Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Jaffe's already coming up with strategies:

4G4IPAf.png

Holy shit, of course. This is DEFINITELY going to happen.

.With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Fuck You MS...

All they needed 2 do is say YES their is a 24 hour reset period, BUT it's not a big deal because we have a APP that y ou can use on tablet's or phone, that lets you reactivate it very easily.

and just like that, 99% of the hate is gone.

Or how about this idea: you can play offline for however long you want

This sounds fine. Reasonable and if the family stuff is true nice silver lining. Interested to see what the cloud saved games mean. They make it sound like redownloading them is not required if so that is baller.

"We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers"

So, in effect, you want your consumers to buy a machine that will cost hundreds and an Online subscription only to tell them that the games they buy give them no right to sell them to whomever they want for how ever much they choose? And then block them from playing these games without an online connection but - and this is the funny part - allow them to watch movies and TV without an online connection?

One question:

Why would I give you hundreds to choose when I play and who can play my games? How about I just give you some cash to smack me in the face whenever you like?

How about a No to you and Xbox One?

"You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time."

They could just say any of your family members. Or all. Only one of the ten family members can. That needs clearing up in the OP. not all ten at the same time or any time.

I have a reliable connection.

I don't buy used.

I don't sell my games.

Games being designed to do some of the calculations with cloud like Simcity did should concern you as those servers WILL eventually be reassigned to other games or shut down and you will no longer be able to play them. Even though very little of Simcity was calculated with cloud it was just enough to serve as a clever form of DRM and will also render the game useless once EA shuts down servers. This imo is what people should be concerned about.

This cloud crap is being sold as something special when it is just DRM at least it was with Simcity because modders found that the entire game was being handled locally on your pc with the exception of a few minor things.

Q for all gaf members!: Would you support a system licensed by microsoft that lets you RENT GAMES digitally from their servers for 10$ a week.

Just like blockbuster or rogers.

SO you can buy the games you love, and rent the games you wanna try out?.

I think it would be brilliant.

Any more opinions? I think this could be the future of rental services, Would love to be able to just log on and rent a game (say forza) for a week, and try it out. Or platform games which are usually around 10 hours or so.

I can't support this. It's a real shame because I loved what Microsoft did with the 360 and some of the One games look awesome but this is a bunch of bullshit.

I feel really sorry for those who don't have broadband and/or rely on used games. Microsoft just told you to get fucked.

I would be clapping so hard if Sony just flat out states in their conference: "If you buy the disc, it's yours to keep, lend, or sell to anyone or any store."

But I have a feeling they'll have a similar policy to this, but entirely up to the publisher and without the online check-in BS.

Remember when so many people praised Sony for giving publishers the choice to block used games? So now Microsoft says that they're doing that and it's a problem. Funny how that works.

not everyone likes that method anyways but i understand what you mean. its not across the board we (including myself) speculated.

The problem here is that EA and MS are doing the DRM thing. I'm finding it pretty hard to believe that EA would release a game on Xbox One that has DRM and release it on PS4 without DRM.

The thing is, PS3 right now allows individual publishers to decide what DRM they want to use. PS4 will be exactly the same. Sure, some will do it, but that just gives the consumers the ability to deny publishers sales at the game-by-game basis, which is a highly effective way of sending a message.

There's no way I can read fast enough (or have enough time) to keep up with this thread, but I just wanted to express how depressing I find this, and also I'm going to be lying awake tonight wondering just how people can post positive things about this, it defies belief, wake up you cunts, the companies are not your friends!

Holy shit so if you're at a friends house you can only play the game for a fucking hour?

What the fuck? Fuck you MS. That's just ridiculous. Holy shit.
You can play the game as long as you want if he has an Internet connection. It just does an online check every hour.

Regardless, I can't believe how few GAFers have Internet.

I'm amazed at the people who think they'll be able to designate their friends as "family". I bet that the other person will have to have the same billing address or maybe the same last name in order to qualify as a family.

It could be that you create dummy accounts that can't buy/sell and just play games. Plus the could restrict you from doing this:

-----------
XBone 1
MainAccount A
DummyAccountFromB

-----------
XBone 2
MainAccountB
DummyAccountFromA

The moment you try to do that, the servers tell you : NOPE we detected a relation in your account setups. something like that would block sharing games with other friends

It's happening.

It seems that they have cleared some of the issues up and listened to the gaming feedback. There are still some stuff that are still unclear yet (e.g every 24 hour connection).

Also does this mean that individual private selling is out of the question. (Assuming Microsoft allows for some sort of online trading system with friends?)

Listened to the gaming feedback? How do you know this wasn't already the plan all along? People posted rumor threads and everyone, including myself, got bent out of shape over what....rumor threads. And then people demanded answers cause joeblow insider on neogaf had unconfirmed info.

The family thing sounds so exploitable, I can basically have 10 friends who can log-in have access to my games at any time?

Then why the hell are there used game restrictions and 24h online checks? People will abuse this wholesale.

Only one person can access any one game at a time. I bet if the second person tries to access a game in use, it'll say it's in use. It would be like passing the disc around. So no, not really exploitable. In fact kinda cool. My brother and I exchange games all the time to try out. This would mean both him and I would have access to each other's library at any given time and no need to drive to the other person's house to give them the disc.

Someone can't read. It's an hour before it has to check online to validate. It's not that you can only play for an hour.

Ah, so the Xbox One is officially fucking abysmal. Well, at least I didn't have to wait til E3 to hope that I had to still care about its game library.

See you next gen Microsoft, hope you're not a bag of cunts then

This. How you can read that news and not be like wtf! is beyond me. Yay they are Enabling us and Allowing us to do things we could already do with less restrictions before! Fucking Cunts is right... looks like I will be PS4U and PC this Gen.

Why is everyone ignoring the family member thing? Who gives a fuck that you can't lend games when you can let "family members" winkwink, play it? Am I missing something?

I'm guessing the whole family thing is you can add 10 people, but you cannot remove them for a period of time.
So you can't just cycle in and out new friends that can access your library.

We need some clarification about the family sharing thing, the wording is quite vague and a little bit misleading.

Let's take a look;
- Up to 10 members of your family - how does Microsoft know which are our 'family' - does this mean only accounts originally registered on the same console as the shared library?
- And 'any one of' - so including yourself, only one other person can access your shared library at any given time?
- There is no indication that you can both play the same game at any given time.

No I'm sure you cannot play the same game at the same time.
You only own one copy, your "family" just 'borrows' it.

Hmm? Why would they allow a trade-in if you couldn't buy it as a used product? Why would any retailer pay for it?

In this case the retailers are basically brick-and-mortar license revokers. There will probably be some cellphone-like system where they log in to live, check your account, and can revoke a license from your account. You get a credit for your game to spend on a brand new game. Not another used game.

What in the world do they mean by "access to your shared library from any xbox"?

If I went to a friend's house and wanted to access my game library on his xbone, wouldn't I need to also bring my entire library of discs over and install every game onto his hard drive, taking up space?

Or would I need to call in advance some hours/days before going over? "Hey man, could you download a few of my 20GB games onto your xbone from the store before I come over so I can access my library?"

Or does MS already have a gaikai-like streaming service/technology already implemented and ready to go?

Games are developed in such a way that they download while you play. Supposedly being able to play instantly.

Right, the "shared games library" probably has to be designated by you (and allowed by the publisher). Probably can't play the same game on two machines.

Even though I don't buy many used games these days, I do like having the option so that is hugely disappointing. I also hate that you have to log-in every 24 hours to authenticate. There should be a dedicated offline mode that lets you stay disconnected for at least a couple of weeks. Lastly, the sharing with 10 family/friends stuff sounds far too good to be true.

Highlights (lowlights?):

No renting, no loaning. No private sales (unless selling to someone who has been on your friends list for 30 days)

Console Checks in Every 24 hours

Trade-ins are up to the publisher and only at participating retailers

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

Ok fuck this console.

Why are people getting so knotted up about this? It is basically Steam but with stricter online requirements (24 hour check) and the ability to actually trade your games. We've been doing this for years now, welcome to the digital age people.

Sorry, but no. This means I'm out. Pisses me off, too, because I loved the 360. GREAT console.

And when the casuals realize what's happening with all of this, they're out, too. That's WAY too many hoops to jump through for game-sharing and "lending."

If Sony chooses this route, I'm going to save a lot of money next gen.

Or maybe it's time for a good PC ...

Its pretty clear. One at any given time.

lol the fuck? Did they just list anyone can play your games on your console as a feature? hahaha oh microsoft how silly you are

And Cliff go back to making your generic brown shooters, no one overreacted over shit. This is pretty much in line with what was expected.
