First Baldur's Gate 3 PS5 Impressions - "No Stable 60FPS - Performance vs Quality Mode"

That german guy is barely good for hdr, let alone performance.
I would wait for real analysis.

That’s why I hate modes. At least fucking tell me what I am choosing. For sure performance and quality modes arent the same but different target.

I'd take this "tech analysis" from an unknown channel with a grain of salt. PS5 user impressions are all extremely positive in terms of performance. Not sure why this unknown channel was even posted in the first place.
Both can be true. The prologue as well as the first few areas of act 1 most user will still be at, should run pretty well based on the PC version. Loading a late act2 or act3 save though will paint a much different picture.

Performance mode is probably there to check the "performance mode" box. Shouldn't exist.

Loading time is abysmal, reeks of a shit port.
It seems like it. I’m playing on my ancient 6700k and 980ti, I run it at 1280x800 ultra and stream to deck. Load times are super fast on ssd. I thought it’d be perfect on ps5.
I should qualify I’m in the first act. The initial boot is not super fast.

Fuck. Not going to bother with this shit in 2023.
Will jump in when the PS5 release is fixed. Can’t run this on my M1 Mac mini either.

You making performance thread that's not DF is the real story here lol

The video probably isn’t far off the mark. I checked the FPS on my TV and it definitely fluctuates in the 50-60 FPS all the time. Shimmering when panning the camera is very easy to see as well, indicating a low resolution.

This is what we get when we don't expect software to work anymore. Game devs really don't give a fuck anymore, the next gaming crash can't come soon enough

When playing on my PC:
  • Initial load up: 48 to 60 secs
  • Fast travel on local on map: 5 to 10 secs
  • Fast travel external map/region: 48 to 60 secs
Clocked 120 hours @ act III.

I've endured longer loading for much less.

I'm playing on PS5 since yesterday and the game runs and looks find in performance mode. Only the loading times are very long, indeed. And I have serious problems with my 3D headset: The sound turns completely off after every 15 minutes.

Great thread to counter all the shitposting about Star Field 🤣 look people .. these are games, not smooth framerates as real life. Enjoy what has been given to you and don’ t complain to much.
If it was given for free different story. So people have the full right to complain about something that doesn't work properly(bugs, framerate issues etc.). People like you are part of the problem.

Enjoy what has been given to you and don’ t complain to much.
The sheer arrogance you have or are you just ignorant?

How well will the split screen run then, after all the outrage of split screen being removed from the S too?
I bet the Ps5 (and series x) split screen will be pretty poor experience

Thank God it's a really stellar game and seems to run reasonable on performance mode. And in truth if you can squeeze out a stable 30 on PC you should play it as well.

But no one has access to act 2 or act 3 rn on ps5.

That performance. Holy shit....what happens in act 3?

Such a shame for the game of the year. I wonder if pro consoles could get it to 60?

I'm pretty sure the game is cross-save.

It has but I finished the pc version already and my act 3 saves dont show up on ps5 I have access to my ps5 save on my pc tho. The early access says it is specifically for act 1.

Yeah.. I was gonna double dip, but don't think I can take the resolution and framerate hit. Surely the PS5 is capable of more than this no?

In regards to the load times, they must not be using hardware decompression. Must doing something like Metro Exodus, using a single cpu core for data decompression when loading.

Erm I’m playing this on PS5 and it looks very sharp and performs great in performance mode.

Well There It Is Jurassic Park GIF

adamsapple adamsapple - think you should update the OP and add a disclaimer here that like a dozen PS5 players have reported otherwise.

TL;DR

- Quality mode: 1440p, targets 30 FPS
- Performance mode: Also looks 1440p but targets 60 FPS

- Quality mode: 30 FPS, can drop below target.
- Performance mode: Lots of drops, can drop below 30 as well. Has lots of screen tearing.
- VRR fixes tearing as long as the game is in VRR range
- Visual quality between Quality and Performance looks same.

- Load times: Fast travel took 43~ seconds.
what?

The fuck?
Sounds like one is just unlocked vs locked framerate. Same settings. The game didn't even get a physical release so my guess is they didn't really put as much effort into the PS5 version as they should have. It's a shame because it's a great game. Who knows, maybe a patch will fix it.

Mostly played split screen yesterday and framerate didn't seem entirely stable (not much of a surprise tbh) but as soon as my friend disconnected and there was only one player it seemed fine.
Can confirm that loading times seem longer than usual though.
Had some issues with all kinds of things (missing sound in dialogues, couldn't enter doors etc.) at first but I suspected it might have been because I booted the game before the full game was downloaded so once restarted everything worked fine.
Gonna play some more later today but in the end I think it's best to wait for other performance comparisons before calling it a "bad port".

Edit: I should add that this was the intro sequence/first 2 hours of the game.

Games are not life changing events, enjoy them for what they are, critic that is on point but don’t go overboard which happens a lot here , remember that people are developing, (not robots) and imagine what the challenges can be as a developer.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

Regarding the different findings by the video guys versus reddit guys:

video guys probably use crosssave and use their PC characters with shit ton of changes to the game world done already, shit ton of stuff in the inventory etc

reddit guys are playing the game fresh

I would not be surprised if this contributed to some of the difference

either way, PS5 version is not particularly amazing, glad I am on PC where I get 60fps and mods

The fuck?

He is blind. You can clearly see in the video that the quality mode looks much sharper and the performance mode has worse IQ. This game is fine playing at 30 especially if its solid and without screen tear

Noone cares about the ps5 performance of the game.

Everyone knows that not even 5% of the playstation fanbase will play it.

Their hype for Baldur's Gate was fake cause they thought it would be a ps5 exclusive through the back door.

Proof is that they dont even know how the game is called and are consistently butchering its name on twitter.
