Final Fantasy XVI Previews are Dropping

FF7 Remake was poor at being an action game as the combos and responsive attacks felt nonexistent. Enemies hardly ever retaliated or attacked you and there weren't very many of them to overwhelm you so what you're left with is a system where you mash X/A to win
it was poor at being a turn based game as it's only sprinkled in amongst all the action and lacks the sort of strategy and planning that goes into coordinating attacks in a turn based game
Kingdom Hearts did a far better job of merging the 2 gameplay styles together and this game seems like it'll be following KH's book on how to make excellent RPG gameplay.
Kh3 was even more brainless, i sold that piece of shit when i was half game because of how disgustingly brainless it was.
(Sure as hell i wasn't playing for the dogshit story)

Graphic and animations were great tho, probably the best looking square game to date.

Even funnier when we know for a fact from several years of gaming stats that majority of players only play games once, almost never twice, hell most people don't even complete games...

If the campaign of kk3 and ff7repuke are anything to go by, the campaign in normal mode is gonna be a cakewalk for 95% of time unless it's your first action game ever...

People get their panties in a bunch for the 11 hours of cutscenes, but this shit is the real cardinal sin imo.
Yup... only if there was a pace or way we could get this message across to them.

the hardest difficulty be there from the start. I can't even imagine how anyone comes up with stuff like this and thinks it a good idea.

This is not a FF, for fuck sake. They just destroy the essence of FF. Where's the Party system? Where's the character development between your members. Fuck this game. I don't understand why they obsessed with lame western action combats. FF is FF they should stick to why FF is being called FF. Now this game is just a DMC or Dark Souls wannabe.
If this is what it takes to make FF better?
great.

When will developers understand that companion ai will never work in battles? Especially in closed spaces. They always get in your way and break the flow of combat. There needs to be large open spaces for it not to be a hindrance, but even then they only serve to be an eye store confusing you who is friend or foe.

Sounds like the classic, let's try something that could potentially piss off all the old fans and also not land with the new fans we are going for...ultimately selling less than anyone hoped....

...if its a banger it may pay off for them...but why would any final fantasy fan come to this game and be over the moon that it's now a devil may cry game..?

Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't....I'm sure some will love it...I'll probs enjoy it but I think we may see some backlash.

I have quite a few friends that love final fantasy, that I was chatting to on discord last night and they aren't happy it's an action game. Especially the female ones.......we all agreed that we can't wait for remake part 2 though...I think the first was awesome and I'm a ff vii fan too...loved the changes personally.

Well I'm not sure generalizations like this will help much. I'm also a FF fan since forever and I consider FFXIV the best entry and FFXVI the next entry with the most potential on the line given the team behind it. So?

FF has been action for decades and now there's some competent player (battle director) working on a proper BS which doesn't seem to hold any punches. Where's wrong in that?

I think half the fanbase is pissed off simply by the change in style and writing, they prefer a shounen type of game and storytelling over a more mature oriented one but they're to shy to admit at an age of 40yrs they still enjoy products for kids so they go for the BS talk without realising they're not playing turn based FF since ff10. Fuck them off :D Just admit you like tits and big swords and we can make peace! I love them too! But I also love a series that has the courage to grow together with its audience and not being tied down by furries and chronically masturbators!

Not feeling these cinematic boss battles. They are less Iike God Of War 3 and more like Asura's Wrath.

Sounds like you just want to replay the old games.
Why? Why would I want to play once again games that I have already beaten, and not have new experiences?

Its the same as saying that, for someone that wants an action focused FF, just go replay XV.Its stupid.

They seem to be playing closer to a FFXIV boss tbh than anything else. The QTE are usually used to make cutscenes seem interactive and that's it, too much negative attention they're been given atm. MMORPG mechanics & phases seem to be the main focus here. Which is not too different from what they did with FF7R before it tbh.

I'm OK with a new entry having a totally different combat system (pure action now, no RPG stuff) but I'm concerned on how they are going to mess it up in FF9 remake.

I’m getting my stylize JRPG like Granblue Fantasy Relink and Atelier Ryza 3 and getting more darker tone with FFXVI

Getting my turned based combat with games like Octopath 2, complete with job system and we got A LOT of SRPGs and there chance we might get FFT.

I couldn’t be happier, I really have nothing to complain about.

My favourite FF was 13-2 so I don't mind different. But FF16 does not look different we can see clearly were they got their inspiration from. Or should I say From.
It doesn’t look like a FromSoftware game at all.

It looks like Horizon/God of War/Sony 1st Party Exclusive mixed with DMC.

Which is unfortunate because I’ve never cared for Sony’s 1st party games. But what can you do

Would you consider the witcher to be an action game? Or what about say... Vagrant Story?

Can't say if serious. I would just take it that you are joking.
No, it’s not exactly uncommon for people to think that XVI’s art direction is quite bland and that the game overall lacks color. And I don’t think the game is pretty enough at all to omit the CG cutscenes the series is known for.

I don’t think the game is ugly but I don’t think it’s a looker, either. The only pretty cutscenes IMO have been the ones with pre-rendered elements like the Shiva vs. Titan scene.

Ff7 story was for kids? I disagree. Ff has always had mature stories. If anything it seems to have downgraded in recent years.

Ok.. indulge me. What makes an FF game, an FF game to/for you?

Just curious.

Turn-based and party system?

Well, as I have been playing since FF III. I imported an american Super Nintendo to play that game as the ending crashed on Gogo's eyes on a UK SNES using a converter....

I think Final Fantasy is an RPG where I have a party, equip items, have a strong story, switch gear...More or less turn based, yes! I actually quite liked Final Fantasy VIIs combat tbh...

What do you consider a final Fantasy game which has established itself for basically 30 years?

The fact you can't even use the other party members makes this game sorely lacking. Especially for a jrpg.

Funny, my first FF game was so on the SNES, and as also FF3. For whatever reason, the next one played was FF7 on PS1. and went onto to play every one since...including FF tactics.

Something I noticed though, was that the game kept changing. Initially,it was just smaller stuff, slight modifications to the party system and progression system. Jobs, Meteora, Draw... then we started having party automation, but at least we could still issue specific commands to them, and then that became almost full-party automation where you only have special instances that you have control over the party or rather, very specific instructions.

Basically, the party being whittled down to what the Dogo is in FF16 started way back in FF12.

For me, FF is that there is good and engaging gameplay, that has depth and strategy... don't care if it's full turn-based, party-based or some sort of single-player-party-based action hybrid. There is a great story and characters. There is a character called Cid and or Wedge. There are Guardian Forcess/Aeons/Espers/Eidolons/Avatars/Primals/Astrals/Eikons.... that's it.

But it sounds like you don't really want new experiences because they're 'not the same'.

It has to be fresh, but it has to be good also.

Square Enix has constantly fumbled with making an engaging gameplay system for FF titles. Complaints of this feeling too easy is an early warning sign.

Wish they stick to a system they already perfected, then adjust or add new elements each game to make it interesting.

great.
Making a traditional RPG game into action combat game, Darksoul wannabe, Doesn't make it better. It loses the originality. This game is just DMC clone.

Contradiction?

Which system are you wishing they stick to that they have perfected being that you also just said they consistently fumble making engaging gameplay systems?

My number one game series from when I was a kid is now something I barely care about. I guess it fits in with every other entertainment property I liked as a child (star wars, star trek) pushing me out for a new audience. My favorite aspect of all of this is having people that probably weren't even alive when I was playing FF on my NES tell me I don't know what FF was like this whole time because I am not embracing modernity.

Let go of archaic turn based mechanics. These only existed because current tech didn't allow to make it more real time.
We can do it better, why not do it?

Look at mass effect 2 compared to 1? It does not have to be a bad thing

Which system did they already perfect? The one where you pick “attack” from a menu over and over until you win?

And what have they constantly fumbled on? XII’s gambit system and XIII’s paradigm system were freaking awesome. XV’s was flawed but I’d still gladly take any of those over another boring-ass ATB/turn-based FF

I am glad to see that all the previews are so positive!
But I am worried about the exploration, cities and towns. I mean, I know that people keep talking about how important the combat system is in a game and blah blah blah, but, man, what made FF soooo freaking good in the past was not only that. What made me get so inmersed in the classic Final Fantasies was not the combat system at all, but the amazing environments, the towns, their shops, and how explorable everything was. Final Fantasy VII is my favourite game of all time, and I loved those little areas were you found a shop, or a pub, or a casino, or whatever. Something. Little towns and cities made the game world feel trully alive.
And I havent seen one single screenshot of the inside of a town or a city. If they dont exist, it will be a great low blow for me.

I dont even care about the minimap. I have never cared about that shit. In fact I think the minimap was just a resource they used because of technical limitations of the consoles at the time. And Im also ok with the game not being an open world. In fact, I hate open worlds. And classic FF were not open worlds at all. So thats good news to me.

But... where are the towns? I need them!

Please explain to me what part this looks like “Souls” if you saying this because it has dark fantasy setting, you do know there games like Drakengard that came before Demons Souls with dark fantasy setting…..right?
It's the in thing to do nowadays, like From reinvented the wheels. Dodge, dodge, drink potion, slash dodge etc.. I love souls games and Elden ring is a masterpiece but come on

Again, that phrase, "the power of PS5". MKT bullshit, game would work in PC and seriesX with no problems, I'm sure.

Apart from that bullshit PR talking, day one for me.
Saying `the power of PS5`

is not the same thing as saying this cannot be done anywhere else. Its just another way of saying fully optimized to take advantage of the PS5.

Case in point, he also said, game has been optimized on PS5... that simply just means they prioritized building and finishing ONE version of the game first. And only after that would they start looking at ports.

I can understand why that phrase triggers anyone though.I don't particularly like it myself.

You really need to stfu with your trash opinions. First you say forespoken is good now you say this. Persona 5, Divinity OS 2 and Xcom 2 has THE best combat the last decade. Ff7 had 100x better combat than ff15 sorry. Turn based isn't going anywhere.

This is false. There were action rpgs back when this series was at its height and still turn based during the SNES and PSX years. On the SNES The Mana series, Soul Blazer, Star Ocean, on the PSX Vagrant Story, Star Ocean 2, Threads of Fate, Alundra. Turn based are supposed to be strategic and action is action-y. It is two different genres. Equating one as archaic is beyond silly, they just scratch different itches. It would be like saying Turn based strategy only existed because they didn't have the technology to make them RTS. It doesn't work like that, they are design choices. You are spouting fallacies that are often repeated here. What you should be saying is that Action RPGs are more popular now and that is why they switched. Also why I dropped this series since all of those games I listed did not interest me anywhere near as much as FF, Chrono, Dragon Quest etc. The main issue with old turn based FF was that they were piss easy which made the strategy portion of the battle system less impactful if you could basically just auto attack to victory.

My favorite ME is 1 and the series slid into more of a generic squad shooter as it went on. It was a bad thing to me.

Did I hurt your feelings?
I say that the pause based combat is archaic and it’s not wrong. I am not saying it’s bad. personally I would not be interested in turn based ff at all. As I’ve said. It was done this way years ago because action was difficult.
Souls and dmc sound amazing for new ff.

Ff7 remake combat is better than xv. Xv combat is bizarre and not very good
edit: also... why would I want to ask character to perform an action rather than performing it myself?! It does not negate rpg aspects

Final Fantasy 12 /7R like system.

It has everything an rpg should have. Party based, tactical, tense, rewarding...
