Something about the orange outlines...
Also those slanted white lines, can you get rid of them?

Hmm, I took a screenshot of how it looks in Chrome on a Mac desktop. I'm pretty sure I could still see that stuff on my PC at home last night, but I thought maybe they updated something and removed that information.

The toolbar is so weird.

Here it is with a small window width.
ukrBVYj.png

Ok, says Neogaf forums, no search bar. Makes sense I guess but no one's viewing a desktop browser this narrow.

Here it is at the width I usually read it at.

iqZXW9v.png

"Forums..." now being truncated so that the search bar can be huge. Why????

At widest widths, it goes full retard and the search bar completely replaces the word Forums

Well, layout is fine for those who switch forums often, but i still don't have the option to hide user avatars. Bummer.

just gonna do a little cross posting here:

on Chrome browser via windows 10 desktop:

Bugs:

avatar icon next to name in upper right corner looks squashed in X. like it's scale is: Y: 100 X: 50

Comments/Crit:

I don't love some of the banner ad placements - particularly the ones in between threads, really breaks the UX, very jarring.

Also, I think there needs to be more distinction on the thread page. everything blends together, the thread titles dont stand out, what stands out the most are the creator avatar images, but thats like the least important thing

not feeling the animated grey circle graphic that occurs when you click the gaming forum on the left hand column.

i miss the grey color in the icon - dunno why that had to change.

miss square avatars, maybe try rounded corners over circles. circles are just very annoying to cropping avatars well imo. less real estate too. it reminds me of yahoo fantasy football avatars. i prefer the old ones. i get its trying to keep the rounded style thats been worked into the redesign tho

like a lot of whats been done/being done, but some things just feel like change for the sake of change. a lateral move in some cases, a backwards move in others. I think overall i'd prefer to be using the old layout still.

Ok im on mobile and still too busy, need to tone down on the orange contrast, and shorten the top banner, wasting space, i need to scroll down more to read the first post.

on the main forums page you should get rid of the

"-->" icons.

its adding extra visual clutter. each forum container is a clickable area that all bring you to the forum, you dont need the identifier and icon. it essentially is adding 6 more circles shape to the visual layout plus 6 more colors, making more complex than it needs to be.. and looking at the center of the page you have the "-->" icons close to the right columns "main title" icons which tends to be distracting, visually heavy, confined as a whole composition

also, my eye goes straight to the bright orange --> icon ( and rest of center --> icon congestion) in the center of the page. those --> icons just really take you eye away from the main circle forum icons, particularly the left hand side.

just get rid of them or make the circle icons very tiny/all one greyscale color thats unobtruvsive... people know to click into a forum/ click a link when they see it. if you want a middle ground identifier, just put a grey arrow in the bottom corner of the forum container block without the circle., or do like a monotone flat quarter circle shape with the arrow icon, but no overlap because that also adds complexity ( in an area that doesnt need it all and is overly complex already)
