Disco Elysium Studio ZA/UM Cultural Association, Dissolves..key staff members depart sequel

I loved Disco Elysium so that’s a sad to hear. I’m guessing we’ll never properly find out but since it was apparently involuntary I’d be fascinated to hear what happened.

I wonder what happens to that world now. It was one Kurvitz created for a tabletop RPG and had written a novel, Sacred and Terrible Air, set in it. So I wonder if he signed over the rights to the company or if he’s retained it. Also I believe that an English translation of Sacred and Terrible Air was being worked on so I wonder what this means for that.

Also I took the Stalin picture thing to be ironic. Like with Zizek.

I have absolutely no idea what any of this means but if the people that worked on and wrote Disco Elysium aren't working on the sequel I am not playing it.

ok, but I'm sure 3 or 4 people didn't make that game.

They'll be just fine.

I'll buy a sequel so long as it looks solid, reviews well etc. Stop with this sensational shit of exaggerating every fucking departure from a studio as if 1 person makes a fucking game man, its the fakest shit I've seen in gaming. 1 person rarely even writes RPGs like this, its like a dozen lol For example ,God Of War 1 in 2005 isn't even an RPG like this and it had like 4 writers lol

So...I think you where right the first time, you have no idea what any of this means.... MOST teams that on stuff like this don't 100% return for sequels, it won't be some 1.1 thing and I don't think I know of any major release where exactly, 100% the exact same team returned with zero people leaving or something.

Teams in gaming are dynamic, fluid things, they are not exact, ironclad, 1.1 type deals and I don't really know why gamers think this, hear a story like this, the react. Look at the credits of your favorite game, you'll be surprised to see no 1 game in a series actually has the exact same team intact or something.

Kinda dodgy irony to be honest. I mean if they had a framed portrait of Hitler and hashtagged that in, would it be more acceptable because the Nazi dictator was a less successful genocidal tyrant?
Sure. I definitely think it’s an odd choice. I imagine there’s plenty of people who lived under that brutal regime who would take issue with it, even if it is ironic.

But also from playing the game it definitely doesn’t seem like they romanticise the reality of what living under that kind of rule is like. I’m veering into politics here so I’ll leave it there.

I think it’s pretty much obvious they had 0 money , but all the passion. Created something great made through pure passion. However, now they all have millions of millions and for an eastern euro person let a game dev, the cracks in ideology and reality destroyed them.

Lol i do think there is a sizeable chunk of disco elysium fans that get off on the fact that its a “smart” game. Its like souls fans that pride themselves on beating difficult bosses.

It’s probably why the game is so popular in these types of “enthusiast” circles. Add, Immortality to the list.
Putting words into quotes doesn’t make you sound clairvoyant, son. You’re coming off as envious of the upper elites and frustrated by your mundane taste. Get over it and move on.

yeah agree - a bit cringeworthy to keep that opinion, especially when we consider that we get games of this quality of writing so few and far between these days.

Things get this popular when they are good - it's just how it is. I remember when Planescape Torment came out and it was absolutely adored by the more enthused cRPG fans because the writing was unlike any quality that came before it, then the very same vocal minority of similar comments started to creep in more and more as the acclaim cemented.

Don't be that guy who refuses to listen to good music just because it's acclaimed as good and gets popular.. just let people enjoy things.

The game is amazing because of it voice level up system that's really unique, it's crazy amount of directions you can take things, political hilarity and it's characters. Also the art is cool and it's music is hard-core.

Only bad thing was the bad bugs and the fact they will let you soft lock if you don't have money on a certain day to pay your rent and your forced to sell some cool side content items which sucked.
Lol dude you get to stay at the fish shack for FREE unless you didn’t know that , or something happens to it. Money is almost worthless anyway because the things you can buy are pretty shitty, save it for a rainy day. There’s no reason to “soft lock” like that.

A shame. Disco Elysium had its flaws (like showering you with tons of text and sophisticated language when it wasn't needed), but it was still a very unique game and it's going to be remembered 10 or 20 years from now just like people bring back Planescape Torment during conversations.
Sophisticated language??!! Have you never read a novel above high school reading level?

It’s worrying that you might say “those are some $5 words for a $1 problem”.

People that think that game is smart have never read good literature.

Fish shack isn't available yet, this is a known soft lock, I think it's on day 2 (day 1 you are covered) if you have no money past a certain time you are fucked. I remember looking up everything to fix it and the only answer was selling items to get money, the developer even knew about it and didn't give a shit really. I was pretty pissed I had to sell two side quest items to sleep to continue the game. For a game all about choice it was really odd they let that happen. It's telling how good the game was that I kept playing after almost softlocking and losing hours of progress to awful bugs.

I’ve played and (almost) beaten Disco Elysium and enjoyed it for the most part. The only reason I didn’t finish is because the main quest glitched and by the time i picked it back up i was too thrown off my tasks to want to progress. I played well past getting my badge and jacket back and getting my other house to stay in.

Doesn’t change the fact that the people that shout the most about the game exude the same pretentiousness as the type of people that brag about beating difficult games (which i also like) which happen to make up a large amount of gaming enthusiast circles.

Sure ignore the successful applications in most modern western nations. Then we can call it a complete failure.
even the devs championing said system agree with brian0057 brian0057

Created by the founder of the Revachol Commune Kras Mazov, communism is in a dire state by the time you get here. The Commune of Revachol was crushed by the powers of the moralist Coalition, and most of what you would call "real communists", along with their anarchist friends, were shot by, as Mazov himself would say, capitalist bootlickers. The left wing is now led by moderate social democrats and socialists. Now this ideology is only represented by student book clubs and old, decaying philosophers. Only 0.000% of Communism has been built. But... Who knows? Maybe with your help, it will be 0.001%?

I can't wait to see how you mention the typical Nordic nations as examples of success.
While at the same time ignoring that those same nations explicitly say they're not.
If you have purely communism on one end and purely capitalism on the other, they fall in the middle.social safety nets in a capitalistic market. Even us (me an blue blooded American) falls on the spectrum as neither purely either but socially moving left towards more social in our safety programs. A pure system of either ideology can’t work.

Ignoring the fact that this is an indie game and actually was written by one person (it is based off his book), I don't think this is even true in general. Sure an AAA sequel like Ragnarok can easily continue on because AAA games are designed by committee and focus groups, but even the 2018 remake would turned out very differently without Balrog. Not to mention the countless series that have basically died once key people/devs left (Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Halo, hell it is the same with movies just look at Terminator).

There are thousands and thousands of games I can play, why do I want to stick around playing a series that has turned into someone's fanfic trying to be like the original? Particularly in this specific case where the game has such an expansive and detailed setting with an insane amount of lore and a very clear creative vision. Ragnarok is still likely going to be good, hell there are a lot of games that would still be good with another developer working on it, but I have zero faith in Disco Elysium 2 still being good.

Exactly.

It's time we deny the arts to leftists!

"Then it had to be made into a system that ten writers can use. Currently, ZA/UM comprises 35 in-house developers, so writers comprise nearly a third of its overall headcount "

and

" A team consisting of eight writers"

The lolz... I'd stick to the whole "I have absolutely no idea" thing....

I mean yeah, the dialog would have a team of writers helping because the game has a crazy volume of text... I guess I shouldn't have suggested that he literally wrote every word because that is obviously unrealistic for any creative work. That doesn't really take away from the role of Kurvitz though - Fukushima wrote the optional codec calls in the first three Metal Gear Solid games, does that mean Kojima could have been easily replaced for the series? Actually there is an answer to that because Kojima did try to pass Metal Gear Solid 3 to his team and step away from the series, and they failed and he had to come back and rescue it.

Well, one could also just post that they didn't like it instead of posting edgelord takes that are way over the top in criticizing the game.

I haven't even played this thing and was taken aback at how dumb that post was lol

Yes, and every field of art must be kept in check by sane people lest it turn into postmodern wankery or commercialistic dreck.

It's almost as if you need a healthy balance!

This is, uh ... I dont even know what to say, man

A studio in 2022 with a Stalin photo on the wall is some wild shit

I'm playing the game right now and enjoying the heck out of it.

This is already one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm sad that we wont have another one.

But these things are lighting in a bottle most of the time anyway

I've said it before, but if an indy dev shouted out Nietzsche and Fritsch at the Game Awards, and took an "ironic" picture with a portrait of the man with the tiny mustache, they would be immediately blacklisted out of the industry.
