Sony Buys EVO

Well that is definitely an...."interesting" purchase  Sony has seemingly been trying to establish their platform as the home for fighting games though and even doing regular MK11 & SCVI stream tournaments, so I figure it was about time they made a move like this.

In any case, this can probably only mean better things for EVO; I thought the Cannon brothers would've stepped up to field it in the face but they seem more behind-the-scenes types and probably don't want to deal with the baggage after the Mr.Wizard scandal broke out.

I'm curious how Sony are going to rebrand it after said scandal because that more or less wrecked EVO, but it'll be fun to see in any case.

I find the whole 'E Sports' thing total cringe, but if this deal could in some way help Street Fighter 6 to get made, then cool.

Capcom doesn't need EVO for Street Fighter 6, in fact they've been shifting their focus on their own league, Capcom Cup, of which EVO is just one event of many and not even the most "important" one anymore the way the CC Finals are.

One persistent issue with EVO was relatively low payouts, especially for certain games. Maybe Sony can help with that. I can't say to what extent EVO has been a particularly lucrative financial success, but it does hold the FGC together, it has that importance. If Sony are thinking about revamping it to make it more "mainstream" I hope that doesn't come at the expense of excessive censorship or cutting away the hype/grassroots/trash talk type of stuff, or mass-banning players over increasingly non-offensive conduct or (unproven) allegations. That'll just reduce the value of EVO even further, they have to walk a tight rope with this.

I also wonder if this affects Nintendo or Microsoft's investments into EVO going forward, like if they'll be less reluctant to do so. Nintendo's always looking for excuses to not support the Smash community financially, this could give them another bullet point to roll with. Microsoft doesn't have an in-house fighter that's new ATM but if they followup on Killer Instinct I can't see them skipping EVO so they would probably fund for their portion for that game I suppose.

Also this is going to make things a bit spicy now: Sony owning EVO and Microsoft owning Smash.GG, they definitely have some plans for these things going forward.

Not a good purchase for consoles warriors but I say it’s a really smart move considering how mainstream these tournaments will become in the future

That's highly debatable, and also begs the question: at what cost?

It's not like companies haven't been trying to commercialize the FGC before; there was a ton of that from 2017 to 2020 but now many sponsers have just straight-up left and quite a few pro players have turned to leveraging streaming as a major income source to compensate.
I just hope it doesn't come at the cost of dumbing the games down even further, or needlessly censoring fanservice (especially if that only goes one way), or banning players for relatively harmless stuff (or unproven accusations). If they can do that and maybe design more games that play into a team dynamic or structure tournaments as more team-based affairs I think FGC tournaments could blow up even further in the future and still stay true to the scene's roots.

I actually kind of find it surprising that, despite being probably the easiest to visually comprehend and understand from an complete outsider perspective, fighting games are nowhere near the top of esports popularity. You can take some random person, hell even your parents, and they could probably figure out what is going on in a Street Fighter match. It's two people punching and kicking each other, and there are big prominent bars of health that go down when fighters are hit. There is no fucking way that could happen for DOTA or even something like Counter Strike, yet those dwarf fighting games in popularity.

People had been asking them to buy a studio and this is what they buy? Jim Ryan has to be trolling lol

There is no Nintendo game in EVO this year from the PR.

Tekken 7
Street Fight V
Mortal Kombat 11
Guilty Gear

There are the games for EVO in August.
I acknowledged that in my post. Maybe I’m misremembering but didn’t Nintendo throw a fit about Smash being in a tournament? I assume it’s more Nintendo then Sony keeping Smash out.

Wow, what a perfect match for them.
Sony bailing a comp who historically have gay pedo scandals is nice, it's sure share a same CORE VALUES between them as they surely hate all about Japanese's sexy attractive oriental/white female char in gaming.
With their core focus on Mortal Kombat XI - the game who banned in Japan and several asia country as depicted been too violent while maintaining woke culture about their female char, it's sure a match made in heaven - very American.
Nice get Sony, keep it up.

I mean.. okay? I love fighting games, but I really don't care about EVO. I'll probably care even less now that the whole tournament will be one giant ad-roll.
I can't really figure out why this would be an important move for Sony, they already have and stranglehold on the niche FGC market. What's the benefit/upside from a consumer standpoint here?

i actually think this was a good pick up for Sony it makes sense since the majority of fighters are on their console minus killer instinct and Smash. I mean PC and PS4 are the dominant platforms for fighters. I’m a big fan of fighters so this acquisition works for me. I expect they will have a flagship exclusive game for this merger.

You guys are so dramatic :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Both Sony and MS have deals happening in the background. Who knows, Sony's strategy might not be to buy up studios. They could just in creasing the sizes of their studios to have multiple teams 🤷‍♂️ there's more than one way to skin a cat... but don't ask me, I don't know, I've never run a billion dollar corporation before.

Money spent on Evo isn't money that was going to go towards studio aquisitions lol

Yep, totally. It’s just easy to make fun of this, even for PlayStation fans. I don’t think Sony will make a big splash for increasing 1st party studios because I don’t think they need to. However, PS is my preferred console that carries non-Nintendo games. I want them to continue to push themselves and not be complacent.

TBH i can't tell if Sony is gonna do a good job, time will tell (i hope they will of course and i'm optimistic about it), but between Sony, MS, and Nintendo, Sony is easily the best pick though, so that's noice.

Agreed. Who would sit and watch somebody who is better than you at a game play said game for hours at a time?
Well i meant more the whole 'videogames are sport' thing, and the way the presenters and commentators act and talk at these events, like you are watching the Superbowl or something.
Total cheese and cringe.

How else would they relay commentary on what is occuring on screen? Like auctioneers? Like church pastors?

How else would they analysize the tactics and strategy being used by the competing teams? Like the discovery channel talks about monkeys having sex?

Yeap... maybe they are in talk.

Nintendo PR says they will support EVO but feels like future... maybe not in EVO Online this year? Next years if normal EVO happens?

SF6 was already being made, but it was delayed after Capcom didn't like the direction it was going under Yoshinori Ono.

I had the same opinion until I started watching Starcraft 2. I thought I was pretty decent at the game, but seeing these people play at that level....damn, I still don't know how it's humanly possible to play like that.

Yup.

This isnt the acquisition many were looking for, lol. Its a good move IMO. During 2020 these tournaments were put in the spotlight even more with everything shut down. I didnt even realize they were showing some on ESPN.

Oh dont get me wrong, i have nothing against the players. I watch plenty of speed runs and know just how good some people can be with dedication.

What a random purchase lol

If I had to guess what they'd buy, EVO would have never even been on my radar.

House Marque
Bluepoint Games
Kojima Productions

etc, those are easy ass guesses, but EVO? I want to see where this goes because in my humble opinion, Sony has very little skin in the game when it comes to actual competitive games, look at their titles, they just don't put out that many if any I'd really say are "EVO" type games, but shit maybe that is why they bought EVO in the first place.

To fill that gap. Could be a sign of who they might buy or what they might make in the future to even look to buy such a company.

Did they explain WHY lmfao?!!!

It’s not like they are brimming with multiplayer games! Are they buying Capcom lmfao?

I mean, this is potentially absolutely massive for the FGC. It was a big deal when ESPN hosted the SF5 finals a couple years back, that seems like it would be the norm when you have Sony budget and marketing behind it.

Also I enjoy how there are threads saying Sony is totally lost when it comes to multiplayer and esports (here is a good one), and here they are buying an esports company and the response is to ask why? lol
Thank you.

Also Jeff Grubb cracking jokes ....some ppl are so transparent.

Remeber before release, Sony did say their multiplaayer output will go up this gen compared to last. And i wont be against them funding SF6 again, as long as it comes to PC.

What is the point of this? Waste of money if you ask me. This money should've gone towards securing a steady flow of content stream for PlayStation years to come through the acquisitions of Kojima Productions, Bluepoint Studio, and expanding Japan Studio - not downsizing them.

Jim Ryan moves a toenail.

THEAP99: Fuckin' Jimbo! You're ruining PlayStation! Why isn't Sony buying x studios? Cross-gen this; bla-bla-bla!

Holy hell. Chill, mate. You have no idea what Sony has in the pipeline, nor are you privy to their grand schemes. Stop seething just because they're showing the slightest bit of vulnerability to Microsoft. There's not much wisdom a maligned user on a hardcore gaming forum knows that they themselves already don't.
