Capcom R&D Thinks Mods are Same as Cheating

Capcom R&D recently posted a 50 minute presentation on YouTube discussing things like Mods and Denuvo. The official stance by Capcom for modding their PC games is that it's equal to cheating. Who knows if this will lead to Capcom going on a Cease and Desist tour on the Internet, but their backwards thinking is quite concerning.

Capcom was on such a win streak here on gaf I guess that's over with.

One thing should be noted, is that Capcom never explicitly said they are going to take action against modders or those that install them, but they sure aren't hiding the fact that they think certain mods will cause them to lose money. There are plenty of shitty mods out there for many popular PC games so I don't think this argument holds water. People aren't dumb enough to equate a shitty mod to a Capcom official product. If you look at games like Skyrim and Minecraft on PC the sales only increased because of the freedom PC gamers were given to mod these games. Wake up Capcom!

If they made better games we wouldnt have to mod antialising into Monster Hunter World or upscaling and fov sliders into just about every one of their games.

If the mod is used to cheat in a online match etc then I don’t agree with that, if it is a mod for offline single player etc that improves the game or changes the character design etc then I see no harm in that, I’ve done player custom character mods in sfv and now doing It 6 since capcom seem to just want to sell rubbish avatar costume instead of outfits for the main charachters

Does that mean I can't mod my Arisen to have a big schlong and have a harem of nude women as pawns anymore in DD2?

This makes sense, because they have tried to monetise unlocks and cheats, if people can just mod there game to do the same thing. Also it ruins the message if people can just mod women to be attractive again.

From their preso:
Reputational damage caused by malicious mods

• The image of the product is tarnished when mods are released that violate public order and morals without permission

• Mods can be mistaken for legitimate implementations and can cause bad publicity

Workload due to malicious mods

Customers affected by buggy mods cost support time

• Worst cases include freezes and save data corruption

Investigations take time + are futile even if they turn out to be successful

Delays in the original production of the game due to the time required for research

Support for other users is delayed
These are reasonable points. I understand why Capcom find modding troublesome. They're not wrong to have that view. It's not good business for them.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
At least they can be the same thing and they're both equally harmless, at least for sp.

They also equate anti cheat with anti piracy which is a real issue. Come on Capcpom.

I don't agree with it, but I can why they equate mods with cheating and say tt causes them to lose money. After I beat re2 I looked for a mod to unlock everything because I didnt want to s+ a run, and they want money for that.

Cheating is a scapegoat to cover up the fact that they don't want pornographic mods to represent their RE Engine titles.

If they let this run rampant, then investors will get scared and pull funding. Simple.

imagine you have a girlfriend...and then install a mod of naked Ashley, Jill, Ada, Clarie or the merchant....yeah that's cheating. you didn't do the job to earn it.

If you’re someone who never streams, never tweets, and barely plays online then what’s the point in policing it? This would be for streamers, influencers, and tournament players. Anyone who gets caught in public.

More and more game companies rely on the influencers and social media posts about their games. I kinda miss the old days when they didn’t rely so much on someone else promoting their content. They didn’t have these super fans just to promote their games. The Souls games have that. What was the whole point of PlayStation Underground? Brands got popular and now they rely on their social media image. They give stuff away for free. I don’t exactly want to watch someone else get rewarded.

I never installed a nude mod because why bother when you had games like Dead or Alive? Lol plus the mod websites were full of viruses. Capcom and the video game graphics were completely different back then. We didn’t have robust 3D models with detailed body parts. I guess I understand why they care. I also feel like there’s this “chosen one” feeling going around with all their promotions.

Lol, this is hilarious. Capcom is charging you for mods instead. Treasure maps, better drop rates for items, extra ammo when crafting, etc.

Guess it’s not “cheating” when they can monetize it instead! What a circus. This is as out of touch as the Denuvo videos.

We've rewarded them for their resurgence in quality, consistency, output. I suppose if they want to encroach on our personal time by attempting to decide how we play the game, we could always pull that financial rug from beneath their feet. I know I would.

I get how they don't like having meme-tastic videos being shared of Resident Evil where female characters have comically huge beach ball sized mammories.
However, I reckon they should embrace modding and make it even easier and frictionless. Bethesda games would never enjoy the daily engagement they have if not for modding. Skyrim & Fallout 4 enjoy good numbers just because people can configure them to their precise liking or fetishes.

Mods violate “Public Order and Morals”…. WTF am I even reading?

I guess it must be noted that some laws in Japan around modding and copyright are insanely crazy pro Corporations.

Sigh… and Capcom was doing so well from PR perspective lately.
Have you seen The HL2 Mod?:messenger_grinning_sweat:
