Steam Restricting Helldivers 2 Purchases in Countries Without PSN

It was working great before and everyone was happy, so why change it?

The funniest thing is 20 years ago that was the case with XBL - you couldn’t make an account if you lived in Poland so everyone had an account set to other country. Microsoft knew perfectly about it but didn’t care. My guess is Sony would have been perfectly fine with people making different PSN accounts if their country is not supported, but Steam said nope. Looks to me like some high-level trolling or just making sure the restrictions on Steam mirror these on PSN.

They will reverse this PSN login, probably make it optional. No way will they be fine with restrictions like this.

This is the stupidest move Sony has ever made. This goes right beside Xbox One restrictions they wanted to implement at launch causing Microsoft to lose the entire generation.

Helldrivers 2 has been extremely successful for SIE, and it was their huge chance to enter the live service ecosystem everyone so desperately wants to enter (even though it has proven shit for most of them). With this, every other game that they release will be received extremely bad.

I imagine they are doing this because of their new layout for Steam games that was announced with Ghost of Tsushima. So they figured that people would love to earn trophies and shit, and at the same time they could take advantage of people by making them have an account. This is so stupid.

Every good will people had to try out a live service game from Sony, is now gone. They need to backtrack this stupid decision next week, or this will really have Xbox One-levels of backlash and consequences.

This won't be anywhere near as bad as the Xbox one situation. Microsoft basically destroyed its entire console brand. This Helldivers situation has nothing to do with their console business. It only affects PC players and Sony's PC push. At worst, you'll see less PC ports.

Knowing Sony they won't do shit about this.
Because this is about their goals about how to handle the PC platform and integrate it with the PS ecosystem for all their future games.
The requirement was also there since the beginning and temporarily suspended because of the server issues, so it's not really a change of mind.
The only awkward aspect if that the game was also sold in minor markets on Steam where there is no PSN so they can't tell officially to these people to use a workaround, they'll have to refund but it's probably a really small loss of players.
They went nuclear with Cyberpunk and they'll go nuclear with this.
One of the minor markets in question is China… which has the highest user population of any country on Steam.

They probably blocked 20-30% of their user base with this dumb move… after the fact which is even dumber.

Review bombing is well deserved and now they are going to get refunded to the wazoo by other people as well.

Maybe this will finally force Sony to support PSN worldwide (with exception of sanctioned countries)?

Console players could benefit from PC players's willingness to not let corporations shit on them. Who knew.

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
Well, PC gamers were right, my apologies to all the ppl I mentally accused of overreacting lol

I'm still not 100% on what exactly is going on here, but I will say it was very dumb of Sony to rock the boat in any way when they had such a runaway success that is Helldivers 2: don't fuck with shit that isn't broken mid-level execs. Rather take your win and keep winning.

Sony fcked up BIG TIME. Not the first time.

And yet, there was one, UNBELIEVABLY EASY way to do it:
First stage - no psn req
Second - psn not required, but you could have achievements unlocked on your psn account
Third - still psn is not required, but if you login, you can have cross-progression
Fourth - psn is required for 'much cheaters on psn'

Bang!!

But nooo

Just watch when the new CoD hits steam and nobody gives a shit about the Activison account requirement again.
Activision account is available anywhere whereas PSN is only available in 69 countries around the world, that's why this has happened.

Some of the original noise was because the required login has only just been implemented after purchase (even though it was supposed to be there anyway but still)

A lot of people(myself included) thought Jimbo was the problem. Turns out it could be this guy. A combination of him and Sonyfornia seems like straight up poison for all the success Playstation has enjoyed for so many years.

Sony fucked up big time here.

How to clip the wings of the most successful surprise game of 2024. Gg

Not for democracy at all!

So hadn't played this game yet, purchased and installed 5 minutes ago skipped PSN login information and that was it and continued playing even though I have a PSN account just to see.

Literally all I wanted from their PC-push was Ghost of Tsushima on Steam. Now we're less than two weeks off and they had to go and pull this shit lmao.

If the game had launched with it, this wouldn't be an issue at this point at all.
That is BS and you know it. The game had it at launch and removed it due to their initial server issues without saying it would never come back. Still, you are fanning the flames of it as if you disagreed with the requirement being there but for SoT it is totally ok to require a new account, not that it is surprising seeing you do that ;).

The policy isn’t in effect yet, starts from May 30th.

And to me, that’s enough time for Sony to work on it. We don’t even know yet if these countries don’t have to login. It might be nothing and only required for the countries with PSN support.

But seriously, such an amazingly tone-deaf dick move by Sony. A complete failure to read the room. I am well aware that a lot of other games, even single-player games, require second launchers when purchased on Steam, but usually that is something known to the buyer before buying the game, and you can make an informed purchase. Also, those second launchers are not restricted either by geography or by other hardware. None of the players of those games would have appreciated a switcheroo like this after buying the game.

Putting the drama aside, Sony should really start supporting more countries. It's crazy you can't (officially) have a PSN account in countries like Azerbaijan, Egypt or Monaco (how do all the celebs living there play videogames? ;)).

I think they will. It’s why i think this is just temporary.

Requiring PSN is the foot in the door for the multiplayer requirement of PS+ for when sony supports pc in the near/distant future, them supporting pc will eventually spark an outcry when console players start to ask why they have to pay for multiplayer while pc players do not have to pay.

Here you can see the implementation with the new PlayStation overlay.

Not surprised with this situation, they are unaware of their fans all the time, dont care about their employees and pull shit from the store all the time.

I know someone affected because their country isnt supported and they cant play the game with us anymore, utter cmusterfuck

This is pretty shit. Not a fan of logging into services once I've launched a game, I just want to fucking play it after spending money on it.
