Oh god, them free games look brilliant. I knew Badland is going to be free at some stage but I bought it for the full price.

I already told all my friends to get them freebies, hope there will be more gems coming!

By the way, have anyone heard about this:

https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/iesabel/id666232910?mt=8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp9NYs2o2u8&feature=player_embedded

It looks very promising and it's got some nice features (up to 8 player cross platform multi), I would love to see Torchlight on iOS...

Downloaded Iesabel, will try it out after work.

Another funky title that is out today, for free, is Kavinsky.

http://kavinsky.recordmakers.com/

'Outrun' album producer Kavinsky introduces the first ever video game based on a record.

Defeat foul villains and shady night creatures as you wander in the mean streets of Downtown LA. Your favorite Kavinsky records provide the soundtrack for your ride.

Mighty martial arts moves, deadly weapons, and the perfect soundtrack are just a click away! Grab it so you can take Kavinsky, his story, and his dreaded foes with you anywhere you go.

It’s music history in a video game, now available on all portable platforms and devices.

This looks really really good. What's the catch? :p

Will get it as soon as I beat KOTOR. I'm up to the Malak fight and it's such bullshit that I'm tempted just to delete the game and pretend I beat it. I'm 99% of the way there as it is, all I'm missing is the happy ending video at the end...

If LYING to yourself will make you sleep at night, sure, you "finished" the game. :p

Yeah, Malak is a BS fight. Apply hit and run tactics you haven't done already. You might want to develop saber throw.

I'll give it another half an hour of losing before I give up. Too late to develop any new powers though, I'm in the fight with no backup saves and not much to grind on (unless the jedis I was fighting earlier are never ending?).

I really hate boss fights, so cheap and dumb. The thrill should come from the drama of the moment, not just chipping away at a massive health bar.

Well balanced boss fights are awesome, but when they are cheap, boy is it frustrating. The thing with Malak is that it's not a very hard fight IF you know what to do before, if you know what powers to develop, etc. Problem is, most first timers won't know that, and they shouldn't know. It's just a poorly designed fight. It's not memorable or particularly exciting in any way, which is a shame considering it's such a fantastic game.

Yesterday afternoon I thought to myself 'I should probably reinstall Grand Prix Story, I never really bothered with it after the first ten minutes'. Boy, was that a mistake. I haven't stopped playing it since.

Reading that thing reminded me of how great Groove Coaster Zero is, in that regard.
The game's free to play and you get new songs as you level up (and there are a lot of songs). There's also premium songs you gotta buy with real money (no fake currency), but they let you try one of them once a day, if you like it you can purchase it and if you don't you can just keep on playing the free songs.
It does have some social hooks and stuff like that, but all in all it's a lot better than most other free to play games on iOS.

Groove Zero actually -did- start out with virtual currency but transitioned to a pure real money system a few months after launch; people with coin balances can still use them, though it's impossible to replenish at this point. I'm actually a bit concerned about the song purchases I made under the old system because I'm basically trusting the app (or their servers, if it's server side) to keep track of what I purchased with coins before the current songpack system.

Played some Iesabel.

It's a seemingly full featured hack n slash Diablo type game.

This feels like a Gameloft game. Now hold up, without the shitty Gameloft game mechanics. No IAPs, no F2P shit, but with Gameloft's graphical capabilities. That and more features like cross play/Internet p2p hosting.

Only 2 classes so far, wiz and barbarian. Monthly updates planned.

I'm impressed.

Going to grab it tonight, does it have touch to move? Dev seems active on the TA forum also which is a good sign.

Do you have Badland? That's my personal favorite of all the games that just went free.

Controls - tap to move/free flowing joystick on left side of the screen, along with action buttons on right side.

General impressions for Iesabel so far;

It's a seemingly full featured hack-n-slash loot game. Singleplayer in 3 acts, but only 1 act available atm, act 2 comes next month in an update. Cross-platform (with Win/Android/Mac) Multiplayer up to 8 players, P2P hosted w/ text chat.
Quite a bit of options available, UI size, graphics features, zoom levels, etc. Text on the small side but readable on iPhone, iPad is better.
Only 2 classes so far, Witch and Barbarian. Character skills seems deep with 3 specc trees, though one I think is for professions. You can load up your singleplayer character in multiplayer and vice versa.

This feels like a Gameloft game. Now hold up, without the shitty Gameloft game mechanics. No IAPs, no F2P shit, but with Gameloft's graphical capabilities. That and more features like cross play/Internet p2p hosting.

All that for $1.99 and it's universal? I'm impressed.

By the way, I just completed the NightJar.
It was an incredible and unique experience, I really recommend it, especially if you are an Alien fan.
Great twist in the end, loved every death (and we are talking about a huge number here).

Levels vary between dumb easy to incredibly hard, but they are always very atmospheric.
In some levels, the harder ones, you really appreciate the sound engine and realize you are really free to move around in a real room like with a FPS (a pair of levels especially, where you have to walk around some objects).

There should be more of these kind of titles...possibilities are endless if well planned and done (a fantasy setting where you have to steal a gem from a dragon cave?).

I really hope for a Nightjar sequel.

Rolling credits on KOTOR, aww yeah boy! That tip about being able to use medkits from the menu saved me, made the fight tolerable at least. Was a damn fun game after the fairly tedious beginnings, although after 15 hours or so you can tell it's fairly shallow, both with the RPG talky bits and the combat itself. IMO Baldur's Gate was a lot more fun to play moment to moment. Still, it was a good ride and I'm glad I played it. And now I'm even gladder to free up all that space on my iPad! Yay games binge, I'm going to the OP now.

A little off topic, but I wonder what they plan to do with the iCade when the controller API hits. Would it be a good idea to wait to see if they release an updated version? I don't see anything that can easily be done to make the current iCade compatible.

Tried Iesabel, looks solid, but I think I'll wait for a few updates before I play through it.

According to the app description, they're planning to increase the price once they release the next chapter/update. Previous owners will get it for free.

I still can't believe this thing has no IAPs.

Sorry for the plug, but just wanted to mention that a game I've been working on together with some friends has finally been released for iPad and iPhone: Swords & Arrows
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swords-arrows/id560917620?ls=1&mt=8

It's basically like a medieval take on Advance Wars, ie turn-based strategy. You have a bunch of different units that you can purchase and upgrade with new abilities, and it's multiplayer only for up to 6 players (online too, of course).
We've been polishing and testing it a lot these past months and it's awesome to finally be able to release it to the world! There's also a map editor included, so you can create and share your own maps, and the game has full Game Center support, achievements etc.

Also, the game is free, so I hope you try it out at least! :)

Nice, reminds me of Shining Force. Will give it a try when I get home

Sorry guys but I just couldn't get into Sworcery. Great music but I'm just not feeling this one, put it down after about 10 minutes. Bandland on the other hands is genius, I'm loving it. The music, atmosphere, puzzle solving...it's sublime. My only gripe is that there's no tutorial, I was furiously tapping at the screen my first 20 minutes until I released you just hold your finger on the screen to go up.

This looks really awesome. Downloaded and am trying it out. Anything with async multiplayer gets a try in my book - plus I noticed that you named and modeled one of your maps after Crescent Isle (I'm a big AW fan!). :) It looks well done and plays pretty intuitively, given my very unscientific 5 minute glance. My GC name is Viscera Eyes if anyone wants to play.

A quick Q: I tried a Quick Game and I think I'm in a 4-player game but there's only one other person filled in, along with 2 "Waiting for Opponent" slots. How long does the game wait to fill those slots?

So I picked up Iesabel:

Seems ok, bit janky and needs some bug fixes (says Witch even though I am a Barbarian), seems to have no touch to move which is a shame but the stick is free floating, not auto attack either as far as I can tell.

Looking forward to updates / fixes.

Really sorry for the late reply (just woke up), but your problem is probably related to the game just being released, so there simply weren't many players online. Hopefully it's a bit easier to get into a game now. And thanks for the nice words, I'll pass them on to the rest of the team. :)

This looks awesome.
I just downloaded it and first impression is really good...a fantasy version of Uniwar?
I have started a random match, but after taking my turn I'm waiting for others to take theirs...hopefully.
Spreading the word now among my usual async friends.

It seems good but I only really like those games in single player. Need to add some DLC or something because I'd throw a couple of bucks at it (call me stupid if I just missed it).

Did I just join a game with you and Rlan? D:

Actually, I understand.
To see ANYTHING about the game I had to play a pass&play game with myself.
I admit it seems pretty cool...a fantasy and polished version of Uniwar mixed with Wesnoth.
I *LOVE* you can play on iPad on both orientations.

I found just one bug (when you write names on iPad in Pass and Play, you do not see what you are typing).
Other than that seems pretty solid...with many research and units (only time will tell about balance).

BTW, I won :)
