My 70 year old dad loves it.It's mainly for show on forums and social media where Series S gets hate. People who spend all of their time talking about video games are the ones who have the problem with it. People who actually play video games don't have a problem with it.
I don't think anybody doubted that the cheaper console would sell more, pandemic or not. Especially when MS have made it digital only and have an incentive to produce and push that console more. They foresaw this happening and they said to everyone that XSS is their main seller year/s before launch.People gobbling up Series S's because that's the only thing they can find proves it was a great decision by MS to offer a cheaper alternative that's probably easier to produce and cheaper to ship.
I know they didn't forsee this happening but the pandemic, chip shortages and the volatile economic market combined with an attractive price point has really helped to push this over the top.
It's the enthusiasts who have a problem with it. It's the same with any market. People would buy any cheap and cheerful shit but go into enthusiast forums for that market and people aren't fans of it. I mean if I go into a motorhead forum I don't think there would be many fiat 500 fans but it doesn't mean they don't drive. The fiat 500 still sells though. It's mainly for show on forums and social media where Series S gets hate. One could argue without different parameters entirely we're ALREADY seeing incremental upgrades. The biggest upgrade, the SSD, is snugly inserted into the Series S.I don't think anybody doubted that the cheaper console would sell more pandemic or not. Especially when MS have made it digital only and have an incentive to produce and push that console more. They foresaw this happening and they said to everyone that XSS is their main seller year/s before launch.
I remember I took issue with it because if this was successful it would mean others do the same with "next gen" being barely any different in power to the previous and the more powerful ones being relegated to side consoles with small install bases/support.
Dude, the Series S has no disc drive for games or movies. Unless I've misunderstood what you're trying to say.Side note, I think the most likely use of the S as a “companion console” is with a PS5. I am guessing people still have DVDs/BluRays, and neither the Switch nor PS5D can play them. And those who have the X don’t need an S. Probably.
I think what the poster is saying that the XSS is a good companion with the PS5 (not DE) since the PS5 could be the DVD/Blu Ray player. That's if you need a player.Dude, the Series S has no disc drive for games or movies. Unless I've misunderstood what you're trying to say.
You're right but the reason is the same. We are seeing games that are barely even next gen because there is no incentive for devs. no install base for a powerful console means games developed for low spec machines and minimal upgrades for the low install base more powerful ones. We are already seeing this with crossgen and "PS5/XSX" games. Now imagine when the majority next gen consoles which are selling are low spec too. How much support for truly mind blowing next gen engines would there be for the low install base? What incentive would there be to create an engine tailored to the small subset of people who own them? One could argue without different parameters entirely we're ALREADY seeing incremental upgrades. The biggest upgrade, the SSD, is snugly inserted into the Series S.
There was plenty of people here predicting the XSS would be discontinued and would not sell at all.I don't think anybody doubted that the cheaper console would sell more, pandemic or not. That is a great anecdote. Series S does make a lot of sense IMO.My 70 year old dad loves it.
Before he bought his he asked... "does it play FS2020". I said yes. That's all that mattered to him. And it does play really well. One of the most demanding games right now plays great on a £250 console.
I think that was more wishful thinking on their end then. There was plenty of people here predicting the XSS would be discontinued and would not sell at all.
When you talk about barely any difference in power are you comparing the XSS to the X1S, its predecessor? There are significant power differences between those two systems.
Also the RTX 3090 is largely a niche GPU but games still take advantage of its power. I'd wager more people have GPUs that can't support raytracing than can yet that hasn't stopped developers from implementing that feature. There will always be software that pushes high end GPUs. That's why scaling exists so people can crank the settings.

I honestly can't even begin to imagine having such a large TV and then hooking up a 1080p system to it.I hooked the new XSS up with a 65" TV in the den. Installed my two favorite games this gen - MSFS, FH5. This thing rocks.

What if it's a 1080p screen? They exist.I honestly can't even begin to imagine having such a large TV and then hooking up a 1080p system to it.
We've already had it. It's only succeeding because Sony can't produce enough PS5s to bury it, so it's thrown all their projections off.I remember when NEOGAF proclaimed that the Series S would sit on shelves due to it being underpowered. What is the new narrative now?

Do we even have games that are exclusive 4k? most games are tailored for 1080p. your 4k console wont do anything, if the game is upscaled to 4k. you need native 4k games to feel that 4k experience. or else, you are stuck with upscaled 4k.I honestly can't even begin to imagine having such a large TV and then hooking up a 1080p system to it.
ok. but is it unavailable? the fact it is on shelves, means more people will buy it.I mean its still iterally sitting on shelves, i can go buy one right now

what are you talking about ? forza 5 came just out...92 metacritic ....11 millions players is a complete success every point of view , in July flight sim ..90 metacritic , psychonauts 2 (that there isn't for PS5) ..87 mc....and Halo infinite that the beta has just come out and the full game will be out shortly is already on track to be the best halo ever. All these means shit, if you don't have anything right now. And none of those studio, aside of the core one has anything to show for MS. Even Psychonauts 2 was multiplat.
2022 is their return from these studios.
Ms didn't even bother giving their IP to 2nd party, like Sony did with spiderman, before they bought Insomniac, or returnal, demon soul remake.
Industry is ruthless. Without gamepass, MS would have lost the momentum.
Do you understand what core studio means?what are you talking about ? forza 5 came just out...92 metacritic ....11 millions players is a complete success every point of view , in July flight sim ..90 metacritic , psychonauts 2 (that there isn't for PS5) ..87 mc....and Halo infinite that the beta has just come out and the full game will be out shortly is already on track to be the best halo ever.
netflix, hulu, amazon prime, disney plus.Dude, the Series S has no disc drive for games or movies. Unless I've misunderstood what you're trying to say.
Is there a reason you didn't mention the X1S? Just because you refused to acknowledge its existence doesn't mean it isn't the true predecessor. You might not know this but the X1S sold more than the X1X so the only wishful thinking is that developers will start making games with maximum raytracing effects ignoring large segments of potential customers. That would make no business sense seeing how most people's gaming hardware cannot run the effect at all.I think that was more wishful thinking on their end then.
That's right, yeah. I'm talking about XSS to previous gen. Especially to X1X or PS4 Pro. When compared to XSX and PS5/PS5DE the increment for XSS is extremely lackluster.
The RTX 3090 doesn't get games developed for a RTX 3090. It runs games at crazy resolutions and framerates but no developer is tailoring a mindblowing game/engine that runs on an RTX 3090 at 60fps/1440p. It gets games that can run and were developed for lower spec machines. It has raytracing support in some games like its predecessor GPUs but those are both rare and usually minor implementations of raytracing like reflections and shadows mostly. Not engines/games tailored to raytracing. Hopefully this changes with newer engines as current gen (or maybe next gen) builds a sizeable install base. Anyway I think I've taken this way off topic now.
You're right but the reason is the same. We are seeing games that are barely even next gen because there is no incentive for devs. no install base for a powerful console means games developed for low spec machines and minimal upgrades for the low install base more powerful ones. There is a very interesting thread from the past that goes into that here
Xbox users don't give a great shit about the things you just said. My point was that the production from first party studios this whole gen will be higher from Ms studios just and only because they have 23 studios (with multiple sub studios inside those) than the 14 Playstation have .Do you understand what core studio means?
What you listed is from core studio. Psychonauts 2 was kickstart. All ms did was fund a kickstart game. the game is available on ps5 through BC, through ps4.
Until MS releases an actual game from the studios they bought, which doesnt involve kickstart, or timed exclusive on other console, they wont see any game from them, until 2022 summer. so my point stands.
PC has something those consoles wont get for a while. Full mod support. Currently both console offer limited modding.Don't forget PC though. That will always be a catalyst for pushing the newest technologies and provide a base for upper tier consoles to draw inspiration from.
Everything about this comment is wrong. There are several native 4k games, games that are "upscaled" using differend rendering method are not "tailored for 1080p and saying that a "4k console won't do anything if the game is upscaled to 4k" is so hilariously wrong that I don't even know where to start with you.Do we even have games that are exclusive 4k? most games are tailored for 1080p. your 4k console wont do anything, if the game is upscaled to 4k. you need native 4k games to feel that 4k experience. or else, you are stuck with upscaled 4k.
It's a 4K screen. The XSS recognized it as 4K, and set it us as 4K.
November 10, 2020 is the launch of xbox series consoles and your 1st acclaim game released on August 25, 2021. The 14 PlayStation studios had launch games day1 with console, and those games were critically acclaimed too.Xbox users don't give a great shit about the things you just said. My point was that the production from first party studios this gen will be higher from Ms studios just and only because they are 23 studios (with multiple sub studios inside those) than the 14 Playstation have .
You trying to spin this with "core studios" "compatibility" ecc ecc...
Microsoft managed to launch multiple critically acclaimed games this year and all of them are nicely on game pass. Next month there will be another bug hitter
It technically does output at 4k, most games don't but there is at least one that does. Ori is 4k60 on the series s.But it doesn't actually output at 4k.
You think GoW is coming out in Summer 2022?After halo, people will have to wait until summer for redfall, while playstation would have god of war, and horizon forbidden west.
Summer would be ideal for them. As long as they dont release close to starfield. Who ever is releasing a game close to that month, is on life support. While starfield might not be on playstation system, the amount of headline it will get, will disrupt any new marketing games. It technically does output at 4k, most games don't but there is at least one that does. Ori is 4k60 on the series s.
You think GoW is coming out in Summer 2022?
In terms of the number of first party games, I think you will see a similar about next year especially if you include the 1.0 release of Grounded.
again what the fuck you talking aboutNovember 10, 2020 is the launch of xbox series consoles and your 1st acclaim game released on August 25, 2021. The 14 PlayStation studios had launch games day1 with console, and those games were critically acclaimed too.
You can have as many studio as you want to, but if you dont have anything to show off your console with, people wont wait for your games to arrive. People want something to play with their new console. MS got bailed out by bethesda purchase, gamepass, and those day1 gamepass games.
After halo, people will have to wait until summer for redfall, while playstation would have god of war, and horizon forbidden west. The biggest game for xbox is starfield, and that is November 11, 2022.
This is the state of the 23 studios. gamepass will still bailout MS, from the like of stalker 2, and other day1 gamepass games. While the other console will enjoy their 14 studio 1st party games on time delivery, and not counting timed exclusive and 2nd party games in the future.
MS isnt seeing any of these studio games soon.
The Series S absolutely outputs at 4k if you connect with a 4k display. There are even some games that actually render at native 4k like The Touryst and Ori.But it doesn't actually output at 4k.
I said previous gen consoles (this includes the X1S and PS4 obviously) and used the word "especially" for the X1X and PS4 Pro. Not sure why I had to mention it by name to acknowledge its existence. Is there a reason you didn't mention the X1S? Just because you refused to acknowledge its existence doesn't mean it isn't the true predecessor.
This is exactly my point though. I know full well that the X1S outsold the X1X. What you are saying is exactly what I'm saying. If the majority of people's gaming hardware cannot support some new amazing engine/game then that engine/game isn't financially viable and devs would not spend time pursuing it. If next gen all the major players decides to make a cheap £150 console with a weak GPU but still with some benefit from previous gen the mass market will still likely adopt it and the developers would follow the install base. We already have this problem with mobile. That issue gave birth to the Diablo "do you guys not have phones" meme. You might not know this but the X1S sold more than the X1X so the only wishful thinking is that developers will start making games with maximum raytracing effects ignoring large segments of potential customers. That would make no business sense seeing how most people's gaming hardware cannot run the effect at all.
again what the fuck you talking about
Xbox series x is constantly and 100% sold out. We being in a thread about how much series s is selling more than other next gen consoles......gamepass skyrocketing .....PC users are in heaven with Microsoft releases on steam. those 23 studios is basically 100% sure that will release more games than competition this gen.
If you think that 2022 will have just red Fall good luck with this dream. I'll save your post for the crows lol
we are on 2nd year on this gen. And only halo, forza are on xbox. Psychonauts 2 is kickstart. The only 1st party game that is announced is redfall on summer, and starfield on nov 2022.My point was that the production from first party studios this whole gen will be higher from Ms studios just and only because they have 23 studios
The Series S absolutely outputs at 4k if you connect with a 4k display. There are even some games that actually render at native 4k like The Touryst and Ori.
Don't take this personally but it's getting very tiresome to see these types of comments. The Series S is perfectly capable of outputting at 4k resolution and it's more than capable of rendering simpler games at 4k. It's no powerhouse but this kind of bullcrap needs to stop.
If devs wasted their time with that useless xbox one console, I dont see them dropping the xss. Xss can run those games. People play flight sim on that console. There isnt any game that is stronger than flight sim. Only game that is close is cyberpunk 2077, which the xss can run it fine.I said previous gen consoles (this includes the X1S and PS4 obviously) and used the word "especially" for the X1X and PS4 Pro. Not sure why I had to mention it by name to acknowledge its existence.

I'm sorry and I say this with all due respect, but this is just a straigth up misrepresentation of what the system offers. Saying that the system renders at 4k because it can run a few games at 4k is misleading. The total amount of games that run at 4k is 6 and half of those are simple indie games. Not even the dashboard runs at 4k. There's a decent amount that runs at 1440p and the overwhelming majority of games run at 1080p.The Series S absolutely outputs at 4k if you connect with a 4k display. There are even some games that actually render at native 4k like The Touryst and Ori.

I don't see devs dropping the XSS at all. The exact opposite. The way you see devs "wasting their time on the useless Xbox One console" they will do the same on XSS and waste less of their time on XSX especially if it becomes the main seller for xbox. The Xbox One wasn't even that bad compared to the competition and ran pretty much everything with even less differences to PS4, whereas the XSS is much worse than the PS5 and XSX. I'm not concerned for the XSS itself. I'm not concerned about anything really. Just more pointing out where I think the market is going (cheaper/weaker consoles) and not being particularly happy about what that might mean.If devs wasted their time with that useless xbox one console, I dont see them dropping the xss. Xss can run those games. People play flight sim on that console. There isnt any game that is stronger than flight sim. Only game that is close is cyberpunk 2077, which the xss can run it fine.
Even that 2013 ps4 was able to run last of us 2, and ghost of tsushima.
Your concern for xss at this point is nothing.
Only if your game or engine is CPU bound. FS2020 is heavily CPU bound. Core gameplay usually is more RAM which XSS is limited on too. So it all depends on your engine and when you started developing your game what you targeted. The thing that matters the most is the CPU. That will be doing all the major heavy lifting when it comes to core gameplay. The CPU this generation is much better than last generation it's not even close and that's why we are seeing way more 60fps titles this generation. Developers aren't going to design a game around a GPU exclusively.
It still has the capability even if it's not going to for major 3d titles. There's a misconception/lie that is often thrown around online that the system is hard locked to output at 1440p max, no matter what. That's not the case as select titles do run at 4k or above 1440p, which is what was originally being pointed out.I'm sorry and I say this with all due respect, but this is just a straigth up misrepresentation of what the system offers. Saying that the system renders at 4k because it can run a few games at 4k is misleading. The total amount of games that run at 4k is 6 and half of those are simple indie games.
