Why not? Helps people who want games with those themes to find them and perhaps helps those that want to avoid them avoid them.

More generally, if you’re going to have a store with no quality control and thousand pieces of cholera infested shit posted for every one game remotely worth playing and no active curation despite being a multimillionaire company the least you can do is have more tags to help people sort the regular turds from the rancid turds.

Queer was born as an offensive, on the nose word to define homosexuality mixed with cross-dressing. It was made famous by The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Now, the same people want this word to be taken seriously after so many years... And they talk about representation and exclusive language.

um ok? if the game has a story that heavily focuses on it then i don't see the problem.

still...i'm getting tired of this lot constantly complaining. why is there a 1300 word article for a stupid bloody tag? also fuck steam for backing down to them.

also like it has already been said...now i know which games to avoid. if i see any games with LGBTBBQWTFROFLOMG+ then i'm just backing the hell out.

i just had a look. they are tagging a lot of games. you have:

GTA V
Witcher 3
divinity original sin 2
fallout 4
borderlands 2

just to name a few.. they seem to be really looking for the slightest excuse to slap this tag on as many games as possible. 🤮 🤮 🤮 some of the descriptions:

“While not a big part of the game, the player can find out that the previous lookout named Dave was a gay man. There are notes and audio that show how Dave struggled with his sexuality.”

“One of the main characters, Trevor, is suspected to be bisexual.”

"Main character of either gender has a variety of romantic options."

“This game has a gay minor character.”

“Possible suggestive interaction if the main character has a specific perk.”

Tags are user generated so this is pointless like all the others. Plenty of things are tagged with nudity that has none.

i'm not a straight guy so in a way i guess i'm part of the LGBT community but i really don't feel part of it. i actually hate it and how toxic it is.

so it's not just all "straight boys" in here.

Straight boy loses: nothing.

Gay folks gain: a possibility to find content they might be interested in.

Therefor: FUCK THE SJW!!!!111!!

NeoGAF.
Why is a sexual orientation and state of identity in any way influencing what video games you purchase?

This is what I don't understand about any of this noise. I'm straight and I'm a man, my life doesn't revolve around either my sexual orientation or my gender.

I don't even cognitively acknowledge either throughout day to day life as I'd wager basically everyone doesn't, yet this questionable subset of people hinge their entire existence on these things..

It's nonsensical.

They still curate them, no? I remember when tags first came out and people were tagging MGR with "Nanomachines" and such.

That would be useful for ero games and VN but then again why not separate this into lesbian, gay, trans, queer, bi? Would make more sense.
Also tagging yaoi and Yuri VN as lbgt is wrong as they are not the same
Many gays consider yaoi offensive

As a straight man you don´t need tags in your life because you can safely assume that everything around you is catered towards you.

If you and your wife/GF feel like watching a romantic comedy you just pick a random Jennifer Aniston flick and you are good to go.
For a gay person things are different - only a tiny fraction of content is catered towards just them.

Therefor a Tag is really cool FOR THEM and does not hurt YOU in the slightest.

You say it doesn't hurt me, it doesn't hurt me this is true, but it does come into my purview more than things such as this ever should.

Why do I hear about things involving sub 5% of the population nearly as much as I do relating to things centered around the other 95%? Why when I go on the internet, watch TV, or listen to the radio is a large subset of this interaction whether it be the news, gaming websites, social media or any other form of information intake frequently relating to LGBT whatever?

It's call OVER-representation and it's getting out of control.

A tag like this on Steam I get, for devs who may want to use such.

*But* I was on Wikipedia recently (for the only form on content worth reading there- anything 'controversial' on Wikipedia is pure sh-t, thanks to the official trolls who are allowed to curate all content). And across the top of the page are massive banners and ads for *gay pride*. WTF! What the f-ckity f-ck! Sexual propaganda promoted on every page of an *encyclopedia*.

You know, when I was borrowing a volume of the Encyclopedia Brittanica from the school library for homework (yeah, they allowed that- or perhaps never noticed such expensive books had fallen into the general lending collection- snigger), the first thing I thought when leafing thru the cig-paper thin pages was "why doesn't each page have a giant promotion for gay sex - I mean isn't that the no.1 concern of a publication designed to catalogue Human knowledge".

Well, actually no, I didn't think that- cos I am *sane*.

Are we going to be *forced* to celebrate for a month those Humans with a sexual fetish for Human waste as well? Ah- I forget, some animals are more 'equal' than others. Indeed should coprophiliacs get their own tags on Steam as well- or are they *sub-Human* in the eyes of those that push the various gay agendas? After all coprophiliacs must surely be born with this desire, cos who in their right mind would suddenly wish to convert to such a practice?

I do not consider myself 'normal' for normal simply means average, or the centre of the bell curve. But I do *not* demand ordinary society celebrates whatever properties move me away from the centre. I don't take offense cos my differences don't have tags on Steam or a banner promoting them on Wikipedia.

So what the f-ck is this 'pride' sh-t *really about? When I was a kid, I was offended by the casual persecution of gays by the british police (wholly as a mechanism to create leverage over gays in high office who could be blackmailed by the state over their sexuality). The law clearly needed changing to keep the filthy agents of the state out of the personal sexual choices of adults. And then the law was changed- good. But, of course it didn't stop there.

We live in an Age where everything that can be weaponised is weaponised. And in this case I'm sad that ordinary gay men and women don't fight back against this weaponisation of their sexuality.

What does q+ mean?

the Q stands for queer, and the + refers to Intersex, Agender, etc.

You say it doesn't hurt me, it doesn't hurt me this is true, but it does come into my purview more than things such as this ever should.

You seem to be awfully hurt over us finally being seen as actual, legitimate people rather than how religious conservatives paint us as. LGBTQ+ people are among the most persecuted and at risk groups in the world. That risk doubles if you are also a person of color. If anything we are under-represented in a positive light. I'd ask you to educate yourself on LGBTQ+ issues, but I suspect that it would be asking too much of you.

The_Mike

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
This is great. It makes it way more easier to steer away from games that have this shit in it.

The devs must be sad though, since it will mean much lesser sales for them.

No offense but your talking points are coming off about as comprehensive as being derived from a pamphlet. You've been seen, you've been seen for a very long time, I remember gay pride stuff from when I was a kid in the early 90's

You have the same rights as everyone else, you can get married, you can live a relative normal existence without persecution, hell I'd argue that me being a white straight man I have better odds of being persecuted in this psycho day and age than you, especially where I live on the West Coast.

We all get it but the fact is you and trending conglomerates using you for PR don't need to remind us 1,500 times a year.

We see you, we know, we get it, but the gravy train of victimhood is coming to an end and things are disproportionately ratcheting up fathoms beyond their stance and position in society, and people are frankly getting tired and annoyed of it.

Like others said, it's useful because not only you can search for games with focus on such content, you can also block them. That's what i will be doing probably since the games with this tag seem to be dating sims and other similar crap.

You know when this will become a problem? When they somehow disable the ability to block this particular tag or if this information can be used for when they want additional reasons to ban someone or if some activist/journalist can see you are blocking it so he can attack you because you are "homophobic".

It will also be an issue if they include more games in this tag that don't particularly have this as a focus but may have an LGBTQ character in them or something so pretty much all new games will have it.

Glad they added it, Hope they’ll add optional lgbt or main mission lgbt also. Usually i don’t want lgbt content when I’m playing a game. Straight tag should be added too.

Huh? This is what DynamiteCop! DynamiteCop! is talking about, LGBTBBQ has been represented in media and popular culture in positive ways for as long as we can remember now, and at some point the narrative that you're an ever-oppressed victim class starts to ring false when no one is allowed to speak ill of you and we see you in the media constantly despite being a relatively small percentage of the population.

This is already happening.

Still don't get why this is offensive given the shit ton of random tags Steam has.

Plus you can filter them so it's a helpful thing, much like 'zombies' gets a total miss from me.

In before someone conflates you as categorizing LGBTQ+ with zombies.

So being LGBT makes it so you only like games about LGBT? This seems pretty stupid. How about an SJW tag too? Then, at least, we can all know which games to avoid like the plague. :messenger_winking_tongue:
