Steam Deck 2 is 'years away'

yeah, that´s definitely not what AMD sells it to valve for....that is just the pure manufacturing die cost (if the numbers are correct)....R&D + margin is the biggest part of the price.

The question the other user posted was about how much it would cost going to N5 from N7. It would still be a ~20$ diference. Which is not that big on a machine that cost 400-700$.

Steam Deck 2 is years away but I bet we see a Steam Deck OLED next year.

All those wanting OLED be sure to install Vibrant Deck. Makes it feel like 1/2 an upgrade already.

Does anybody even want a SteamDeck2 right now? Shouldn't you want them to wait another 5 years?

Of course it is. Until it isn't. They wouldn't want anyone to think they should hold off on buying the current one, just like Nintendo with the Switch.

I absolutely love mine. Best portable system I've ever owned. I try to stay away from playing brand-new AAA releases, but for stuff that's a couple years old or emulated, 40-60 fps while sitting in my bed is a dream.

I already know that when the Deck 2 is announced, I'm pre-ordering one. That's how much I love this concept.

Yeah, this is as expected as they said they still have many updates to provide on the Deck and that's the right choice, I don't think they need to rush out a Deck 2 at this juncture.

A device that improves on the Steam Deck in every way will be a must-have for anyone who enjoys portable gaming.

Seemed pretty obvious. They announced before the Deck even released that they would iterate "down the line", and everyone somehow took that to mean that Deck 2 was coming out 8 months after the first one.
They should wait a bit for sure. RDNA3 has been a disappointment, RDNA4 should be a far larger leap and it should "fix" the RT deficiencies(one would hope) that RDNA 1-3 have had. Zen 3 and Zen 4 are pretty amazing compared to the Zen 2 on consoles and the deck but waiting will also give them access to Zen 5 and 3nm tech which should increase efficiency and battery life as well.

I just hope they keep the resolution the same, same with Switch, keep mobile resolution in the 720p range so it can run more games native & dedicate that power to higher fps & settings.

I would buy a Deck 2 in 2024/2025. It will have been 2-3yrs. by then. Definitely don’t want them to wait 5yrs. from now(2028?). Some newer games like Atomic Heart play well enough on Deck while looking pretty good, but then you have games like Returnal that are running 25-30fps at lower than low settings with drops into the teens. At some point we’ll need more power for PS5/Series S|X-only titles.

If Valve doesn’t do it there’s already handheld companies doing it now who also upgrade every 2-3yrs. If they can put out new handheld PCs at a consistent clip, surely Valve can pull it off.

the Deck currently has too many issues for them to not consider making another variant (like a lite) even if it's not a 2

I have a feeling if they dont act quick AYN could steal their marketshare as the AYN Loki is around the same price and much smaller with better tech inside. While the deck is sort of an oversized handheld that lets you play anywhere in your house, the Loki is bringing it closer to 'actual on-the-go handheld' status

I mean I'm happy waiting a few years for a Steam Deck 2 which I can buy in confidence knowing its the final and best iteration of the console, since it's Valve they will never release a Steam Deck 3.

Eh just give us an upgraded board and screen and let us upgrade it ourselves. I'd definitely buy an oled screen on ifixit if it were available.

Like what exactly?
well not many issues, but more specifically 3 MAJOR issues that bring the product down....

incredibly large size, no OLED and lack of battery life.
the damn thing is about as large as a Wii U gamepad, when you're trying to sell a handheld you need it to be actually portable and the Steam Deck is barely teetering the line between actually portable just a house device
the Switch OLED has pretty much set the standard for handheld screens, you need to have your screen be vibrant the same way the Vita 1000 or Switch OLED are vibrant. Many people complain about how awful the Deck's screen looks, Valve needs to fix that asap
and the battery life is real important on these things, if they cant offer a replacement or even a model with better battery it's not good

the software and compatibility are fine, i've tested steam on linux myself and besides destiny 2 everything ran. It's the fucking hardware that is lacking. people want a smaller handheld

they need to make a deck lite that addresses at least the battery life and size. The DS didn't take off until Nintendo made a lite model 2 years later, i think Valve can take notes

You talked about zen4 and rdna3, this wasn't just about a node change.
And an architecture switch would definitely be very costly.

My dog was murdered by a 3.5mm audio port and I will not rest until the standard is dead
I want one that’s significantly smaller. Half the size, minimum. I don’t take mine anywhere because it’s huge and not really portable.

Maybe it's for the best to just wait for RDNA4+. RDNA3 was a modest upgrade and they probably don't want to go through the effort just for a small performance gain.

A Steamdeck or an Ayaneo is exactly what I need. I lost interest in gaming a little. VR is still exciting and I love it when I am playing, but I don't play it as often as I like. It's hard to sit at my computer and play a single player game like Spiderman. I don't want to sit in an office chair and play Elden Ring, hell I don't even feel like sitting on my couch and playing my series x anymore. I think I just want to melt into the couch and play a handheld while we watch tv. I can see myself replaying Wind Waker in bed before night night sleep sleeps.

I was one of those waiting for a SoC upgrade, since I was hoping SD2 would get a 1080p OLED at the same time, it's very disappointing that they have decided to go the console route, this very much flies in the face of what they said previously and what PC gaming is.

Having said that, I will jump on a OLED SD revision since I now know it won't be getting any more powerful anytime soon.

My main wish that Im waiting on is a 1080p OLED screen with the appropriate hardware to push those extra pixels then Im all over it.

Good to know.
Enjoying my Steam Deck immensely while the Switch is now left for my kids to play on.
Some of the previous gen AAA games need fiddling to get right but no major complain so far, playing Sekiro, Elden Ring and Assassin creed odyssey on handheld felt magical, not to mention it emulates everything thing up to PS2 perfectly. Even some PS3 titles too. Also all the discount on Steam is pretty amazing, I am never going to pay the Nintendo tax ever for indies.

Not sure I want an OLED model. I remember the forum telling me my OG OLED Vita screen is just over saturated while the latest LED gen 2 is more color "accurate". Whatever lol.
A Steam deck pro might be nice but let's be real here, the machine will be hot while the battery life would be shit. Let's wait till technology improve and price come down first, take your time Valve.

Hot take: Why do many of the same people that hate on the Series S and blame it for holding back the generation all seem to love the Steam Deck?

It uses x86 architecture and no its not the most powerful gaming handheld on the market.
Hmm okay I’m not really sure which others there are. Shield maybe? Not sure if that’s stronger than the Deck though.

Although I still feel it’s difficult to fault the SteamDeck for holding anything back when there are plenty of much lower end devices, such as Switch, out there on the same playing field.

They're wrong, but just enjoy what you enjoy and don't worry about it. Deck is just a PC and nobody is designing games around it.

The 6800U/680M handhelds are more powerful: Aya Neo 2/Geek, GPD Win 4, AOKZOE A1, etc. I've been tempted to pull the trigger on one them, but on my budget that would require selling my Deck, which I'm not sure I'm willing to do. I've just decided to ride it out with the Deck and upgrade to better laptop later this year.

Series S can definitely hold back some games. That's just a fact.

Steam Deck is the closest PC vidya has ever gotten to console, and what a shock - it's great, and people love it.

If I was Valve I wouldn't be looking at a Deck 2 until 2026 at the earliest. The hardware needs to advance and you need to let costs continue to come down on important parts. It's not just about specs.

I'd buy a SD Lite if they could squeeze the same specs until the Switch size. Also throw in an OLED screen and I'm double sold.

Deck already struggles in modern AAA games. Waiting to 2026 would be crazy. There’s no need to wait that long since it’s a PC and games aren’t being made for a fixed spec.

Anything later than 2025 would be weird

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Since the SD can handle modern games like RE4, SF6, Dead Space, Hogwart Legacy and now TLOU Part 1, I dont think there’s need to worry that it can continue to handle upcoming modern games in next few years

Those are all cross-gen games. Well, ok, a few technically aren't, but they clearly could be. Let's see how it handles stuff like Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws. My bet is "not great".

Nah. Exoprimal works on SD too. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart will also be playable on SD.

Steam deck users. Get used to only having two official steam decks. Three ain’t never coming out.

Maybe someone played “3 is the magic number” nonstop at gabe or something?

Because boy does he hate that number.
