Iran: US ScanEagle drone 'captured over Gulf'

The Iranian military says it has captured an unmanned US drone in its airspace over Gulf waters.

The Revolutionary Guards said they had brought down a ScanEagle aircraft - one of the smaller, less sophisticated drones employed by the Americans.

Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, quoted by the Fars news agency, said the drone had conducted several reconnaissance flights over the Gulf in recent days before being caught.

There has been no comment from the US.

The ScanEagle drone is a low-cost, long-endurance aircraft built by Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing.

No details of how Iran captured it but what do you think? another faulty plane or Iranian Rebolutionary Guard hacking?

Cool.

It's hard to hate them for it. If someone was in my air space I'd take that shit down too.

The scaneagle is so small and slow that capturing one entails putting your hand of the window and grabbing it.

Not much of a concern at all every country in the world has tech that far surpasses the scaneagle as it is a cheap and simple system and this doesn't even scratch the embarrassment of the last drone they captured.

Can we have a uber top secret undetectable unstoppable drone back pls?
No.

It's kind of weird though that they would use such a cheap and detectable drone in Iran. The tensions are so high you'd think they'd do everything to not get caught.

...unless they want to get caught *puts on tinfoil hat*

How is it legal to spy on another country?

Oh only the US can :/.

What country are you bringing your elitist attitude from today? Every country has spy planes and spy satelites, it's not something that only the U.S does.

Personally, it seems like that time of the month where Iran says something so that we can pay attention to them again

If they did shoot it down I hope the U.S handles it better than they did last time

Haven't you heard everybody is spying everybody, I think I can make a Profesor Layron Puzzle of that,

One of these three countries are not spying, and the other two are spying. Based on their statements, can you determine who is not spying?

Country A: I never spy.
Country B: A is spying. I'm the one not spying!
Country C: B is spying, I'm the one not spying.

Everyone's doing it dude.

What? Pretty much every major country has spies out there.

But only US can get away with it. If it was the other way, everyone will be up in arms to condemn them.

I'm only talking about drones btw.

Don't worry.. Iran's gonna have a drone of its own in 6 months!

This is like terrestrial XCOM.

Hopefully they're desperate for cash and sell those American Alloys so they can't use them to build something deadlier.

Get away with what? And how does a country get punished if they have not gotten away with it? What precedence is there that a country has gotten punished for spying?

I really like it when US drones get taken down like this. You don't want USA getting too cocky with its death robots. It's good that things like this keep em in check just a tiny bit.

I thought Iraq's military was pretty weak after years of sanctions? I mean, I know they still had a military, but it wasn't exactly state of the art.
I'm speaking about their Golden years then came the sanctions and you know the rest, this can happen to any strong country now

Competetion is always good!

I meant from media and other countries. Not necessarily from UN because as far as know, each country has its own rights/laws to deal with it.

Doesn't really matter. When we rolled into Iraqistan originally the US had like four drones in some guy's backyard. There was no reason for Iraq to have invested money in thinking of ways to capture or down drones flying over their territory because they were already occupied by the time Drones made it big time in the US military.

That's what happens when you fly over another countries airspace.

Only very occasionally!

They sure got away with spying on UN delegates. Still don't know why this didn't have any bigger consequences. Can't imagine someone like Russia being ok with that in any form.

Now we have to build one to replace it. Huzzah for the economy. We don't even have to pretend to be sad about the pilot!

Canada has spies. Canada.
Actually, Canada kind of doesn't.

CSIS has a rule that say that their spying has to be purely defensive, so while they're allowed to spy on other countries, it has to be done while standing on Canadian soil.

So like, if they want to buy some country's secrets from some other spies, they can't meet up in the other guy's embassy, they have to meet in the Canadian one. The spies are allowed to go around foreign countries and talk to people and stuff, but they have a strict "no spying" rule when they leave the embassy.

I'm sure the Canadian spies don't follow this rule, because they're spies, so it's not like people would know.

But then again, in 1999 Canada lost some classified documents because someone broke into a Canadian spy's car while he was busy watching a hockey game.

Iran is not allowed to purchase those aircrafts in the market, so it had to resort to create indigenous designs that only god knows how they fly. I'm sure Iranian engineers will be thrilled to examine its innards, from cameras to avionics.

Apparently my cousin whom I no longer talk to was a big person in charge of Drone activity in the past. oh well....

I'm sure indigenous drones will fly fine, since that sort of technology isn't really obscure or difficult to figure out. At it's base level, it's physics.

Oh, flying is easy in this day and age, you could just strap a GoPro to an RC plane and call it a day, but those planes have somewhat advanced steering, optics and communications systems that could be helpful for a somewhat isolated nation like Iran. I mean, not too long ago they caught this company in Spain that was trying to smuggle refurbished jet pieces to Iran so they could maintain their Shah-era F-14s.

That UAV is probably not a gold mine like that stealth aircraft they captured some time ago (I bet the Pentagon is still freaking out about that), but it could be useful for them.

Hobbyists can do all that with drones already. Mobile phone hardware has all the tech and computing power to operate these things.

Doubt they'll learn much from this plane.
