@MJackson the music switching from "calm" to "slapping battle theme" the moment you attack is a staple since IV. I would understand some people not liking it but come on, saying the music is awful just because of that is kind of a stretch.

I would even say this is my favorite soundtrack above any game I've played this year, probably even one of my favorites so far.

i didn't like it at first but it has grown on me. i like it.
Yeah same for me. He looks very cool in some of those special attack animations.

He is a fancy lad. Initially, I thought he was a woman.
Same here. Thought it was a girl at first, but after seeing the introduction, and how all male students are dressed the same, I came to the conclusion that it was a guy. They then tell you clearly. But honestly, this is bit a ridiculous.

By the way, this SMT game really throws you directly into the post apocalyptic world. Introduction phase was dealt with so quickly I barely remember the different characters.

Reached a level 22 boss after 8 hours or so. Despite having done all sidequests, fusioning appropriate demons and merging an appropriate essence, it is still a difficult battle. I will have to resort to grinding a bit (I am only level 20). Sucks a bit, but it happens sometimes. Maybe there is a better demon not far away (in a couple levels), but those I have are really pretty appropriate already.

Pretty standard SMT stuff so far, although much more forgiving (at least in Normal), and still no dungeon. Maybe after this boss, who knows.

There are some dungeons but don't expect a lot of them. The main dungeon, so to speak, is Tokio.

Cireza, If you use the item to avoid being damaged by a certain elemental attack you must be able to beat it.
Yeah those items are very useful. Good thing they are limited to having a max of three in your inventory, otherwise they would be too OP.

Which is the boss he's talking about? Maybe put the name in a spoiler so we can offer some help.

That sounds a bit disappointing. I will see by myself, thanks for the information.

I have a few of them, I haven't used them yet but it is indeed a good idea.

I am not particularly looking for help (I simply wanted to share some progress), but thanks, I appreciate the sentiment :)

Loving a lot about this game but the fact this is a switch exclusive for now is a real bummer.

I know people like to act like framerates don’t matter in a game like this but it definitely does. A better frame would make menus more snappy and more responsive. Navigating the world would feel more fluid.

Unless your a big fan of the series I’d say wait for the port on much better hardware. The switch does this game a great disservice

I’m not all graphic sensitive like most people on GAF, so there is no way in hell I’m gonna wait years to SMTV just for better graphics.

Seriously that so hyperbolic BS…..come on!

I’m the last person to argue graphics with. I play anything from Super Famicom to PS5 on my QLED smart TV. I took this with my smart phone while the game was docked. I’m not going to argue, but you can see where it shines and where it doesn’t. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad game at all. I quit Crysis on Switch because frankly it just looked awful. I’ve enjoyed plenty of Switch games docked. I mainly play in handheld mode. Astral Chain looked good, but I can’t deny the power of the Switch is with its library of games.

I'm not saying SMTV has super high tech graphics but calling 3DS game is hyperbolic BS. Astral Chain has really good visuals but it doesn't have same scale as SMTV when comes to its world design.

Here is screenshot of Monster Hunter World on PS4.

I guess Monster Hunter World looks like PS2 game!?

I brought up 3DS due to the games I’ve played on there like Monster Hunter 3 and 4, Zelda remakes, the Xenoblade Chronicles port, and mainly games that leave an open world impression on me. I brought up Astral Chain because I don’t want to come off as not enjoying a game on the Switch docked. That’s been my only Switch game I finished docked. The rest have been in handheld mode. Basically I want to finish SMTV and nothing has prevented that. However, I do feel like it suffers just a bit in graphics. That’s not saying much. I could say Dark Souls suffers on PS3, but I love that game. There have been times I quit a game due to the options I had available, aka Crysis on Switch. However, I think SMTV fits just fine or at least has for me. There are sometimes you just feel the game had to be optimized. We are talking about a console that has 4 GB of RAM.

Thats nothing new, SMT games were never graphical show piece, like compare Final Fantasy X that came out in 2001 to Nocturne that came out in 2003-4. Just like FROM, Atlus never makes high tech graphic games but both FROM and Atlus make it up for it with their art direction.

Because the resolution is so low, you actually can't see all the finer details on the demon models. In the end, the 2D pixel-art we still had in SMT IV looks much better and more detailed.

The game looks like a blurry HD PS2 game (or a 3DS game), overall, despite being "powered" by Unreal Engine. It has potential to look much better, but it will not materialize on Switch, obviously, as this engine is heavily restricted on such an under-powered hardware. And honestly, when we see what the engine is used for, I cannot see a single good reason to pick it up for a Switch exclusive. You could basically do the exact same thing on PS2 with a much more basic engine. It is basic traversal with limited geometry, and some enemies roaming around. Nothing stellar...

I agree in that art and especially gameplay cover more ground than graphics. I think that’s where a lot of gamers come from, at least those who have gamed for more than 20 years. We experienced the birth of each generation and what that generation could allow us to experience. The appreciation of gameplay over graphics has always stood the test of time because we simply play the game. The rapid increasing rise of technology and the performance of certain games and the way they look graphically is at an all time high. We reached that point where we got better graphics (3D) and the days of day dreaming about a big open world fantasy game came true. We have an industry that still uses that increase in graphics as a selling point. We have more and more outlets dedicated to FPS and graphical detail. The debate about graphics literally destroyed three remasters of three PS2 games. I myself am not focusing on comments made by other users about the way Elden Ring looks at the moment. I think the ultimate defense to this is gameplay. It’s a good game. I just don’t ever see the argument about how good it looks ever going away unfortunately. How much better will it be with the next entry? Who really cares, just enjoy the game. Let people argue about the way the geometry looks. I personally think Nintendo would be better off adding more power to their consoles instead of releasing them mid to late of the current console cycle.

It is not about having amazing graphics, it is about having something clean and smooth. PS2 graphics can be perfectly fine, but give me native resolution and 60fps. It won't be as eye-straining as SMT V currently is.

That being said, the game has a pretty fantastic sound design overall. When playing portable, earphones are a must.

Look people had same damn complain about Xenoblade 2's resolution and FPS and I put 300 hour in to it with no problem, I have been gaming long enough that graphical short coming doesn't bother me.

I played game with hight tech graphics like Horizon and Order 1886 and their high tech graphics didn't help me one bit to enjoy them.

No More Heroes III which had really rough visuals, I had absolute blast with the game.

You should be fine with the boss At your level. If you reorganize your Playable Character via essences to null the major attacks of the boss and build a team that can withstand those attacks while also doing critical/weak point hits to theleement they are weak to, you should be golden.

Even if you do things right though, the game does well in making you feel like you are barely scraping by.

Unless you are playing on Hard mode, in which case you *will* need to grind. A lot. Because Hard mode has no damn balancing.

This is exactly what I have done. I have been playing SMT since the first one on SNES... I wasn't really looking for advice, but thanks anyway ^^
I have beaten this boss already by now, and visited what looks like the first dungeon. It was a bit short sadly.

I managed to beat Strange Journey on impossible difficulty, I can beat SMT5 on hard mode.

Completely different balancing, in all honesty. Strange Journey had some care put into its difficulties. This didn’t. Kinda disappointing as everything else about the game is damn near perfect, but its clear there was no real playtesting for Hard mode.

Sorry! Lots of new folks joining in on the franchise with this entry, so better be safe than sorry.

There aren’t really any *dungeons* to speak of, at least to the point I am at. Seems that they are going a different direction with this title and having more open area “regions” Instead of traditional dungeons. But that could change. Still pretty early into the game.

Really!? you really consider fight with Mem Aleph balanced? Or Asura fight that keep spamming Asura Roga is balanced!?

Why do you find the difficulty Hard unbalanced? I'm about 40 hours in and having a blast so far. The starting hours were a bit slow tho, but not because of having to grind, but because the fights took a bit too longer to end.

Hey Angel is pretty good, I had him for my first boss fight because of his heal all buddies skill. Consider giving him a Grimoire from your items, that would help him level up and maybe take two hits instead of one.

I put Dia on the MC because he has to make an executive decision at the beginning of the round. I like having my actual healer use Hama and other status buffs. That way if I need to heal I can heal or use an item and then proceed to buff my party.

Compared to SMT 1, 2, and 4? Yes. I do. Far, far more balanced.

Most of the “difficulty” is simply trying to survive the incredibly increased crit chances, which requires grinding. Example, the first boss. Even when I built a party to basically null all fire damage, buff the shit out of us and debuff the boss, even using guarding. At level 19 I was still two shot by RNG Hydra basic attacks. This happened 7 attempts in a row. Doesn’t matter how much I buffed up, how much I put into vitality, how debuffed his attack was.

RNG is not “hard”. It’s unfair. You can’t plan around a one turn instant kill that happens completely randomly.

What’s sad is one of the first things we were taught how to do in computer science was generating RNG. Numerous ways to approach it, numerous ways to make it more random. These programmers seem to have only paid attention during the first hour of their CS education and only know how to work with extremes.

Still loving the game and I am determined to beat it on hard, but these devs and designers really are not the best in so many ways.

Why don't just using medicine or life stones?
I do, but I also run out of those. This way I can utilize MP if I run out of items. I’m also having to spend quite a bit of money on recovering my team’s HP/MP. My healer is my Hama caster in that area where you primarily see demons with a weakness towards Light. Some demons on my team need a bit of grinding before they can really take a hit. I also want to be able to heal my team without draining my healer’s MP.

edit: yeah I can see how it’s kinda stupid to do it like this because in a boss battle you’re either prepared or your not. Might as well have an item to fully heal than take a turn away from the MC to cast light healing magic. However, on the regular battlefield it’s not that bad.

I only notice this as a problem on Hard. Normal its a non-issue as you level up and can simply use strategy alone to win. Not basically requiring you to grind to survive a one shot death (Outside of a random Mudo or Hama insta kill).

4? Really? I never once grind in that game. I only find beginning little hard but once you pass Minotaur the game is much more manageable, but 4’s problem is stupid human party AI that uses wrong spell that gives the enemy Smirk status, that part I agree.

I was ready to be disappointed with the graphics Based on what I’ve read on Gaf. I’m pleasantly surprised that it’s a very good looking Switch game.
I was actually really impressed with the graphics, compared to other JRPGs on the platform. It does an awesome job of translating the game's art to in-game graphics. Obviously it can't compete with console or PC stuff on technical merit but I'll take it over Xenoblade Chronicles for damn sure.

That part in the intro where the girl gets surprised/laughs while the narrator pretty much goes on how human beings' time is up: brilliant.

Some of the sound gives me Akira vibes.

This has been seriously nerfed it seems. From my understanding, you can only be one hit killed by these if you are weak to it.

In previous games these spells did not do damage and would instantly kill you even if you weren't weak to it. I remember having to constantly choose to have resistance to these I Nocturne.

I’m so happy brought back this element from Apocalypse. Now Alice’s “Die For Me” skill is much more useful because it does actual damage.

Its a GOTY frontrunner for me so far. I hadnt played any of the previous games and was on the fence about getting this one because of the unfavourable Persona comparisons. Now I realise why people were pissed off with those comparisons being made in the first place. There are obviously similarities but the overall vibe is very different.
