Steam Summer Sale 2023 |OT| June 29th - July 13th

PC virgin here so this will be my first big Steam sale. I hope I there is a good deal on Dark Souls, Scholar of the First Sin and DS3. Maybe Sekiro as well. Need From Softwares classics in my PC library. A good sale on The Witcher 3 would be great too as I'm itching to play it again with the next gen enhancements.
One cool thing about the souls games on PC is the mods. Dark souls 1 has some extremely impressive mods out now, like daughters of ash

My wallet no longer cry's for these sales because they seem to not be as good as the ones in the past.

Yeah, this is what I'm looking forward too the most. Daughters of Ash and Seeker of fire for DS2 are must plays for me right now. I think DS3 also has something similar. Very excited for this!

They are all old games so chances are they will get a good dirt cheap sale. I remember playing Dark Souls for the first time after building my PC it was so much fun. Sekiro is totally worth buying it's an amazing game.

For The Witcher 3 you can also check GOG.com. That's CD Projekt's own store but usually if Witcher/Cyberpunk goes on sale on GOG it'll also be on sale on Steam. GOG is a DRM free site so you can just download the games from your account without the need for installing a client. GOG Galaxy is a great client so I'd download it anyway.

With The Witcher season 3 coming out soon on Netflix I'd be surprised if there isn't a Witcher sale soon. You should also play Witcher 1 and 2 if you haven't. Witcher 1 is PC exclusive and Witcher 2 is Xbox/PC exclusive. Witcher 1 is very dated (they are working on a remake) so I wouldn't blame you for skipping it but definitely play Witcher 2.

Less than 4 days left.

I just can’t get excited for Steam sales anymore. The prices just aren’t great, less impulse buys than ever. PC hardware being out of control doesn’t help either. And for anything I’d actually want to play for cheap, I am being given these games on PS+.

I am happy for any newcomers that are able to get into some games that are on decent sale. Someone mentioned Fez, that game was awesome and getting it for $5 or less is great.

I might grab the Hitman 3 DLC if it goes on sale since it's not available from third parties. I keep wavering on Tetris Connected but historical low on Steam is $20 and that just seems ridiculous for just another version of Tetris. Epic's $15 low is more palatable but I'm just sticking with Lumines for now which was less than $5 when I got it from some key site.

I thought of another one. It's some kind of rail planning simulator - RailRoute I think? - where you plan a train system with tracks and switches.

My thoughts exactly. Its not just on steam either, console sales have been crap since 2021 really. Ever since inflation you don't see many 50% off games, or smaller games for under $10. For steam, a lot of times I see better prices at cdkeys site than the store sales.

A few tips, my good fellow:

Be sure to check sites like IsThereAnyDeal.com or SteamDB to see what the best deals are. They have pretty good price tracking historical info too, so you can see what you might be able to expect when the sale starts next week. Unfortunately for you, From has been extremely stingy with their sales since Elden Ring became a household name. But - you never know!

Sometimes even after the sale goes live, Steam still doesn't have the best price. I like to shamelessly plug Augmented Steam as a way to see if something is available elsewhere for cheaper.

Steam's wishlist functionality is good, especially with the above add-on. You'll also get email notifications for stuff you put there now for when the sale goes live.

Unless you're independently wealthy, try to narrow your focus if you can. If you're coming from the world of console gaming, you're likely going to see some crazy prices that you're not used to. Your instincts will say "Even though I have this on PS4, I better re-buy it on Steam, so I can (play it on my Steam Deck | have a PC backup copy | play through this again at some point with crazy good graphics). The Witcher 3 + all DLC will probably be $10, maybe even less. Even though stuff is cheap, it all adds up quick. It's easy to get carried away during your first big sale.

Have fun!
Is there a reason the is there any deal site doesn't have cdkeys_com on it. I have gotten some fantastic deals from them. Especially if you miss a sale, that site will then usually have it discounted still.

You are right there is so many other ways to buy from Steam that its best to look at all your options.

Same here, steam sales really aren't what they used to be.

I really miss the old days, like around 2012, when each sale was a real daily event. Each new day was exciting with new time limited sales.
It was almost like bets, do I buy this now at -50%, or do I wait for a possible better deal in the coming days like -75%, but also risking that it's not on sale anymore.

It felt more active, and there were much better deals, just on shorter time frames.

Then steam refunds happened and this was over. Now you just check your wishlist once when the sales start, and that's it.

I was thinking because i was getting older i wasnt really into these sales anymore but you're right, they arent what they were 10+ years ago.

There were way more daily deals that had decent discounts, more recently it just seems a bit meh.

I think it's just because cd keys sells gray market stuff, and that the developers usually don't see much (if any) of the sale of games there. There are a ton of sites like that (Kinguin, Instant Gaming, G2A) but they're all honestly pretty sketchy - stuff like selling "insurance", in case the key they sell you isn't valid. I'm pretty sure that IsThereAnyDeal only partners with sites that source their keys directly from the developers - ie the developers get their cut of the sale.

In a way, Steam refunds have been a huge bummer for the sales. Steam has policies now that you can't discount a game deeper than you've already discounted it in the last 30 days, to cut down on the number of refund requests for people wanting to get a cheaper price. The side effect of this is that daily deals are essentially a no-go as they would break this rule. In the past it felt more interactive, like "should I buy this now, or will it possibly go cheaper later in the sale?" Now, the price of a game on sale will be the same throughout, so just buy what grabs you right away.

I agree that it zaps some of the fun out of these sales, but personally I'd rather have the stronger consumer protections that refunds afford.

I'm drowning in games so I'm only going to spend 20-30€ tops.
Grabbed Returnal (42% off) and Ghost Song (49% off) on Cdkeys, also pre-ordered R&C (32% off).

Tips for first timers.

1. Get your wishlist ready. Make it as big as you want, and ignore it if you want, it's fine. Don't get games you realistically don't want to play just because you know the name, and they are 80% off. Your backlog will be big enough without them.
2. The bundles often offer better deals but see point 1.
3. Set a budget.
4. Use third party sites like gg.deals as the browsing experience on steam isn't great for finding the biggest cuts.
5. Don't go in looking only at games that have literally just dropped this year. This isn't retail where they have to clear dead stock off the shelves.

unless this sale follows the OG sales from 2012-2013 where everything was like 90% off, Now days prices are hiked before the sale so the deal isn't like what it use to be.

Anybody excited about a Steam sale never experienced a REAL Steam scale. That's when the deals so good you kept spending money.

The good times have been over for years now, modern Steam sales are usually a disappointment. I'm more excited about the free weekly game from the Epic store than about Steam sales.

Just create a watch list on https://gg.deals/ and buy a game when it hits the right price.

A lot of the stuff almost feels like Amazon sales where it's the same shit going on sale for the same price and then being dropped back down, rinse and repeat again and again

Here we go again, baby.

I didn't check the Steam store just yet, but I was definitely hoping for High on Life, Scorn, Hi-Fi Rush, and Project Cars 3 to go on sale.

I will probably grab Hogwarts Legacy too.

I don't know if I'm gonna buy much. I still have shit I bought from the summer steam sale in 2012 I haven't touched.

Kinda interested in boltgun if it runs on deck decently

Anything good for the Ally / Deck?
I suggest Vampire Survivors, and the slew of survivor-likes that have cropped up. Some of them are tons of fun. They typically run great on the portable systems, and are usually pretty inexpensive anyway (and will likely be discounted during the sale). My top recommendations are Vampire Survivors, Spirit Hunters, Soulstone Survivors, and Renfield in that order of my personal favorites. (Renfield is great, but loses points somewhat because they haven't yet implimented cloud saves).

Brotato is also really good, too.

Forgot about that one - it doesn't follow the formula as closely as the ones I posted above, but it's also really stinking good and just hit 1.0 the other day.

EDIT: I think I have an addiction to these games.

Vampire Survivors - 78.2 Hours
Spirit Hunters - 15.3 Hours (I just bought this last week)
Soulstone Survivors - 24.9 Hours
Renfield - 14.6 Hours
Brotato - 24.9 Hours

I've also put a bunch of time into Vampire Survivors on Xbox and Android.
