Hogwarts Legacy |OT| The Prisoners of AskforBan

I am completely stumped by these door puzzles...you reveal a clue on them, and there are 2 rotating panels that you have to select the right two on before opening the door. The first one I got by trial and error, but I want to understand how I'm supposed to do this.
You might want to check
the rafters near the divination classroom for a hint

I don't get them either. The first one I saw the door had symbols and numbers on it. Another had symbols all around the door. Not sure what the heck I'm meant to do. I feel stupid lol

I'm still very early in on the game. I am so excited to see where this goes. Seems that Hogwarts is a lot bigger than I expected and I can't imagine how my innocent Hogwarts student can end up being an evil dark witch using unforgivable curses. I hope we have the choice of whether they can be good or bad.

Also I reaaally hope the main character doesn't die. I remember some rumours that you can leave Hogwarts and be an auror but I have no idea if that's true.

Thankfully I've not been spoiled and I'm going in blind. Such a great game so far.

Where Hogwarts is located isn't actually too far from me, about a 3 hour drive, so I'm thinking of going there at some point.

There is the Great Lake. On the right above the end of the train track you can see the Forbidden Forest. And that's the the viaduct that the Hogwarts express goes over to get to Hogsmeade! You can see the viaduct in game too. Hogwarts is somewhere down the lake on the right just after the forest.

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
Doing these quests from a Slytherin, the devs emulated the way JK Rowling wrote about that house, how the attraction of power felt seductive. Like, I want these new spells and talents. But I know it's wrong. Lol this game is so much more sophisticated than the stuff I played at a young age. I just like stomped on mushroom people. Kids now days are dealing with Shakespearean dilemmas.

The animals are numbered from 0-9 (starting with the bottom left one, then going clockwise to the bottom right). In the diagram, the numbers on the outside must add up to the number in the center.

After my first few hours with Hogwarts yesterday my intial impressions boil down to this: Hogwarts Legacy is an early GOTY contender. Of course, it's still early days, I have a lot of game ahead of me and I'm always conscious of the "honeymoon period" when everything feels fresh, new and exciting but this is how I feel right *now*, Elden Ring gave me similar vibes in the first few hours and ended up being not only my GOTY but one of my all-time faves so let's see where the chips fall when it's all said and done.

The thing that immediately struck me when entering Hogwarts School proper was just how rich and lovingly crafted everything around me was. Gorgeous stained-glass windows, ornate balustrades, golden filigree, vaulted ceilings, paintings rich and alive. There is an attention to detail and clear love of the source material, I'm blown away by it all. Amidst all this countless rooms begging to be explored, surprises around every corner, treasures waiting to be plundered. Mirrors that comment on your appearance, a ghost couple floating through the halls mid-argument, NPC's going about their business, some promising new quests.

There have already been plenty of cool moments but this one is my favourite: I enter a hallway that has 2 suits of armor, one of them is humming a tune, the other smacks him in the head to shut him up, they both revert to their frozen position, I'm quite amused. I go through this same hallway a couple of hours later, armor dude is humming again, I run past since I've seen this show before. All of a sudden there is a loud crash, I turn back around and THIS time the other armor dude is literally beating the shit out of hummer boy culminating in him knocking him to the ground and breaking him to pieces with his giant axe, wow!

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room... the technical issues (gotcha!). Playing performance mode on PS5, overall smooth but there are various issues from standing in front of doors loading up the next area to some texture pop-in to weird stuff with lighting. Ultimately every single open world game I've ever played has had bugs of some kind but it's still worth pointing out, maybe the game could have benefited from a second delay, really polish things up. I'm sure patches will improve these issues but I won't pretend the game is running flawlessly because it isn't.

I could write a lot more, I hope the feeling I have now can be sustained for the dozens of hours I plan to spend in this world, could be something special indeed, I'm already intrigued by the possibilities of the future for this franchise, eager to visit places like Uagadou the "largest wizarding school in the world", located in Africa and "built into the side of a mountain", so much potential, so many directions it could go. But first, back to Hogwarts 🪄

PS: as someone who has read all the books and seen all the movies you don't need to know anything about HP to jump into this world. There are some references here and there and obviously if you know Hogwarts then seeing it fully realized and physically explorable is an extra joy but otherwise it's the same as jumping into any game world, you don't know anything and you learn as you go along 👍

I’ve been checking out a few streams of the game and it looks pretty fun.

One question though, why does Hogmeade(that trading town) have music that sounds like it came directly out of a 90s/2000s JRPG and then nothing else in the game sounds like that?

It’s like a JRPG composer came into the studio to do just that one piece of OST and then left.

There's a certain piece of paper you find somewhere in the castle. It helps a lot.

Spoiler: It's sitting outside the Arithmancy classroom.

No part of your eye or brain is capable of noticing thd difference between 60 and 100fps, period. You can feel it in the movement, but you’re lying to yourself if you think uou can see it.
You can notice much more. 60 is crap. I’ve used 240hz for free months and getting 144hz was very noticeable.
And I would say that only that 24hz was the first time I was disabling motion blur. There were simply enough frames for my brain :p
Of course you can get used back to any fps given side time

Anyone else think this game doesn’t have true HDR? None of the HDR settings look good. Game has a washed out look all the time

Also, why are the controls so sluggish? Massive input lag or something

Other than that, really fantastic so far

Man hope they update with a photomode. Having just completed Plague Tale Requiem where you can basically clip through anything in photomode to a game not having it at all is annoying.

So are certain skills way more useful than others? Or is it basically just about upgrading what you feel like you will use? Since apparently you can't max out all the skill trees.

Didn't expect the map to go that far south. I'm still running about Hogwarts. I've obviously been to Hogsmeade but I haven't really explored the grounds yet. Hogwarts is like a maze I have to heavily rely on the minimap and the direction spell.

Have YOU read the article yourself?

And since we can perceive motion at a higher rate than we can a 60 Hz flickering light source, the level should be higher than that, but he won’t stand by a number. “Whether that plateaus at 120 Hz or whether you get an additional boost up to 180 Hz, I just don’t know.”

“I think typically, once you get up above 200 fps it just looks like regular, real-life motion,” DeLong says. But in more regular terms he feels that the drop-off in people being able to detect changes in smoothness in a screen lies at around 90Hz

This is how I know you guys really don't have phones.

It is trivially easy to see the difference between a phone with a 60hz screen and a phone with a 120hz screen. The difference is so obvious that the first time you see it you probably won't be able to believe it.

Take any iPhone or Android with a 60hz screen and put it side by side with another one with a 120hz screen and just scroll the web browser down a page on GAF. If you still claim you can't see the difference, I'm sorry, you are legally blind.

Yes, I have mixed feelings about HDR as well. I've tweaked with HDR settings quite a bit and I'm not truly satisfied, specially after playing games like Ratchet or Horizon for example.

From what I've read and searched best way to get the best possible HDR settings is actually using the HDR calibration from the PS5, then hop in the game, reset HDR settings to default and move the black point slider to zero. Don't tweak anything else within the game related with HDR.

Figured out how to do those door puzzles! Found a piece of paper that shows you how it works. Also learned how to use the mirrors.

The dueling club was surprisingly challenging. I died about 5 times lol. I'm not sure about the targetting system. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Is the game really 30 hours long?
Depends how you play I suppose. If you focus on just the main story it's probably around 30 hours.

I can see myself playing this for easily up to 100 hours. There is so much to do and collect. I've only seen a tiny bit of the map so far. 95% of it is undiscovered.

He has a problem with Hogwarts but not Apple products? How brave.

edit: I take it back. It seems he has a thing for smashing shit up.

I'll deprive myself of the thing I purchased while still financially supporting it. Smart.

Right? People who do this confuse me. Warner Bros or JK Rowling don't give a fucking shit what you do with it. You can play it or smash it up. They got your money. The only person losing out is YOU.

Depends from the playstyle. I'm about 21 hours in and explored about a 1/3 of the entire map. This game has plenty of distractions from the main quest like side quests, puzzles, minigames, exploration, tasks where you can learn additional spells, quite extensive crafting system, etc. It has tons of stuff, but still doesn't feel overly bloated and overstaying its welcome

How do I get more Wiggenweld potions? Do I need to find a recipe or go buy them from Hogsmeade? So far I've only found one in a chest I think but I need more!

Early on you can buy it on various shops. You learn how to brew this potion quite early in the story as it's part of one of the main quests. Ingredients are quite easy to obtain too, although from my experience they require some exploring

Yeah, the HDR is really weird. The whole image has an overall low contrast look to it. I think the curve of the internal Tonemapper they are using is too flat. Luckily, I'm paying on an extremely good TV (Sony X95K) and I've managed to adjust the image with the TV settings for the most part.

Maybe I should focus on the main story then lol. I'm too busy exploring Hogwarts doing side quests and puzzles.

what's up with the limited storage for gear? you really supposed to sell/trash stuff?

also do you ever get a second gear of spells are you're limited to 4 constantly switching?
I'll be selling a load of stuff when I go to hogsmeade again. I like that they are throwing new stuff at me to customise my character but I think most of it looks dumb. I'm still wearing my hogwarts cloak and the basic ass HP round glasses.

I don't think so. I might be wrong but the way the game words stuff it seems not. It's quite quick to switch out your spells but I'd like to see them let us equip more spells at once. 4 feels too little but I guess it's limited by the controller.

I was using an M9 Sony monitor and it looked good but when I switched to my Sony Oled tv (older xbr, doesn’t even support 120hz) everything thing looked washed out even the system menues. Turned off HDR at system lvl and everything looks great again.

Gave up on messing with setting on both the tv and console, must just be a compatibly issue.

Yes, sell everything that has worse stats than your current gear. By pressing X / Square in the gear menu you can change the style of your current gear to any item you’ve found at one point, so feel free to sell everything.
You can also increase your storage by
doing Merlin’s trials which are unlocked fairly early into the game

Regarding spells
you can use four sets in total once you unlock talents
