Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

What exactly is a 'platform fee'?

It's a bit strange to use an adjective, if he actually meant that no fee would be charged to a publisher, retailer or consumer.

I think that not everyone has realized that Microsoft's form of always online DRM means that you (the consumer) never own your Xbone or any of the games your purchase.

Your Xbone and purchased games (whether in physical or digital form) are pure rentals and can be revoked by Microsoft at anytime for any reason. Please read the fine print in the Xbone EULA/TOS when it launches. When you do, you will see that Microsoft reserves the right to deactivate your Xbone and cancel your Live account at anytime for any reason.

Because you don't own your Xbone or your games, Microsoft gets to control how and when you can use the device.

Some example scenarios of how Xbone could work:
1) 5 years from now Microsoft launches Xbox Two and announces that they will continue service for Xbone for 3 more years. So in 2021 (8 years from now) your Xbone automatically becomes a paperweight and no longer plays games unless you upgrade to Xbox Two.

2) EA Launches FIFA 14 on Nov 1, 2013. You buy it. On Nov. 1, 2014 EA launches FIFA 15. Your copy of FIFA 14 automatically deactivates on Nov. 1, 2014, unless you buy FIFA 15.

Since Microsoft can remotely deactivate your Xbone at any time, the sky is the limit on what they might come up with in the future. And they can apply stuff retroactively, without any issues, since you clicked "ACCEPT" on the EULA/TOS.

Goddamn, Microsoft. I can't say I'm surprised but it's incredible to actually see it come to fruition. I sincerely hope PS4 and Wii U wipe the floor with them this gen.

I must admit these details have made me feel much better about spending the last hour shopping for old Dreamcast stuff.

Wow. Holy shit. They actually found words to confuse people. hahahahahaha. Microsoft really has the best marketing people in the business.

Yeah, that is one area that M$ floors the competition in.

Their marketing people can actually convince you that features detrimental to consumer right are a good thing.

Their marketing team could probably sell arsenic as a Soda.

Man, I'm fine with everything but the restrictions on trade-ins. Let me guess, I can trade Madden 14 in only to EA and only to put toward the purchase of Madden 15? Yay...

The only way this would be nice is if we get Steam-like pricing. Yes, I know that's a pipe dream.

Correct me if I'm wrong, if I understood above, this is not possible with Xbox One:

- A and B are friends
- A has two consoles.
- A and B have same game
- B is visiting A, would like to bring just disc (not the big console) so they can play
- But they can play only for one hour because B is not logged on his primary console...unless B decides to carry along big box.

B logs in to any console he wants, plays any disc he owns, problem solved.

When the library grows enough, I can see this not being an issue with well organized gamesharing groups.

I agree. I bet they're banking on the fact that you'll want to play with your friends for multiplayer and thus this won't be a solution for that.

Honestly, as much shit as there is in these new policies, the 10 person white list of sharing a library is the one true perk that came out of all of this IMO. Once you understand what you can and can't do, it's actually kind of nice.

A console that needs to connect to the internet every 24 hours in order to play games is essentially always online.

Just wait for all the 'cloud' games - then the 24 hour check-in will be like a dream scenario.

Bone is a mess, tbh.

Essentially is not the same as actually. I agree that every 24 hours may as well be "always-online" but it is not actually "always-online". The point being that Sony can say the PS4 is not "always-online" and still implement an identical system.

Would make sense. If you take your copy of Forza to your friends house your brother also can't play any Forza during that time.

You can't play any game during that time.

You do not lend your game. You go to your friend with your account and you can play with him on your account. When you go to home he won't be able to play that game if you log into your account @ home.

That is how it was described earlier by MS exec

My brother and I shall enjoy this, providing there is no caveats that I am missing. Would be nice for Steam to get a similar feature.

I thought about my brother as well. So the family share thing means that if my brother, let's say, bought AC4, but I didn't, I could digitally play his game? Even if you can't play at the same time. I could see getting use out of that. "Bro, I beat it, play whenever you want."

Pretty much every rumor came true, and I'm not a fan of it, but I will say that at least there's one thing that wasn't a negative.

As far as the bad stuff I can say that my internet is usually okay, but my modem or router has been iffy, and I've been off and on for the past week. That 24hr thing is obviously gonna be a pain from time to time. The whole trade/used issue is a bummer too. I don't trade-in, but this sounds like a lot less used games at good proces will be out there. And I like having that as an option when there's no "big" new game out. I could see buying less games next time because of that.

So has there been any statements or even non-statements about microsoft's commitment to keeping xbox one servers up and running as long as microsoft stays in business, like how Valve has promised with steam? Because that's still the number one issue for me.

As for the family thing, I bet you can set up one master account, and then add up to 9 sub accounts onto that main account which has access to the main accounts games (probably including parental settings like ability to purchase, trade in, play m rated games ext.). Then only two accounts inside that ecosystem can probably be logged in at the same exact time.

Basically its like sharing your Steam or Netflix or Hulu+ account, except with a little more customization on a profile basis and you get 2 connections at a time instead of just one.

No, it absolutely doesn't.

Why mention at a friend's house if it has to be in your own home? This is wherever they are, which I think is pretty fucking awesome.

You and your brother share one Xbone as a primary console for your accounts. Each of you can go to a friend's house and play any of your games. But only one at one time. The friend can't.

What happens to all the college students who can't play Xbox One because their college blocks Xbox Live access their in dorms (really common for college's to do). You know, the audience MS is targeting...

MS is drunk at the wheel.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Welp, I won't be buying this then.

If the PS4 is the same, I won't be buying it either.

I've spent too much money and too much time in this hobby to be treated better than pirates/thieves by the people and companies on which I've spent all this money and time. I own what I buy legally, and can do what I want with it within reason. I'm not going to concede that ability to anyone for yet another Halo/Gears/Madden/Call of Duty/licensed movie game or whatever dull blue-and-brown crap I'm supposed to happily swallow for $70 and 10 hours.

There are lots of physical things you can't resell, the PC gaming world has dealt with that for a long time now. Does Gamestop accept my Crysis 3 PC disc for trade in?

PC games now a days are like 50% cheaper than consoles....on DAY fucking ONE. (Bioshock infinite was like $25 last time I saw, maybe even lower day1)

When I can get Bioshock 1 & 2 for $5, I dont give no fucks if I cant resell it. (I actually paid $5 for those two games plus Duke 3D so 3 games for $5 ha!)

PC digital distribution >>>>>>>>> Console DD. Simple as that. No comparisons. So when MS forces DD on their console, this shit is bad because prices wont be this cheap. Never in the next 5-10 years will you get HALO 5 XB1 digital version for $5 on Xbox market place. I can guarantee that.

This seriously sounds like a joke. I can't believe how anti-consumer this console is.

Essentially they are saying: "So, buy the system, and we'll give you the opportunity to play games for as long as we decide to have the servers up and running, but don't even think about lending a game to a friend, it just won't play unless he buys it again."

I hope gamers don't forget how shitty those policies are just to play the new Gears, Halo etc.
If the "console" is successful, i expect all the DRM nonsense to become the norm, and get even worse in the future.

The sad part is, the average Xbox gamer does not know what is going to hit them. I tried to explain it to friends and family that don't follow the tech and they look at me like am crazy. Oh well I tried.

Do not know in the U.S. or other places but here in Mexico 360 piracy is big. you can find in the street people selling tons of games and haking consoles....

I am not blaming Piracy but its a factor that pushed Microsoft to make most of the current changes...

And before piracy it was rental games, and after piracy it was used games. The reality is the problem is the huge budgets that these publishers piss away and come back with unrealistic expectations of how their game should do. Piracy is a drop in the water compared to how big the publishers are messing up. They just want a scapegoat and they'll screw over honest consumers on the way to get it.

The sad part is, the average Xbox gamer does not know what is going to hit them. I tried to explain it to friends and family that don't follow the tech and they look at me like am crazy. Oh well I tried.

Try to explain it like this. Just examine how they use their console now, like lending games, selling on ebay, being able to play offline. Then just keep saying nope, no, nope. They'll get the hint pretty quickly after they say how it would be ridiculous for a company to even attempt it. Now you can link them directly to Microsoft's page proving your point for you. They'll soon see the light shortly after it. I pretty much did this recently over some coffee with some friends at a local shop and their reaction went from hype to sadness, exactly how I felt. We love our halo, even still play halo 4 every night but now we're all looking at PS4's.

I'm sure it's like having 5 favorite friends on your phone contract that you can call at any time without being charged minutes.

These are 10 people that can see and play your games at all times.

The writing is a bit misleading. What it appears to suggest is that actually only one of those ten people can access the shared games along with yourself at any given time, and you can't play the same game at the same time either.

So I guess private sales are still somehow possible? What a mess.

key phrase: to a friend

has to be on your friends list for 30 days, it's in the PR. don't expect any other kind of private transactions w/o going through a big box retailer though

Hey assholes, don't spoil Game of Thrones for other people. C'mon.

It might work if A's home console is still turned on and connected. But I suppose it'd have to get around the account issue. Maybe.

Sometimes I wish Nintendo was more snarky and mean. They could easily jump on this and make some brilliant marketing. And if Sony doesn't follow suit.... I expect a blood bath.

All of this: Woooooooooooooooooow. They've got balls, is all I can say. (Too bad for libraries, GameFly, eBay, people in rural areas, people that don't like setting game consoles up to the Internet, our rights in general....)
