What is the surprise here anyway?

Microsoft has been moving from a product company to a service company for more than a decade.
Them abandoning Windows Phone and embracing Android is just another proof of that.

With Xbox is no different, their long-term plans were always of turning Xbox into a service sooner or later.
In previous interviews they made it clear they were never opposed to launching their games on other platforms.

My guess is that when cloud becomes the norm, they will go all-out on exclusivity again.

I did read your post and you're still arguing that they're only going to do Live Service and "case by case" releases. That isn't going to be the case. They're clearly preparing to move everything to other platforms beginning with Live Service and older games. Then they'll transition into a third party publisher with 6-12 month timed exclusives on Xbox platforms to squeeze what little juice is left out of Game Pass.
Feel there will be a lot of tears on here next week when Phil tells us Xbox consoles are going nowhere, and all this ends up being what the orig rumour was, HiFi Rush and Sea of Theives (and possibly other MP or live service centric games) being ported to other consoles.
Possibly the usual 'case by case' message in terms of other games coming to other consoles, maybe 1 year after release on Xbox etc.

But the console is still important to them, Gamepass is still important to them, Gamepass needs hardware, etc, etc.

Thanks for clearing all that up, no point them saying anything next week as you've laid out their road map.

The question is what killed the Xbox Brand?
Was it GP?
XboxOne?
No Exclusives?

Phil stated that the "xboxone" version was the worst one to lose because the people build their digital library with that gen.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
What are they waiting for? they MUST have made the decision already!

If the rumours are UNTRUE they need to say something now, the fact they are not saying anything now says it all really.
They need to consult their PR team to make their announcements sound less bad.

What are you talking about?

They killed the PS5 version of Starfield a few months ago to gain market share...

Now they are porting it back to PS5...

They bought the Indiana Jones exclusive and now they are bringing it to Playstation

LOL

Keep dreaming it's all part of their plan.... LOL

Nope. Not 100% anyway.

I still think this doesn't mean full third-party for MS, but we'll see.
So let's say the unthinkable happens and starfield releases in a fixed state and playstation bros buy it.

You think that bank will satisfy MS. Get real pal. They will quickly get everything ready for playstation.

Worst thing that can happen for xbros is MSs shit selling reasonably well.

There will be some backtracking, Phil answers to Satya and I think he will feedback to him with some opinions but the decision will have been made.

My opinion is they will have a small collection of titles they are porting and then they will say that the core titles will be exclusive for at least 12/18 months then be a case by case basis.
This is exactly what will be said but once that door has been opened.....it's only a matter of time.

Plus, nobody would buy into the xbox ecosystem because, like with gamepass, everyone will just shrug and think 'ill wait for it to come to Ps5' thus damaging sales still further until there is no choice but just to become 3rd party.

It really is the beginning of the end for xbox.....which is shit because the games industry needs a competative environment to thrive.

They’ve probably got a team of MBAs inventing the “strategy” right now. And when that one doesn’t work they’ll invent another one.

The industry as a whole will be much less interesting and competitive without Microsoft if it really is it. It will become exclusively a Japanese market. People that are cheerful about this are completely dumb.

It’s really not good.

In a better world MS would be 10%+/- of market share with Sony (so, either somewhat ahead of the other) and both would be doing well enough to thrive but also be pushed strongly to compete with each other and offer better games and tech.

I know Sony are doing well but they have badly needed a stronger competitor pushing back against them since the Xbox One launched and I feel they’re weakened in terms of variety and their focus on certain types of cinematic AAA games.

None of that is confirmed yet. Thats what a rumour is, a rumour.

Bro, when Todd and Bobby came in did you think they would be suddenly loyal to the console? I guarantee you if they heard shutting it down was on the table they were all about it.

I honestly don't know.

Do you think if Starfield sold well on PS then that would mean nothing would be off the table? Forza, Halo and Gears all ported to PS? I find that hard to imagine.

Them planning a special business event to announce their plans and vision for the future of Xbox can only mean one thing: those changed drastically. So, what I'm getting from this is that the news they'll share will be even bigger then the leaks suggest.

Insane to witness this happening in real time like this, will be a very slow week.

Did they buy the Indy exclusivity or Bethesda, because I think this game has been in dev for a while.

But I agree they changed plans in the last year or two.

It will become exclusively a Japanese market.
Sure, if you neglect the fact that SIE is headquartered in San Mateo, California and they've basically dismantled most of their Japanese studios.

But ignoring that, how would it be any different than the Nintendo/Sega or Nintendo/Sony/Sega days when all the players were Japanese?

All of those but to be honest I think the biggest is the xbox one priced at 499 with kinect instead of console only at 299 or even 399 (and especially the always online bullshit 10 years ago).
Also despite having more exclusives than PS4 in the first few years of the generation most games were kinda crap and once sony gained pace it was over.
Gamepass just made people get used to not buying their games day one and the quality continued to not be there with a few exceptions here and there.

I think people that were cheering for MS to buy the whole industry to put Sony out of business were way dumber

Xbox hasn't been competitive for a decade with Sony

It was competitive for around 3 years because Sony put out a $600 console in 2006 to launch Blu-ray as a medium

is clear that this was not a controlled leak.

it was suggested this decision was done by a lot of inner fight.

and the fact that the official announcement is going to take until next week, implies that maybe they are trying to spin the hell out if this to try not to look as bad.....but the damage is done. and is massive.... and growing

Feel free to be snarky all you like, these leaks have made it absolutely clear that they're transitioning to software.

Only a fool or a blind fanboy can look around at all the fires and think otherwise.

Be honest when we were all following the ABK/MS trial thing last summer going on into the new year did we really think in February we would expect this to happen?

As soon as MS releases its new AAA 10/10 game for all platforms and every new game from legacy IPs start showing improvements (HALO/GEARS) I fully expect a thank you from all xbox fans for saving you from your greed blinded selfs .... if not for us resisting this shit gamepass trojan horse idea and MS going third party you would be playing filler rushed shit for the rest of your lifes.

You are welcomed!

What else is left for MS?

Cut the price of both consoles with six months of GP free. Then, pay billions to third party publishers to ensure all their games are on GP day one?

They'd bleed money, but they'd increase console sales for a bit.

It's probably a good idea that I'm not in charge of Xbox.
