Ring a Bell for me
It's almost the end of 2009, so it seems about the right time to have a hoe-down.

So imho, I think 2009 has been a phenomenal year in music. The amount of albums release by artists I enjoy has been staggering, as well as a number of new artists I look forward to hearing more from.

The point of this thread is not to rub your musical e-peen in the faces of others, but to simply share albums you really liked this year. That way, people can maybe discover new music they missed out on. So keep it nice please!

So here's my top 25 for the year, in no particular order:
Music09.jpg

The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Akron Family - Set Em' Wild, Set Em' Free
The Antlers - Hospice
Miike Snow - S/T
Kings of Convenience - Declaration of Dependence

The Whitest Boy Alive - Rules
Noisettes - Wild Young Hearts
Roman Candle - Oh Tall Tree In the Ear
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
The Bird and The Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future

Micachu - Jewellery
Kevin Devine - Brother's Blood
The xx - xx
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast

Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care
Harlem Shakes - Technicolor Health
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
St. Vincent - Actor
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion/Fall Be Kind

Mi Ami - Watersports
Royksopp - Junior
David Bazan - Curse Your Branches
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Beware
Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light

So what were your top albums for the year, fellow Gaffers?

Not a great year, above is what I was really impressed with (one of them isn't even an album). There's a lot of other stuff I'm sort of digging, but it's all kind of mediocre and doesn't belong on a list.

It wasn't a terribly memorable year for me, but after seeing this band live, this album really clicked for me.

Andrew Bird - Noble Beast/Useless Creatures
Ironic that they are touring, and even playing with each other now.

Can't forget

Also, Merriweather Post Pavillion, but people have posted that enough already.

Honorable mentions:
The xx's self titled.
Grizzly Bear - Veckitamest (I liked it, but it doesn't have good longevity.)
Wild Beasts - Two Dancers
I Come to Shanghai's self titled. I want to hear more of them in the future.

This really is one of Mono's crowning achievements, and should be a must for anyone who is into post-rock or emotionally stirring instrumental music in general. It was also one of my favourites from this past year.

A sample for the uninitiated:

Mind you, this is by far the shortest track on the disc. Most of the others run from ten to twelve minutes.

Seeing Miike Snow in the first post warms my heart, they might be hope for some of you yet.

But then no mention of the best Album this year:

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix for me, no contest.

As much as I agree with every one of the O/P picks it's hard for me to not place Phoenix at the top of my list. I was hyped for Grizzly Bear the most due to the early "While You Wait..." performances, but "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" was nearly perfect for me...and really gets me excited for a possible return to form for The Rapture in 2010.

In no order, the albums that stuck with me through this year.

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Girls - Album
Washed Out - Life of Leisure
Flaming Lips - Embryonic

In no order, the albums that I liked but doubt will really stick.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion/Fall Be Kind
The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You
Passion Pit - Manners
Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For The Young
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career

This year was more digging into the past for me, exploring 80s stuff.

what's sad is this thread will devolve into the usual hate thread that usually happens with music threads, mostly due to people picking MPP. oh teh noes, people like animal collective

I haven't listened to much music from this year yet.

Maybe not. I think Kastro is still banned.

I'll make my list after my finals are over, but I'd like to chime in and say this:

god-help-the-girl.jpg

is getting a lot of my listening time, and it's beautiful.

Maybe not. I think Kastro is still banned.

pjberri, lambtron, and Strangelove aren't, though.

but strangelove is cool in my book for the most part because he listens to emeralds

Top five, in order. Had to cut out a lot of good stuff, so I think it was a really good year. Purposely not putting AC even though I love both MPP and FBK since everyone's already listed them.
