So I gave Clash of Clans a try and before my shield is over I'm already over it. It's just...boring :/

I can never get into these games. All my friends play the Simpsons one.
It doesn't get fun UNTIL your shield is up and you start fighting people and raiding them for resources. Stealing resources and knowing when to upgrade what buildings/units makes it a surprisingly deep experience, and most of the time it matches you against people near your skill level - that way you're normally not put up against people who spend hundreds of dollars on gems (though some of them do purposefully keep their trophy counts low for a while).

I really didn't understand the appeal until I sat down with my friend and he showed me the ropes.

There is another choice besides those choices, by the way.
Nice. I somehow didn't notice the first time but I was suspecting as much because of the
two alpacas who stay hanging around
and then confirmed it from the requisites for the rare evos in the second playthrough menu. I'm close to
killing god
again and I'll see which one I choose.

I just refuse to support any movie tie-in games. They're gross and soulless.

Personally, I'd bend that rule for a shot at cash anywhere up to $250k in a game that didn't cost anything to play.

But good on you for sticking to your blanket principles I guess.

Anyone got recommendations for a F2P card team building / battling game? I'm thinking of something like the management aspect of Fifa Ultimate Team (and not the Big Win games, I've tried those.)

Haha!

Wish devs would keep stuff like that to a minimum. If people aren't responding after the fifth time you point out you have a contest running I think it's pretty safe to assume that no one is interested.

To be fair, the contest is over, and he was just updating us on the results. I think it's pretty amazing how that kid won $250K at 18. This might completely change his life.

Was kind of hoping a GAFfer would be in the mix of finalists, but nobody here seemed to want to try out for it so... oh well :/

It was/is not a very enticing game to play to be perfectly honest, that and the contest being limited to the US. International-GAF is strong in the GAF iOS Gaming Scene™. :)

I won a Starwing (SNES) cash prize competition as a kid so believe me I would participate in these things if they were available to me personally.

I believe it's a combination of the above plus the fact that here on GAF, drumming up excitement about a mobile game (that may or may not be great at first glance), is an excersise equal to rolling a spherical boulder covered in oil up a mountain made out of teflon.

So you have to actually pay people to play your game?

Yes. We gave away $1m in cash because we fear rejection.

A guy that won $25k in the heats sent us a note. He'd lost some financial aid and was going to have to drop out of college in his final year. Winning meant he could finish school, and had enough money to get married to his fiance. He thanked us and asked if we could help source a Turbo cake topper to put on their wedding cake.

It was a good note.

Firefly Online: Cult Hit Series to Get Officially Licensed Multiplayer Online Role - Playing Game

LOS ANGELES — July 17, 2013 — Fox Digital Entertainment (FDE) and QMx Interactive Inc. (QMXi), a developer of mobile games and apps, are heading back to the Verse of the much beloved cult hit TV series Firefly, announcing today the first officially licensed video game, titled Firefly Online. Firefly Online (FFO) is a multi-user, social online role-playing game that will initially be available for smartphones and tablets, includingthose based on iOS and Android operating systems.

Players take on the role of a ship captain as they hire a crew and lead missions, while trading with and competing against millions of other players like themselves. Much like the crew of Serenity, the Firefly - class transport ship featured in the original show, players must do whatever it takes to survive in the Verse: find a crew, find a job and keep flying.

Firefly Online is currently in development by QMXi and Spark Plug Games, an independent video game studio. The game is expected to be released during the summer of 2014.

Made a thread about it here: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=626841

Like Tunesmith; I gave it a quick go and to be honest it didn't grab me at all. Was deleted quite quickly, not my thing but I can see the appreciation.

The competition is/was pointless considering US only; so I wasn't going to win anything one way or the other, so why bother?

You're based in Wellington are you not?

But no, good on the winners and you / your commerical partner for the prizes. $250k at 18 will change your life... or buy you plenty of coke and hookers at least.

Yes. We gave away $1m in cash because we fear rejection.

Come over mine with a $1m in cash and I'll give you cuddles to quell your fear of rejection.

Breach & Clear impressions (I posted this on TA for the benefit of the devs):

First impressions:

1. Music skips a bit when navigating menus, which can be a little laggy as well (iPad Mini), sometimes takes a second to register input.

2. Animations are a little janky.

3. Input in game feels tricky, sometimes it won't register the "hold to set waypoint", I would suggest the option of double tapping to set perhaps?

4. Some of the promised features (clothing etc...) are "coming soon", it seems like content was pulled out or held back but if it's a free update that's fine I guess.

Overall I like whats here, but it feels like there is a ton of potential improvements, for me they would be:

1. Cinematic camera on movements as an option / camera options.
2. Pistols, SMG's and even LMG's, the former two ARE realistic, the latter not so much...
3. International squads (I know this is due down the line).

FuturidiumEP is pretty cool. A good tribute to Uridium. Pretty tough though. You appear to unlock credits to continue as you play through & there is a single level select for practice as well. Only got it this morning, but I keep picking up my iphone for one more try.

Game has a really neat look with a kinda CYK bleed around the edges of the textures, a bit like Teleglitch.

Breach & Clear on the other hand. Hrrm. Maybe it'd suit iPad better than my 4s, but the buttons are tiny. I can't find a way to just cancel all waypoints if you screw up, meaning you have to hunt the particular waypoint you want to change in a spaghetti of waypoint markers.

They changed it from Freemium to premium apparently whilst developing. The IAP stuff is all still in there but apparently only for "extremely impatient players", but it still seems like a game with 15 missions that you grind to get better gear & play again whilst bumping the difficulty up. It looks geared towards IAP and the grind. Devs say it isn't now, and sure, that might be the case, but what've they replaced it with? Story? features? not really. Seems like a lot of potato and not a lot of meat. I'll still give it a chance, but it's not instantly captivating.

That's a great story.

I had no idea PikPok made that game. I better check out what other titles you guys have made to see if I have missed anything else as I've been out of the loop with iOS games for awhile. I've enjoyed everything I have played by PikPok.

Breach & Clear impressions (I posted this on TA for the benefit of the devs):

Is there a decent amount of content? It sounded pretty barebones in one preview video I saw. Even if they randomize placements, I wonder how long it'll stay fun.

Can you customize your soldiers any outside of their gear? Names, gender etc.?

A tactical turn based game where I can't have a squad of people named Dude McHugeface and such is not a good game to me. :p (XCOM/ Hunters 2/WHQ woop!)

Only played one mission, seems there are a bunch in different locations, with more to come on the world map. So for example, 7-8 missions in Khabul, with different set ups etc...

Names yes, not gender (no women in Sf outside of Israel). You choose from a selection of faces as well, but they are hidden behind your helmet / mask to whole time.

Then the prospects of having a self-referencial satirically named squad of dudebros might make me purchase the game.

Are there Perma-deaths?

Not died yet, but I doubt it, seems more like WHQ where you just fail if you all die, you can revive downed soldiers as well if you have a medic with the right gear.

Man, Breach & Clear does not seem to work too well on a phone screen. I look forward to checking it out on the iPad later though because although I've only played the tutorial so far, it does show some promise.

You ain't kidding with this one. I really hope they take up your suggestion.

McPixel also has that interactive screensaver characteristic to it. I manage to solve some levels on the first try but most of the time you just tap things and nothing makes sense, which admittedly is part of the appeal. It's pretty funny but I'm glad I got it on iOS instead of Steam, it's way more fitting for mobile.

I'm liking Breach and Clear a lot - for $1.99 it's a definite buy for strategy fans. It plays a lot like a less technical Frozen Synapse, just with the cover mechanics of the new XCom (it even uses the half-shield / full-shield cover icons). You choose 4 of 6 different classes (each has different perks and abilities, like suppressing fire, sprint, grenades, leadership, etc) and take out rooms of perps. You plan out moves, and your entire team moves at once (along with the enemy). Big emphasis on cover fire, being pointed in the right direction, and (naturally) breaching rooms and kicking down doors COPS-style.

Difficulty-wise, I've only played the first 3-4 missions but definitely play on the Standard (hardest) difficulty for more emphasis on cover and being methodical. It feels very "loose," as in it doesn't surface any hit percentages and I'm not always sure how a firefight will turn out. In Frozen Synapse, for example, there is a very specific hierarchy of priority; someone moving will be beaten by someone who is stationary, someone aiming and moving will beat someone who is moving without aiming, etc. In B&C it's much less technical, but the trade off is that I don't feel compelled to spend 15 minutes on every single turn. Enjoying it so far; I haven't messed with anything on the weapons, but not sure whether the balance feels okay as you level up.

I had no idea that money was for grabs for that game. I'm terrible at competitive games, so it likely doesn't matter.

I'm curious about Leisure Suit Larry, is it funny or just corny? Pretty much everyone I've heard talk about it makes it sound like they mostly have fond memories of it because they played it when they were twelve and it was naughty. Is it a legitimately good/ funny game if you don't have nostalgia glasses?

Got Agricola and Tiny Thief per GAF recommendations. First time I do that with an iOS game.

Whoo! Join us in the ios BG thread in Community if you're looking for Agricola opponents. (Though right now we're mainly focused on neuroshima and ascension tournaments.)

It's all just aesthetics really. You could use any jetpack for a high score.

The JJ Wikia says shit like "The Chrome Plated Afterburner is the 2nd fastest jetpack in the game" (without saying which one is the fastest), but that place is a mess and might not be credible.

Unless everything is just blurring together I never noticed a difference!
