So, the PS5 Event...

Overall, I think it was "fine". I'm definitely glad we saw the console now and, tbh, I'm quite surprised with the design. Maybe wouldn't say it's a favorite of mine, but it's got style and that's cool. Matches up well with the controller, as well. Kind of does look like a router, though. So we have a router and a fridge for our next-gen systems xD.

THE GREAT:

>Ratchet & Clank: I was REALLY impressed with this one. Even closer to that Pixar-level quality graphics, LOTs of particle effects (in fact the gears reminded me of Knack; maybe appropriate since that IP is probably dead). The location-hopping being instant and seamless not only looked great visually, but opens up some creative game design possibilities.

It's kind of funny that the two games showing this so far (R&C, The Medium) couldn't be more different in terms of mood and tone x3.

>Horizon: Zero Dawn 2: Just fantastic overall. Gives a strong sense of exploration and adventure. The turtle "boss" near the end was impressive as well.
And they've got Lieutenant Daniels from The Wire in here! Maybe they can team up with Aloy and catch Marlon, Season 5 let him get off way too easily.

Overall for me this and R&C were easily the stand-outs.

>Presentation Quality: No shitty webcams like the Inside Xbox event, professional the whole way through as it should be. I'd also say the pacing was
very good, too, even for being a relatively longer event (1h30m)

THE OKAY:

>Demon's Souls Remake: Not about the game itself (it's gonna be fantastic), but moreso there being no actual in-game gameplay. Just CG cutscenes, more or less.

>Resident Evil 8: Same issue as Demon's Souls Remake.

>The Indies; MOST of them look good or at least interesting and worth checking out, but I dunno if some of them necessarily "looked" next-gen tbh.

>2 SKUs: So I guess VFXVeteran VFXVeteran was right on this one, more or less. Sony's approach doesn't seem as "radical" as MS's might be (provided Lockhart is actually coming out), but I didn't expect them to do an all-digital SKU, that's for sure. At least not at launch. I honestly don't think simply removing the disc drive is gonna shave off that much in cost, since disc drives are like $20 or so at the bulk they need for these systems, not to mention Sony makes their own and doesn't pay royalties on Blu-Ray like MS so...

....I'm guessing they're also cutting back on storage space, IF the 825 GB model is the higher-end. Maybe an SSD half as large as the non-discless version using 32 GB modules instead of 64 GB ones? Because they still need to maintain the same SSD I/O performance across both, no questions there.

THE MEH:

>That Furry Game: I've got nothing against furries or anthropomorphic characters, but that Bojack/Tuca & Birdie or whatever it's name is game..I can't understand or believe what I was watching there. It had me laughing the whole time. Maybe it'll be a fun game for its audience, who knows. But I just found it funny.

>That Nick Jr Game: Don't know it's name, but you know the one. The one with the character that kept looking back at the audience like Dora the Explorer, playing out like a Nick Jr. episode in videogame form. Again, maybe not the intended audience for that, but I doubt almost anyone watching this show was the intended audience, either. I couldn't help but laugh.

------------

OVERALL?

I have to give the show as a whole a 7.5/10. If it wasn't for HZD2 and some of the new IP in the last 10 or so minutes it'd probably be a bit lower, but don't take that to mean I thought the games were "bad". I actually liked most what I saw, and even those furry and Nick Jr. games might be fun for their intended audience. At the very least, a lot more games are on my radar, including the obvious 1st-party stuff.

In terms of anything wowing me as possibly next-gen visually, well I think that easily goes to HZD2 and R&C, once again. There were some games that didn't look as good as I thought they would though, like GT7 (though I'm sure that's gonna be a really good game where it counts), and some that didn't necessarily look "next-gen" too much at all even if they did look good nonetheless. However, there was WAY more actual gameplay here than the Inside Xbox event, which is a net positive, and we also got to see some 1st party here too, another positive (I know the Inside Xbox show was not for 1st party but still). Also unlike MS, Sony made sure to clarify game status right in the show itself; we shouldn't have had to wait until after Inside Xbox to learn about Scorn and The Medium being next-gen only and Xbox exclusives, for example.

So do I think this was better than the Inside Xbox show? Yeah. By how much? Well, not too much TBH. I'd say maybe about a point better at most. Then again I wasn't one of those dudes who thought the Inside Xbox event was an unmitigated disaster (and fail to see how anyone else could actually justify thinking it was on that level honestly). Thankfully I kept my hype in check but was still satisfied more or less. I'm looking forward to the Xbox show in July and more stuff from Sony and Microsoft leading up to launch, while I still scratch my head wondering why they both seem so eager to do dual SKUs out of the gate...

Because that's, like, really baffling me dude :pie_roffles:

The first party showings were great. I can’t help but be a little disappointed in the representation of third party support.

Pragmata was the only Capcom game, Square has more and bigger games than that, no Batman or anything from WB games, nothing from Ubisoft(?)

I want to see more of these upcoming games and at this point feels like they will be drip fed through August.

Are these companies saving their big third party games for their own events?

Did you really deserve your own thread for this?

Does anyone "deserve" threads, honestly? I just wanted to make one so, did it.

Yes he did

I actually think Demon souls and RE8 was in game just not "gameplay"

TBH i expected Demon souls to look better than it did

Yeah those two were def in-game, but not gameplay like I was hoping. Maybe parts of RE8 were? It's hard to distinguish in that one's case with the FP format and all.

I'm at least glad there was a lot of actual gameplay here. Hopefully we get similar amounts if not more at MS's event next month. The "gameplay" meme's gotta get taken off life support at some point lol

10/10 show for parents looking to buy their kids a PS5.

8/10 for me.

Lol yeah, but that's the thing isn't it? How many parents are gonna be buying these systems at launch? Those kids are getting PS4s and Switches, maybe XBOs too. Next-gen systems are gonna be too pricey for the young'ins.

Glad you got more out of the show than I did; might've believed one too many rumors from earlier, but overall it was a pretty good show for what I expected. I miss the live-action E3-style theatrics tho, ngl.

Feels that way. I had a feeling 3rd party stuff was gonna be iffy when they led off with GTA...5. I was honestly expecting a segway into GTA6 but nope. But like you said, companies like Rockstar can do their own events for that type of stuff and get big viewership all the same.

Really it’s just my favorite franchises getting sequels that made the show alright for me.
RE8 and Ratchet in particular. I was hoping for Silent Hill but got disappointed.

I was surprised by the console at first but the more I look at it, the harder it is for me to like it. Maybe if I see it in person or being held by an actual person on a video will it change my mind.

OT. I share most of the same thoughts as OP. I thought it was a good showing. Just like the Xbox event. But you can't really compare the two I don't think, since the Xbox event didn't show any first party and there where varying levels of actual "gameplay" in both events. Anyway, I'm not one to get bent out of shape when they show indies or third parties at these events so neither of them bothered me. I think we will have to wait for the xbox event in July in order to compare first party showings. But I will say that I hope Xbox shows more, and more gameplay as well.

Console is butt ugly though. Complete opposite of their controller. That one really surprised me. Especially because I actually like "out there" designs. Something about it just isn't resonating with me.

As a PC player I'm wondering how many of the games I'll be able to play eventually. I usually reserve hype for when I know a game is coming to a platform I can play it on so I'm patiently waiting for more info from a few titles.

Was pretty mehhh

Im not a huge Horizon fan.

I contributed to little devol inside so i was happy to see that.

But other than that...ehhh Spiderman 5 lol

Rest of the games are joints i would rather get for free on epic games store or gamepass.

Spiderman miles morales was a shock to me. May make ps5 day one. Just will be on fence for sure. I left thinking will xbox fuck up in July?

I think the July show will be fine. Really the pressure is on Halo more than anything. Almost seem insurmountable, but if 343 can pull it off, it'll be some big stuff. And I'm really looking forward to what the other studios are doing with stuff like Fable, Perfect Dark, etc, both visually and in terms of gameplay.

The Spiderman stuff, is that on PS4 as well? I liked it; seems like they want to bring the games closer in with the Into the Spiderverse films (well, there's a second one coming anyway).

I'd say the digital edition would save more than 20 quid thicc_girls_are_teh_best thicc_girls_are_teh_best

They are saving not just on the drive, but also on the overall "shell" size, plus on some internals, most likely, since they need less space.

Dunno; the digital system looked the same size as the non-digital one in the stream to me. Disc drives honestly don't cost that much, and for Sony it's even moreso as they make their own and don't pay royalties on Blu-Ray. What internals could they be saving on with the digital version?

Maybe the PSU? But then again how much power does a disc drive typically use? Other than the PSU and the wiring for the disc drive I can't think of any other internals they'd save on by just removing the disc drive. So maybe they are cutting back on something else there, too, which if so I'd figure is the storage amount going with smaller capacity NAND chips.

Guess we'll see soon though. I'm still kind of shocked with the dual SKU approach tbh.

People are already doing (more) router memes for the console design which are somewhat apt. Still though I appreciate them trying to go for some unique styling, and I'm surprised how thin it is given the GPU clock in particular. Seems the cooling patent might be getting its use in the retail system after all.

Agreed; things'll be able to be better compared after the July Xbox event. I'm hoping for some standout stuff there.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I felt like they were partly trying to fight off Nintendo, which is understandable considering how well the Switch is doing, especially in Japan.

Problem is, I felt like they were totally under-estimating Nintendo. It's like they said "let's fight Nintendo, let's make games for kids!" And called it a day..

I actually expected them to wow with at least one game graphically, but nothing did really. I think Killzone 4 at the start of last gen was quite an impressive moment, but there was nothing today with that kind of impact.

Well like some other people said there's aspect of diminishing returns, but I think if any game came closest to that today it was HZD2. Runner-up for R&C.

Not that any of them wowed me like the Shadow Fall trailer in 2013 though. Maybe we'll see something like that from Sony later on. Same for MS; in terms of non-gameplay they've already impressed me a ton with Project Mara and Hellblade 2, gameplay-wise would be BMI but that is technically not 1st-party.

Might explain the Nick Jr. game. Also Astro Bot, tho that seems like a very well-received game worth bringing back into some focus. There were definitely a few more family-friendly games here than I expected, tho in general I don't mind that too much if it's a good game like Astro Bot.

Might also explain the digital version: aiming that for Japan somehow. Doubt if it helps too much though, it's the same size as the disc version which is larger than I thought it'd be.
The digital edition is slimmer

captura-de-tela-2020-06-11-as-18.12.35.png

Yeah but it's not that much slimmer. Maybe shaves off 15% of the overall weight? In any case it's not the width that's striking (overall it's pretty skinny especially compared to XSX), but the height. It's the Wilt Chamberlain of game consoles ;)

Oh yeah, I fully agree. It looks like 10 to 7 cm shorter than my PC tower (NZXT S340 Elite)

I will say that sony will make a loss on the digital version and break even on the other one. 500 to 550 on the most expensive, 450 on the cheaper

What do you mean? PlayStation has always had a fair bit of more family friendly offerings on top of the “mature” games.

Maybe some of those games you and I feel like are missing are part of some other 3rd party announcements.

This is supposed to be a generational leap and yet nothing they showed blew my mind. And before you guys bring up horizon, that wasn’t in game nor was it specified if it was in engine

I'd argue R&C, Project Athia looked next gen. Demons Souls too after looking at the photos in another thread.

Was also not expecting a camera neither. Wasn't all of this Kinect stuff killed already???

Because the PlayStation camera isn't being pushed the same way Kinect was. I'm pretty sure the XSX will have the option to hook up a camera to it because plenty of people stream on consoles. Having a camera is useful for them.

Not to mention Sony still supports VR so the camera might be needed for that as well.

Something was off for me in Resident evil 8. From the time you see the character’s hands till the time the old man got grabbed through the ceiling looked janky as hell.
