Any reason to think Final Fantasy XV won't disappoint?

Even if the story ends up bad or boring (doubt it though) as long as they create to make a big world with fun combat (which seems probable) and it has good music (it's Yoko Shimomura so yeah...) it'll be good at the very least for me.

which is stupid since every FF changes its gameplay every single game

I appreciate that but I guess I just need to accept that turn based is dead because this is too similar to picking Singularity with Liara before letting her go back to doing her own thing and playing the game for you.

Just like with the modern/sci-fi asthetics of this and XIII, it's too big of a change. I've said before that I don't mind that change, but not as a replacement of the reason I fell in love with the series in the first place. We all know that SE has enough resources to satisfy both the new and old FF fan at the same time. It's sad that they choose not to.

Once again, just because this game is not doing a turn based system does not mean that the next FF won't use it or at least some new variation of turn-based. Additionally, Ito hasn't done an FF in some time so there's the chance he could be doing XVI. And he's the guy that invented most of the battle systems used in FF.

You haven't played some of the older games then I take it? Because there were sci-fi elements in a lot of those such as VI, VII, VIII, and XII with the various technologies they displayed. The modern look with part of XV is a bit new, but appears to be unique to the city the main character hails from.

At this point I'm tired of games that fall flat in one portion of them or another. What I mean is, I'm tired of games having decent gameplay but terrible stories - or good stories and terrible gameplay. Is it wrong to want all pillars of a game to support it equally?

Square-Enix being behind it is enough of a reason to expect disappointment. I'd love for it turn out well but the company is pretty fucked. We'll just have to see.

It already has by not releasing on PS3/360. Sure I'll buy it, but when the PS4 is much cheaper than $400, so I got more years to wait, when I already waited years for it to come out on PS3.

To put it simply: No.

Expectations for Versus XIII were above the roof. Now that they changed the name and made it a mainline FF it will probably only get worse. And this is only playing with expectations, not to mention Square Enix is, until proven wrong, not the same company it was on the SNES/PSX era.

I'm saying that, but I'm buying Lighting Returns... So...

I'd actually say that my expectations have went down considerably given the current state of squareenix.

Just looking at it spells disappointment for me. And the fact that the character design is done by Nomura once again.

I'm usually fine with good gameplay + music (and good aesthetics matters too I guess) and that makes a game "good enough" for me. Actually might even make a game great. But the truly exceptional ones are good all-around so I'd like for this game to be that good.

I find the latter to be the more frustrating of the two myself. I can deal with a bad or mediocre story if the game is fun to play, but sometimes if the gameplay is just really bad I just feel the need to go and watch the story on Youtube.

It really is tiresome to see games that fall flat in one of those areas. Feels like we don't get too many that manage to capture both these days.

Apparently yes.

You know they already said this is probably a one-off thing and turn-based combat is not out of the equation for future games, right?

One mainline FF going ARPG is not the end of the world, it's literally one game going ARPG. And if someone can pull it off it's Nomura.
FF hasn't been turn based since FFX. It's gone for good.

Everything we've seen of it recently looks awesome. The battle system looks like it'll be a lot of fun. Also I liked XIII, I just think it's overstayed its welcome with the spin-offs.

Story looks better than XIII stuff. That's not really why I play these games though.

What if XVI ends up worse? What are you going to do then? Are you going to wait for XVII? Did you ever think about that?! That's right. Didn't think so.

I sort of wonder if we'll ever get to some ridiculous number for FF, though I sort of expect SE to bankrupt or another crash before we get that far.

It definitely has high expectations. Feels like several might be disappointed if it's not one of the best games ever made, even if it ends up a step up from the XIII series in the public eye.

It may not live up to the hype, but I think at worst it will be a very solid game with very fun combat. Like Verendus said, they've had enough pre-production time and Nomura and his team has a clear enough vision of what they want the game to be that this game should be able to avoid the biggest troubles XIII faced.

I have faith in Nomura that he won't ship a game that plays poorly, and I have faith in Nojima+Nomura to create a story that is, at the very least, understandable. Shimomura has never made an OST that I didn't think was brilliant, and what I've heard of XV seems to continue that trend.

It should be a very noticeable improvement over Squares past-gen output. I do think a lot of people will write it off simply because of association at this point, though.

I have high expectations for this game.

loving the ps3 interface and the controls are so ergonomic.

however, what may disappointing is that there may be nothing to do after the initial month for hardcore players (look at tera).

still good game. cant wait for trophies

I think if you go into it expecting a very cinematic linear actiony Final Fantasy then you will probably enjoy it. If you expect a deep RPG with lots of sidequests you will be extremely disappointed.

It could dissapoint, but I think most will be happy with anything that's better than XIII.

Personally I welcome the action-oriented combat. The teleporting and weapon changing all looks really fun. Like many have said ill be happy with a cool world and fun combat. If the story is awesome then that's just the cherry on top.

You're thinking of XIV.

There are some linear segments but it has an open world too.

I'm not too worried about side content considering recent Nomura games as well as it being a mainline FF game (needs a bunch of side content) but I just want to know what they'll have.

The only thing I worried about really is the story and the characters. I'm don't need either to be out of this world good, just not terrible and distracting like XIII. Oh, and a stronger narrative too, no more of leaving all the important details out of the story and putting them is some log you have to read in the menu like XIII.

Looking at KH2: Final Mix, the side content should be pretty fantastic, too.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
The most common problems of the FF nowadays are the existence of annoying/useless characters and the story can be a hit or miss to the people, so I'm expecting this.

I think it'll be good. They sent out a sacrificial lamb (ff13) and hopefully learned how NOT to make an rpg. Whether it'll match expectations is another thing all together. The game has lived in people's imaginations for so long, reality may disappoint, no matter how great it actually is.

Fortunately, FFXIV is not like this.

I don't think this applies to MMOs (and I've never played an FF MMO). :p

The vanilla FFXIV was terrible due to the overall structure... How did ARR change though? Does it have a good story and presumably good NPCs?

It hasn't been in continuous development. Development didn't start in earnest until mid 2011.

That's the next-gen version though. Did they actually say they scrapped all the assets from Versus when they started XV? They were still making a current-gen version until last year.

I still think this is mostly the game they've been developing since 2006, but upgraded to new hardware with the original version cancelled. Then again, we never got to play Versus, so we have no idea how good or bad that might've been.

Unlike most people I enjoyed 13 and what I played of 13-2.

But for those who hated those games I have two reasons why it could potentially not live up to expectations. 13 and 13-2
