Phil Spencer hints at future Xbox Game Pass or console price increases at WSJ Live

I don't know why anyone thought otherwise, between the money they've been dumping into Game Pass & what we've seen happen with the video streaming services prices (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+ most recently, etc.) this was a given

GamePass is clearly in it's growth/loss leader phase just to build an audience before they aim to start making money with it

It should of increased already to be honest. I pay £7.99 a month for PC gamepass, that includes EA PLay, and now a bunch of Ubisoft games.
Compared to Ubisoft Plus which is £12.99 for around 100 Ubisoft games.

Its ridiculous the price of Gamepass really but i suppose you have to offer a great price to get people into the eco system. Still i will be surprised if it rises more than something like 3 or 4 pounds, which i will be more than happy to pay.

“It’s almost like, its TOO good of a deal, please let us pay more for such a good service”

Try telling that to the hordes that trolled the PS threads when Sony announced increase of PS5 consoles or when Sony announced increase from $60 to $70 games.

What were terms thrown around?
'Greedy Sony'
'Arrogant PS is back'
There must be a few more I'm sure.
Sony been swindling loyal customer's with the software increase for years now. The console increase was forced on them by a recession. I'm not sure Microsoft will follow suit in that regard but then they can afford to lose more than Sony. Gamepass was always going to increase in price so I'm not sure who thought otherwise 🤔

Would have paid £299 for my Series S, raising prices on existing hardware is a massive L though. They should keep it at £249 and only increase with a revised model. More than £10.99 for Game Pass Ultimate is a hard sell for me. They need to roll Gold in to the £7.99 sub or keep the Gold 1:1 conversion around for ever.

£4 a month would be an absolutely appalling increase.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
For this gen it won't be unusual. In comparison to every other gen it is.
The console prices alone this gen is unusual.

I remember buying a xbox one at launch for 330 usd in my country.

An series x costs 524 usd. That's an insane price increase.

Even worse for the PS5. Ps4 was about 330 usd as well, but the PS5 gets sold for 800 usd when it's in stock its insane.

Regarding MS and console price increases, I laugh a little at that because MS never tries to make a $1 on the hardware itself. Regardless of what the price increased to you know they are going to firesale those suckers come the holidays anyway. LOL

GP is an interesting one. That could go a couple different ways. Do they leave the pricing as it stands and try to work on getting a higher percentage of users to pay that price or do they raise the price and continue with the onboarding promos? Maybe they discontinue the gold conversion (other than just a 1:1 ratio for the dollars you have prepaid) and introduce a 12 month card/billing cycle to encourage long-term buy-in (similar to what Sony is doing with PS+).

You say GP price was always going to increase yet the price of games, which have been $60 for like 20 years was not?
And it's just Sony swindling the customer? Come on now.....

You lot creaming yourselves over POSSIBLE price hikes (something that was always going to happen anyway). 'loilz remember when 'x' said 17 years ago 'this', now they are doing the same lolz!!!'.
Its just cinstant insecurity.
Or it's funny. Especially coming from people like "I wish i could pay more for this" you and "want a free handy for all you've done Phil?"

Curious how you came to this conclusion. I never post in threads related to platforms I don't own. Meanwhile you guys drove into this thread like it's festival time. Somehow me giving opinions regarding Xbox on a Xbox thread, leads you to project insecurities onto me.
Hmmm....
Some people are celebrating too early, already dreaming of how everyone will leave Xbox and MS will charge whatever they are dreaming of.
For all we know this may even be about the consoles.
That's not an opinion on Xbox, and nobody in this thread said such a thing, but you.

Bruh, you responded to someone who made shit up in his head.

Not sure why everyone is jumping to conclusions that it’s about a Gamepass price increase. The most likely thing for a price increase would be games to the $70 mark.

Also, this is probably the first time Phil’s confirmed that Gamepass is profitable. Not surprisingly, few are engaging on the post from FalsettoVibe FalsettoVibe

Regardless of things like inflation, possible recession in the economy... the price of GPass was going to go up and it was just a question of when.

Even more so when more AAA first party releases begin to arrive and the current price of GPass began to be absurdly low for what was offered.

My bet is that the price increase will apply to GPass and games at $70. Among other things because if you acquire Activision your games will have to adjust to that price.

I doubt that the price increase will affect the console. Even more so when XSS begins to be seen going down and not the other way around.

Man the warring in here is palpable. I've been saying inflation, supply issues and recession for roughly a year or more now. I suspect 2023-24 is going to be very difficult for many industries and gaming will be no different. I expect many devs to fold or be sold off to avoid going under. I'm neutral in this fight, the price of GP alone has been a thorn in some of my friends' sides for a while. Those same guys aren't going to be with me day 1 for CoD mp which is a shame too. The fanboying in here, the tit-for-tat quick to post a thread knocking the other side is laughable. This isn't a win or own for anybody. This is a bad sign the world over. And when China finally makes that move for Taiwan, heh, that'll be a disruption for the ages.

I've been saying that the average consumer will start to limit their spending and buy with prejudice. I think cheap options, family plans and waiting for deep sales and discounts will be the norm, with a heavy influx for GaaS titles and a few full-priced games that have long legs(CoD). Sadly I see this being too much for SP and indie games who will flock to sub-services to stay solvent. In truth the global issues haven't even begun to hit their stride yet. With nations rationing heating supplies, fuel going up vidya gaems are going to be seen as a luxury.

Again i'm being realistic. Do you honestly think that i thought i would be paying £7.99 for Gamepass for the rest of history?.
Literally, no one has said anyone was going to drop ms because of a price hike though. Which is what the other guy was saying that you were agreeing with.

I dont care if anyone drops Xbox or not. Look Hawking said it better than me, what i meant by my Gamepass comments and price. Its you lot what jumped on me 'lolz you want yto pay more', 'lolz yuo want a to give Phil a handjob', and other fanboy drivel.

I have said numerous times over the past couple of year that i expect Gamepass prices to go up, even as high as £20+ in the future.
