8.0 Presentation
The entire digital atmosphere looks amazing. The menus, even the terms for all the items picked up, all point to the computer theme we're playing within.
8.5 Graphics
Visuals that I'll rave about again and again -- great effects and style. The lack of level variety, however, saps some life away, and there is some slowdown.
7.0 Sound
The guns sounded coo, but I wasn't too excited about the choice in music .
7.0 Gameplay
The random map level design ends up dragging everything down. I wanted to enjoy it, but couldn't when I kept seeing square after square after square.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
The multiplayer mode is definitely worth playing again. I can't say that for the single player mode though, despite the random level generation.

7.0

Higher than i expected.

I like how the comments don't match the scores....

Damn, why couldn't it have just gotten all bad scores, so I wouldn't be intersted at all.....

Gamespot, I'm looking for a 6 or below.....

If the upcoming Ghost in the Shell game for PSP is the story- and character-based Half-Life type of handheld shooter, Coded Arms is much more of the pure firepower DOOM shooter breed.

Yeah that's pretty much on the ball.

Yeah that sounds like a 7.

I played this for a little while. I was expecting far worse. I used control type C in my brief playtest, and with the lock function, I didn't find aiming too bad. There is obviously not a lot of variety with locations, but the point of the game seemed to me to be arcade like clearing combined with the collection of weapons and gear (of which there seem to be a lot). While a lot of the environmental graphics are repetitive, the effects and reloading animations, etc. are quite nice. I could see it getting boring though.

By no means a really good game in brief play but I played GoldenEye on the DS for about the same length of time and I'd rather play this.

I think it is OK...with a level design less boring it would be a great game. Control is fine if you dont expect keyboard/mouse quality.

I am very disapointed in this, I haven't been having very much fun with my PSP and I thought this would be the game to change that. Withthat said, its a decent game but you'll get tired of it after a while.

I guess we'll have to stick to emulators for a while longer...

Yea, to be clear...I was expecting outright filth from the reviews. It's better than that. But it DOES NOT live up to my hopes. I would not buy it for more than $10-15.

I kinda like the random levels and pure emphasis on shooting, although as Musashi said, it's by no means a game worth > $20.

I think it's pretty decent. I'd go $30. Of course, I have absolutely NO ACCESS to emulation, so it's be my only portable FPS fix.

Pff, I hardly took a shit on it. It's a woefully average FPS with crap controls and random map generation that people will either dig or hate. I just couldn't find my shovel.

5.0 is average, right? Coded Arms defines "average", from my brief experience with it.

Calling a game average is kind of a death sentence though. It's not even a total piece of shit curiosity... just average. Nobody wants to buy an average ho hum game.

Maybe 1UP should bail on having a 1-10 scoring range, then.

Personally, I'd use the penis scale:

RAGING BONER
MILD TWINGE
STILL FLACCID
IT'S COLD IN HERE

- and, of course -

JESUS I THOUGHT THAT WAS A CHICK

I hope you've got some middle ground there between mild twinge and raging boner in real life. ;)

Man, why do developers keep trying the 'randomly-generated' level designs for game genras that are run by awesome level layouts.........
Yea in theory "COOL! IT'S LIKE NEVERS THA SAME!" ---------- But give us a well defined playground any day of the week.

I wasn't expecting anything from this game (visually it looked cool) ----- and i'm not very let down at all since PSP had such an awesome launch, I'm still trying to keep up.

But man... level design please.

CONSPIRACY TIME!

IGN's PSP reviews are far more leniant than the GBA or DS channel. I really don't like the idea of the same editors covering a single platform or company. It would even out things if Matt C. could review some Xbox games, if Craig could review some PSP games, and so on.

I've got this one coming in the mail along with Midnight Club 3. Hopefully the loading times on the latter won't kill me.

(Then again, I've been surviving Untold Legends for the past week.)

It seems to come and go by the title. The MC3 review ripped on its problems, although it's final score was still too nice, a minute of loading is just crap. Mercury's was mean, there wasn't much reason to bag on it other than it was hard to get cozy with. There's as much average bunk on both systems that's not worth raving about or bagging on. Maybe you mean when it comes to the big titles? The top DS games have been short-changed in in the press for only being brilliant and not genius. Then again, the games I've bought for DS have felt like 8.5s and low 9s at their best, so I don't feel like cutting slack for my money.

I've always thought Hustler's movie rating scale would translate well to video game reviews (Fully Erect, 3/4 erect, etc). I see you are in agreement, and also that you have a large collection of porno magazines.

Exxy -- post nekkid pics of your ex-gf, or at least give them to Skip to scan. I know they're in that afro someplace.

For my take, Coded Arms is pretty, but it's mostly very average in the negative sense. The weapons and enemies are uninteresting, the gameplay is ho-hum (at best), and the random levels mean that there's no stylish architecture or landmarks to make a person go "cooOOOOoool." People remember certain rooms from games like Halo and Half-Life, because they're gorgeous and cleverly designed. No gorgeous or well designed here, move along.

$20 or less is about right.

None of what brings down Coded Arms is inherent to it being a first-person shooter on a portable game system. The controls, while initially weird, can be adjusted to, and it's one of the better-looking games on the system from a technology standpoint. The problems are within the underlying design, which simply doesn't have a lot to offer beyond a bland, unappealing corridor crawl with similarly boring multiplayer. PSP owners may find a passable rental in Coded Arms, but that's about all. The first-person shooter genre may have a bright future on the PSP, but Coded Arms isn't it.

It's funny how common it is for people point out that the final score isn't the same as the the average, when to the right of score it always says "not an average".

I just watched a video of this game on the latest OPM disc. Looks like decent fun. I may pick this up when it gets to a budget price of 20 dollars. Wish I could rent PSP games. Would like to try it out. Not throwing 40 down on this game though.
