Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

"Publishers can enable you to trade in your games"

How about, if I buy a game it's my property and I'll do what I want with it? Can't do that with Xbox One? No buy, then. Try looking out for your potential customers next time, MS.

When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too.

That part made me laugh. It's only listening for "Xbox On" guys. Everything is cool.

Some victims of classic negotiating tactics here. You set the expectations so low that even a shit result feels like a relief.

How can anyone OK with this?

To those who are OK with this, you sure you read this right? MS basically show massive middle finger to you consumer and you are 'OK'?

I swear if Sony follows the same shit I'm out. Fuck this shit.

I'm not "ok" with it but it also doesn't affect my life very much. Both of my consoles and my pc are connected 24/7, I rarely buy used games and I don't lend games to anyone.

I'm used to Steam.

The only thing about Xbox One that is worse than steam is it's 24 hour internet check.

It's still not an ideal future for video games though.

The problem is the price. Steam is ridiculously cheap, XBL is not. I could probably get six AAA games on steam for the price of one comparable AAA game on XBL.
I wouldn't mind strict DRM if it means buying a game for $15 four months after release, I do mind paying $40 or more for up to a year after release.

This actually sounds worse than before. Now publishers can completely deny you selling your used games, even at 'participating' retailers? Yeah, say goodbye to used games.

But why would they do this? Publishers and Developers have driven the DRM issue because they want a slice of a massive market. Publishers Blocking 2nd hand sales makes no sense whatsoever.

I suppose I'll just stay out of One threads from here on out because I'm officially, for the first time, rooting for a console to fail. And it's as an adult. You'd have figured that would've happened when I was a kid.

This ranks up their with $599 and Saturn releasing on the day of E3 as the biggest fuck-up of a console launch in history. Words escape me right now.

Share access to your games with everyone inside your home.

Did anyone catch that? I keep reading people say that they can share with 10 family members anywhere but the way it looks to me is that this refers to people using different accounts on the same xbox. Why else would it say inside your home?

So i guess while your system is connected to the internet it will constantly ping the server to keep up permissions, only after 24 hrs after the last ping it will stop working.

Actually one thing is a bit unclear:

Does that mean that 10 accounts have access to one library, or that ten systems have access to one account?

Sounds to me that there will be a pool of up to ten accounts, and you can't be a part of more than one pool. They won't really be able to tell if they're family members or not I'd guess, but realistically they can make it hard enough to get in a group and eliminate the ability to join more than one group ever that people wouldn't do it. You probably can't play the game at the same time either or something.

It is a neat feature for families and very close friends though, and is a plus of the cloud model.

My head hurts trying to understand this.

What is the average non gaf-gamer going to think?

How on Earth is the general public going to be able to make sense of this?
I can only imagine their hope is that the "general public" won't even know any of this.

Important stuff that I gathered:

24 hour check-in required. If you bring a game to play at your friend's house, 1 hour check-in is required.

You may give a game to someone who has been on your friends list 30 days. You transfer your rights to them. After this transfer, the game may not be transferred again.

Games can only be traded in at participating retailers, and publishers can choose to not participate. This basically means used games on Amazon, ebay and smaller pawn shops will no longer be available.

No renting. No loaning (unless you are present with the game). No private sales.

Am I correct in all this? If so, I'm shocked that there are people acting like this is okay.

Please don't fuck up, Sony.

It seems fine for me but I can see why others don't like it. The 10 family playing your games is going to be abused really badly. That sounds cool but yet so weird given the other policy they have.

If discs were eliminated period, would the licensing stuff even be cause for concern? Not to beat a dead horse but I can't trade, loan or sell my Steam games, right? Or my iOS games? I've never had an issue with that. If I opted to buy digital on day one vs. physical media, what's the issue?

The only good thing i read was the ability to share games with up to 10 people instantly. i'm sure there's something else behind this, but it's the only thing i saw that was not a negative

24 hour check-in confirmed. I'm not buying it.

If Microsoft somehow disappeared, as could happen with such choices like this, the console would then be a very expensive paperweight. For a guy that still has his SNES when I was 4, and still enjoys using it, imagining that in 20 years from now, the hardware can be intact but not the servers just infuriates me to no end.

I'll skip.

bish gets all the credit :)
I am utterly flabbergasted at where this has all ended up at. Shrinking your market is not a good plan.

Umm, this sounds pretty amazing to me.

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

This right here is how I will let people borrow my games, only it sounds to me like I'll also be able to play my own games at the same exact time as up to 10 of my friends and family are. This is fucking amazing, if true. Microsoft needs to be asked about this for clarification pronto!!!

My biggest concern about used games (which I don't buy) was being able to let friends or family borrow and play my games, and it sounds like that's completely addressed with this system. I'm a happy camper. There is only a restriction if you plan on giving someone your physical game disc. They have to be on your friends list for at least 30 days, and each game disc can only be given once. Microsoft also needs to be asked about this specific part here. Are they saying that they original giver of the game disc can not receive the game disc back from the friend they gave it to? Or are they saying that the original owner can only ever give their physical game disc to one person ever, but that the original giver of the game disc should also be able to receive that game disc back and have it work with no issues?

Congrats MS, you've made a console for Scumbag Steve.

Scumbag Steve can't afford this. They've made a console for upper-middle class American homeowners with broadband internet and cable TV, a lot like most of the people who work at Microsoft.

Just so many strings attached to everything. The bit about leaving it up to publishers really does not fill me with confidence. Does any one actually think that EA won't immediately disable the transfer of Xbone game licences now that they've been given that option? Ugh.

All they needed 2 do is say YES their is a 24 hour reset period, BUT it's not a big deal because we have a APP that y ou can use on tablet's or phone, that lets you reactivate it very easily.

and just like that, 99% of the hate is gone.

That's great for you, and the XB One sales will reflect the same percentage of the overall demographic you take up.

I'm just saying why it doesn't bother me. I'm not saying that people should not be perturbed. The will voice their disapproval the harshest way you can in the market, abstaining from buying the thing.

All I'm saying it that these ''measures'' don't affect me in the slightest.

It'll be real fun once your internet connection drops for over 24 hours locking you out of all your games.

I have smartphone if I need to reauthenticate. Plus I can then catch up on my other consoles. I'd be fine. I haven't had my connection drop for more than 24 hours in 8 years, however.

You act as those Sony employees may have say in this matter. I have no idea, but these types of things are rarely in a vacuum. Industries tend to follow practices.

regardless, I don't think any employee would have said ANYTHING, least of all anything to lead fans to believe one thing was possible when they were planning on another.

not necessarily - there are usually 'trail blazers' that try stuff out first. I think this will be MS' cross to bear, for better or worse.

So considering I trade in and buy 75% (reduced cost) of my games, can I finally put this to bed and say with Xbone that isn't going to happen like it used to?

Well, uh, this actually sounds pretty good, for the most part.

But I do have three points I think are worth mentioning:

What. Like... once to a PERSON, or once, period?

I have a huge problem with this.

THIS

IS UNACCEPTABLE

Flat-out, 100%, unacceptable.

If I buy a game, I expect to be able to resell it at will. If I want to resell it on ebay or Amazon, I should be able to do that, and make, y'know, $20-30 off a game I sell, rather than the $5 or whatever that Amazon or Gamestop would offer. Also, this seems to screw over smaller retail chains I buy used games from that aren't gamestop.

This is exactly how I feel, especially as retailers already offer woeful deals for trade-ins. I want to be able to sell privately.

I hope Sony do differently. I'm not sure if I want to go next-gen at this point. More power to those who find these changes acceptable - I don't.

I think most of things are a big no-no for Sony, i.e. DRM and Alway-online, but this game sharing this is getting me worried

You can't sell to people you don't know (ie. selling a game used w/o going through retail channels approved by MS)
Effectively prevents private sales and kills the possibility of a bona fide used game market in any form.
You can't sell it privately. It forces people to sell at 'participating retailers'.
So sneaky... I didn't catch it at face value.

It looks like some very important pubs who made lot of money for MS have them by their balls.
