Microsoft really doesnt give a shit about pushing the medium forward. Their approach to winning the gen will reduce the quality of GAMES

Is Matt Damon right?

Gears and Halo can’t even go toe to toe with games like Grounded and Sea of Thieves. Never mind Forza and whatever id Software and Bethesda Game Studios release. In 2022 they are very small franchises.

I wouldn't go as far as defining them as "small franchises", primarily due to their legacies (they are now more akin to sleeping giants, both are just one significant high quality reboot away from being sprung back in the spotlight).

However on the basis of where those franchises are in the overall landscape today you are correct. They should be embarrassed that stuff like Sea of Thieves and Grounded now have more sticking power than their once tentpole franchises.

OP says you are stupid if you own an Xbox, and a fool for not knowing you are stupid.
You have no games to play.
Having a console for people not having alot of money is stupid, and even if you have alot of money, you are stupid for buying a xbox series x instead of PS5 because you still have no games to play.

Also he's trying to win the Phil Spencer award.

Seeing that damn Series S ad just now just ... lol

They tried the "release good games, sell consoles" approach Sony and Nintendo have been successful at for years, and it didn't win them the gen. So what did they do? They switched their entire focus to "services" and "value". Not games. Services.

They don't give a damn about advancing the medium we love. That ship seems to have sailed. It does not seem important to them anymore.

Poor studio management, entire calendar years without first party releases. Not investing in new IP, same promises every year, telling us to wait.

They make stupid fucking decisions:
  • Money hatting The Mid instead Silent Hill 2 (same devs).
  • Turning down Spider-Man as an exclusive on their platform.
  • Spending 100 million dollars on 1 year of Tomb Raider exclusivity. Sony bought Insomniac for 200 million. Be smarter.
They show up to a gameshow with 103 million viewers with a Gamepass Ad. Not a single update on a single game. Some of these games were announced in 2019.

They push the Series S (an underpowered budget console that, despite whatever Kool-Aid some Indie Studio head tells you to drink, will be responsible for limiting the potential of multiplat games for an entire generation) more than the Series X.

Phil's strategy is to literally buy out publishers, then put their most popular games on every. single. platform. From literal goddamn TV apps, to mobile, to weak machines like the Nintendo Switch.

If it was up to MS, they would buy Take 2, then require all GTA games to release on the Switch moving forward- Scaled down and downgraded to hell. Ambition and fidelity across all platforms would have to be limited. But hey, it sells, and gives gamers "options". Who fucking cares. Make a mindblowing product and sell it to its target audience. If you need to reach a more casual, younger audience... then invest in NEW IP.

Alright, Gamepass.

I'm not even going to mention much about this abomination. I'm going to let Matt Damon do the talking. Watch this clip.

Theres a cost for everything. You have to be blind or naive to not see the parallels between what is happening in Hollywood and what will happen with Gamepass.

Just replace those DVD's with games (and people no longer buying them because of Gamepass) and replace those types of movies he's referring to with: Quality AAA titles, new AAA IP, experimental AAA titles, etc. If the "Netflix of Games" becomes a reality, then studios will NOT see the need to, or be brave enough to green light certain games. Point blank. You are already seeing gamers complain about paying $70 for games. It will get worse as the gamepass model contiunes to grow. You can kiss your Hollywood Blockbuster AAA style games goodbye.

It seems Microsoft, especially as of late, has switched their focus entirely. What was once "make great games, sell them, invest in new IP to reach new audiences" approach is now a "make every single game playable everywhere, for free, regardless of quality."

This approach will hold the medium back. It will stagnant creativity, growth. Tech won't stop advancing, but NO ONE will be utilizing said tech to its full potential. Advancements in games will be hard to notice, devs will have to scale back their visions - All to make kids, casual gamers who keep FIFA, Madden and COD #1 for all of eternity happy while you and I play second fiddle and get fed sloppy seconds.

Phil needs to go.
You need to go with this hot garbage thread

If you want something really interesting and cutting edge in gaming buy the PSVR2 in February. VR is where the last frontier of true innovation is, for now at least.

All the rest is just the same thing repackaged with small improvements, if you are lucky. I just finished God of War Ragnarok. Very good, but very similar. Forza Horizon 5 is very good as well, but almost the same as 4 and 3 before. The new Zelda will be the same thing.

The OP is right even though he went the dramatic route. Xbox has been pretty shit since Phil has taken over as far as game output has been. I'm not sure why he get so much praise from Xbox fans.

What time is it?
They should be embarrassed that stuff like Sea of Thieves and Grounded now have more sticking power than their once tentpole franchises.

When they killed PGR and let Activision get their clutches into Bizarre Creations, I traveled back in time to ancient Egypt, became a Pharaoh, and put a curse on Phil Spencer. Phil found out, unfortunately. Why do you think the new enemies in Gears are robots? But even former Playground Games and gobbling up ActiBlizzard can't break the curse. He offered me a ten year deal to lift the curse but I said no. Here is footage of our latest negotiations.

Actually, it is the arrival of Sony that has reduced the quality of video-games. They have paved the way to what games are today, not Microsoft.

They have also demonstrated how to win, which basically means buying your place in the market. Back then, in 1995, they were the richest company doing video-games. But now, they are facing a much richer company, willing to spend much more than they can afford. The roles have been inverted.

All three manufacturers are super disappointing nowadays. Nothing is going to improve. Long live third parties !

I do agree with most of what you're saying but your first statement is a big stretch, especially considering the insane quality of the game libraries of PS, PS2 and PSP.
They also took so many risks and tried many different things before the eight gen, now they're just messing around with VR and that's it.

And The Elder Scrolls 6 likely won’t release this generation or will arrive so late that it’s better to get the next gen port. And Sony has contracts in place for CoD that will last the whole generation.
🤷‍♂️

Could’ve bought Moon Studios, Asobo, Neon Giant, Ebb, Bloober, Splash Damage, Crystal Dynamics and helped funding some exclusives by Platinum, Team Ninja, Capcom, FROM etc for a fraction of that money. Phil just got awarded for being a great business man or whatever. I really don’t see why.

Well, none of these studios had a AAA release in 2022. So Yeah, they could have bought all those studios and paid for exclusives. And we’d still have the exact same threads wailing about xbox having no games and ‘studio mismanagement’ rumors. You’d still have Mibu regurgitating the same threads whining about GoW and Spiderman…and Represent above declaring Gamepass the devil spawn.

starfield will most likely be a success and be one of the most played games of all time just like skyrim and if redfall will have the level design and environmental storytelling that they are knowed for plus a good story , thats 2 great games coming next year for xbox

but even if those 2 games will be heavy hitters and have 90+ metacritic score people will still say that they dont have games

even if in 2024 we will get hellblade 2 , avowed , indiana jones , forza motorsport , perfect dark people will still say that they dont have games

even if in 2025 we will get fable , zenimax new mmo , contraband , compulsion games new 3rd person action game people will still say they dont have games

even if in 2026 we will get gears 6 , new arkane game , IOI project dragon , state of decay 3 , inxile new game people will still say they dont have games

I full agree with your statement, look what happened to Rare when Microsoft bought them, they went from being a 2nd party studio capable if making games either on the same level as Nintendo or better to a has been who nobody talks about, even Phil's interview just shows that Microsoft have no vision in the gaming industry watch and listen to the whole interview to see what I mean

I definitely agree with the first part but I think their goal isn't exactly to lower game quality but to make everything a subscription and that will indirectly lead to lower quality games as a byproduct.

Microsoft's clear message is to buy up all of the relevant developers and then add all of their IPs their subscription service. Choking out the competition until they have monopolistic control over this industry (like Windows). Then sit back and watch the money roll it.

Phill has already said, even after putting the bid in for ABK, that they aren't don't with acquisitions. If the regulators allow this sale or not, i guarantee MS will go after Japanese developers and their IPs.

Japan does not allow the acquisition of Japanese companies by a foreign company, its against Japanese trade law, they can only do mergers

VG247 have God Of War as their game of the year and praised Sony for pushing the medium forward.

"It’s an astounding piece of work, and it really pushes the boundaries of what video games are capable of – here they are, resurrecting the artistic sensibilities of a long deceased society in order to let us walk in their shoes. To do this via their art, not ours (as is the case with something like Assassin’s Creed) and with conversation and contemplation, not violence (as is the case with something like Assassin’s Creed) is a testament to how far this medium has come, and also – for good or ill – a showcase of what’s possible with a subscription model. As Josh Sawyer himself said, this game simply wouldn’t exist without Game Pass, which makes it so much easier for studios to take risks on passion projects like Pentiment, which have the potential to massively pay off"

More nails in the coffin for Microsoft's approach. OP, sadly, proven to be completely sane.

These forums are becoming unbearable. I get that people don't like Xbox and gamepas.... But the amount of pure hatred for them is really weird.

Yeah it's really weird to see getting back at the time where you are allowed to make a troll thread about xbox and it doesn't get locked.

At some point people (and hopefully them as a business) will realise all people care about is games, and high quality ones at that.

Oh stop with this stupid nonsense it's getting embarrassing.

Who are you talking to? What are the people?

Those who already bought an Xbox? Or the fanboys putting the fuel to the fire using their stupid exclusives in the console war?

The people crying in here would never buy an Xbox no matter how good exclusives they have.

Hell if god of war became exclusive on xbox people would be like "damn, so sad to see this franchise has become so bad".

PlayStation dominate because of the brand. Kids grew up with the first generation and sticks with it. Not because of their exclusives.

I know it's hard to swallow for SonyGaf in its hive mind.

The only one crying they care alot are edgy fanboys who would never buy an Xbox to begin with

Fuck imagine, if people had heard of Spider Man previously he could have been a hidden Character in Tony Hawk, or had a huflgely successful ps1/N64 run even an Ultimate Spider Man game could have been made.

That would have been so cool.
Why do people love to circle jerk and take what other people said out of context to drag the conversation down to a level where they can respond to a statement after its misrepresented? Im sure theres a name for that. Debating ethics are thrown out the window on GAF.

Spiderman ps4 is the best game of the franchise, thats an objective fact. Nobody was asking for Spiderman games before 2018, everybody was on Batmans nuts. Microsoft even tuned down Spiderman, lol. Yes, they did popularize him, on films and games in recent years.

There is a bunch of annoying kids, who whine too much here.
Each company does their stuff different.
Sony doesn't have a good multiplayer game. MS doesn't have stellar games, and Nintendo stuck on old hardware.

No company is perfect.

people will still say that they dont have games
Same story, different year.
It's like people don't understand that this is a video game, not a movie industry.
If you don't like their output, simply ignore them, and do your thing. No need to whine about it in the internet too much. It won't change anything.

They seem to put some money into flight sim, racing (more than one game), strategy, multiplayer, and survival.

Sony makes that same sony game +1 special mechanic to go with it each time. Returnal felt diiffernt tho

Mmh… upset they lead in that too ;)?
Not upset at all, just made a point related to the thread.

Discussing main topic, I think it is games like MS Fligh Sim that re pushing the medium forward from tech perspective, games like starfield will bring us new level of scale to AAA games, expect Forza to bring new level of sim experience to console gaming, we have got gems like pentiment that are breath of fresh air as well even though are not breaking any grounds. Meanwhile competition is focused on releasing remasters, remakes and sequels. I see MS more open to experimenting with new ideas, IPs, tech, while I see Sony as being focused on manufacturing more games following their winning format/formula but then what next? They already are releasing some games that’s honestly should be DLCs. Interestingly Sony seems to be separating multiplayer to their games as separate titles - that’s def pushing games medium forwards and not chasing revenues.

Im just saying. If Sony and Nintendo are so perfect to you. Why don’t you just support them and ignore Microsoft. You wrote a book to accomplish nothing.

Microsoft is moving to the beat of their own drum and I’m happy.

An industry where everyone is doing the same shit is so fucking boring. I hope MS continues to prioritize multiplayer experiences (- medium they have mostly been pushing). Sony can continue their movies games (a medium they have been pushing.) While Nintendo keep making family, couch co-op experiences (their bread and butter). Stop asking one company to be like the other, it doesn’t work.

Edit: added half of a damn parentheses.

There is a reason they are in the shadow of Sony and nintendo. There's no amount of worcest or money that can fix that. And that is something Microsoft does have is a lot of money to throw around which they have done so. Let them have their hardware sales and the piece of the pie but you're still here with this atmosphere that hasn't changed hardly but maybe in the late 2000's where they kind of held their own.

They're basically just an outlet for Game pass for me which I should actually disable because I haven't really been using it that much up until probably February where I will probably resubscribe.

god of war doesnt do anything to push the medium forward

it doesnt have the best combat - elden ring , devil may cry have way better combat , even metal gear rising a game from 2013 has better combat

it doesnt have the best level design - a game like dishonored , deus ex have better level design , thief a game that is 20 years old has better level design

it doesnt have the best story - just because it has emotional father son moments doesnt make it an amazing story

it doesnt have the best graphics either - cyberpunk or red dead redemption with everything maxed out looks better

so tell me in what way is it pushing the medium forward ?

ive read the entire post dont worry , so ur saying that because of gamepass all xbox games will be small games like pentiment ? and games like pentiment are posible only because of gamepass ? devs have been making games like these since like forever not only since gamepass

just looks at inside , how much success it had , a small 4 hour game but filled with interesting puzzles and mystery

Don't tell him that the branching story crap in 2018's Detriot: Become human is like a higher budget Pentiment. Wouldn't want to spoil his narrative.

Haven't played Detroit (no interest in David Cage game), but Pentiment is doing new, good stuff narrative wise.

For one, it's set over 25 years in game, that leads to natural story/ character development.

Only David Cage game I have played is Heavy Rain that had a ton of transparent, obvious character development like playing with Shawn before killing him etc.

Can't compare them really.

But that's true for every market, not just Japan.

Console market is growing everywhere while it's shrinking in Japan.

Can you name Fortnite / Fifa equivalent games in Japan that casual crowd buys console for? There isn't any. Cause big companies didn't made any.

Now they throw billions to make gamepass sustainable & if they don't win FTC case this maybe their end on gaming hardware department.

Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Splatoon.

The japanese console/portable market saw a resurgence thanks to the Switch. Yes, mobile gaming is bigger but that applies to all major markets.
