Mario Lemieux's 1992-93 was the greatest single season a modern pro athlete ever had.

You can add steroid era Bonds seasons to this mix and I believe Lemieux's 1992-1993 season still comes out on top. And to this day no one talks about it as one of the all time great seasons - even if you just limit it to hockey which is kind of amazing to me.

You hear about the Gretzky 215 point season, Steroid Bonds and his video game like stats, the OJ Simpson 2003 yards in 14 games, Dan Marino's 48 TD and 5084 yard season.

I'd like to make a case for Mario Lemieux:

I honestly believe that Mario Lemieux is the greatest athlete of the last 40 years and that argument can purely be made almost entirely on his 1992-93 season.

- He missed 24 games due to injury - that's slightly under 1/3rr of an NHL season, and won the scoring title. That's like winning the home run race in baseball while only playing 117 of 163 games.

- His team was out of the playoff race when he was injured. He came back and led them on a 17 game winning streak which is still the longest winning streak in NHL history. And keep in mind, this was when the NHL still had ties. In the post lockout NHL, games are either won or lost.

To top it off, the reason he missed 24 games was to get chemotherapy treatment for CANCER. The guy pulled off one of the best seasons in NHL history despite getting cancer in the middle of it and going through three months of radiation treatment. That's not like coming back from cancer after taking a year off and having a decent season, the guy literally came back from cancer the day after his last radiation treatment, scored a goal and got an assist and then went on to win the scoring race and lead his team to 17 straight victories.

People often like to throw out names like Donald Bradman or Wilt Chamberlain - super old school guys who played in a different era with rules so different it might as well have been another sport. My counter to those names would be to give them cancer in the middle of their best seasons and see how'd they fare after three months of chemo.

I think he doesn't get enough recognition outside of Pittsburgh because he played hockey and didn't put up the volume that his contemporaries did. But in my mind, based pure on the 92-93 season, there isn't a single athlete in the last 40 years that was as good at his sport as Lemieux was at hockey. Not Jordan, not Ali, not Bonds, not Barry Sanders. Nobody.

I'm a huge Pens fan, so all I can do is smile and nod at this. Seeing his stats on paper is one thing, but watching him somehow put the puck in the net while skating through three guys was fucking magical.

He has always been my favourite hockey player ever since I was a kid. Great man, incredible athlete. I have this T-shirt and it just totally makes my day whenever I'm wearing it and anyone points it out. :)

Knowing very little about hockey but having seen the effects of chemotherapy on both my parents, doing what he did after undergoing treatments is enough for me to put him near the top of the greatest single season ranks.

Pedro Martinez's 1999 stats were unbelievable. Finishing the season with a 23–4 record, an 2.07 ERA and 313 strikeouts. (pitching tripple crown).

I agree with this, 100%. His entire career was fantastic. He even took the team over in order to keep the team in Pittsburgh.

I also almost got him killed after a game at the Igloo. I was pulling out of the stadium, he pulled behind me and Jagr was riding with him. I slammed on the brakes and said "holy shit that's Mario Lemieux!" So he stopped behind me, threw up his hands in frustration and waited. Meanwhile both of our cars are sitting out in the street, just waiting to get hit. I woke up and realized I was holding up traffic so I pulled out of the way, he pulled out and I drove off stunned.

Ok, so this was a better story in my head.

Wow that's right I remember that run. Just like that, a dominating team with the return of one guy. I wasn't his hugest fan at the time as he kept the Bruins from a Cup but I loved that he was one of the talest players in the league while being the best. I was a hockey player at 6'4" tall so I could appreciate it.

So what your saying is that he got hot for 2/3 of a season?

Greatest athlete ever, bro.

I believe the OP is only making a case for Mario Lemieux having the greatest single season performance for any modern professional athlete.

So yes, he got hot for 2/3 of a season. But why should that diminish his claim to the title that the OP is presenting? This is about a single season performance, not an athlete's overall resume (never mind that Lemieux's entire career was pretty darn good).

I'm not going to speak for other sports, but just in hockey, Bobby Orr had a few seasons that were better. He's overlooked because he doesn't really hold any records anymore, but nobody dominated like he did all over the ice.

Yeah, there are lots of good second place seasons to be made - Pedro Martinez's 1999 season is absolutely nuts. Adrian Peterson's 2012 season is insane.

But did they have cancer? No? They lose to Lemieux's greatness. Sorry.

Even if you discount the cancer thing, let's imagine Adrian Peterson playing 28% less games - so 11 games, and still leading the league in a significant offensive stat like yards rushed or touchdowns. Or do the same for Pedro in 1999 but for pitching stats. Lemieux did that. Like I said, he didn't get injured, rehab and come back. No, he got injured, got it treated, said fuck rehab, came back the day after his last treatment. That is so mind bogglingly insane, I cannot fathom it ever happening again.

See the problem with putting out names of other athletes as debate points is that it all ends when you learn that Lemieux got cancer in the middle of his season and came back before the season was done. It's not like having an amazing season while healthy or coming off a major layoff due to injury. You can even add Barry Bond's steroid seasons in the mix and it still pales in comparison.

The long and short of it is this.

A guy misses 1/3rd of a season with cancer. Comes back and against all odds wins the scoring race and leads his team to 17 straight wins.

The Buffalo QBs in 1973 had a 1.8 ANY/A (adjusted net yards per passing attempt)

The most pathetic from a guy you are likely to of heard of...

Boston Bruins used to be full of great players and you don't hear their names often. I mean Nifty missed 47 games and still managed to score 22 goals!

Also Babe Ruth accomplished some insane feats. In 1920 he hit more HRs as an individual than all but 1 team in MLB.
