as you can see from this modified chart (thank AniHawk for #'s'), a lot of Sega's "regular" games have done really well on GCN, and it's not just these games, it's stuff like God: DAMM, Viewtiful Joe, A Wonderful Life, etc...

I think they should put Jet Set Radio Future, Panzar Dragoon Orta, and GunValkyrie should be on GCN (now that they've got their "moneyhats", more likely in the form of endless TV ads, from Microsoft and hopefully contract exclusivity is over) regardless of how they did on XBox...

while their sports games have done a lot better on PS2 and XBox, the only way they will challenge the dominance of EA is to be on all systems...

having gone with the $20 price point this year, it would have been a perfect time to get back on GCN and try to get sales from budget gamers (many moms and dads buying Cubes for the kiddies)...

What has happened to Sega? They make some damn good games, they just don't sell. For instance, I was just playing Sonic Advance 2 on the pooper. That's a good game.

Japan+US = SSMB> Halo

That is not far tho, seeing as EU is Halo's second biggest region.

I'm pretty sure on a worldwide scale, Halo and SSBM are just about even.

Halo:
Japan: 80,000
US: 3.25 million
Europe: 1 million
WW: 4.3 million

SSBM:
Japan: 1.287 million
US: 2.267 million
Europe: 800,000
WW: 4.4 million

Again, I'm completely speculating on EU for both. In the WW numbers, I pretty much rounded up though.

I think your Halo number is a bit low. As of the end of December, Halo had cleared four million copies worldwide on Xbox alone. (sold through to customers, not to stores - Bungie specified). Halo has sold over 400,000 copies in the US alone since then (my archive was nuked, but it's slowly being rebuilt). I'd say its world wide is closer to 4.7 million.

I'll agree, but I wonder how well it's sold in Europe, or if Bungie was counting bundles.

I got 4.824 million on SSBM, and 4.8 million on Halo a second go, but I kept deleting the data, so I'll just post this.

The only wild card here is Europe. I wonder why there isn't any sort of solid number for Europe.

These aren't published by Sega, which is why I don't count them, but here you are:

F-Zero GX: 209,560
Shenmue II: 162,480
PSO EI&II: 65,148

Rez still managed to outsell Nightshade? Amazing.

F-Zero GX deserved MANY more sales than that.

It just had a price drop, and shot up by over 10,000 last month. I'm guessing it might pull 300k by the end of its lifecycle at least.

And Nightshade will outsell Rez next month. Rez sold something like 64 copies in May (I'd like to know where there are stores which still sell new copies of Rez).

It looks like putting Sonic Heroes on all the platforms was a smart business decision but I still can't help but feel the game suffered a lot because of it. Sega should have axed the Xbox version and just done the PS2 and GCN ones. Or even better just the GCN one. Also NFL2k3 didn't sell that bad at all. It's obvious the Cube works well for some Sega properties. Billy Hatcher didn't match the likes of Monkey Ball or Sonic, but he didn't do poorly at all. And considering he came out during a very business Fall transition period. I hope Amazing Island can get some attention before the onslaught of titles this August.

Most of the game sales for NFL 2K3 happened when the price dropped due to ESPN Football's release. It was dropped to something like $9.99, and that's where about 150,000 of the sales came from.

I'd expect Sonic Heroes 2 to be on GC and PS2, if that game makes it out.

I see. Cube owners will never show sports games any love, will they? I mean those NHL and NCAA sales are below pathetic. I could have launched a better campaign to encourage just the people I know to buy the games and it would've equalled those sales (most likely exceeded them). Oh well, we always have the strong graphically breathtaking futuristic racing genre covered...err...which nobody buys either. ... ... ... I guess there's Sonic. There's always room for Sonic.

From looking at these numbers, one could make a strong argument that Sega's hardcore fans went with Gamecube this generation. However, the casual Sega fans seem to have migrated to the PS2, with the Xbox grabbing the leftovers.

Sonic Team has fallen from grace faster than almost any other developer I can think of. This has been a horrible generation for them. In short, they are going to have to work much harder if they aim to please me in the future.

If it weren't for the dissapointing Monkey Ball 2, I would say that AV has been batting a thousand. F-Zero and Super Monkey Ball 1 were absolutely fantastic.

I think they should put Jet Set Radio Future, Panzar Dragoon Orta, and GunValkyrie should be on GCN

1) Gunvalkyrie would not be possible on GC as it stands. The controls are too complex for the GC controller and use functions not even present on the GC pad (such as clicking of analog sticks for boosting).

2) They wouldn't really sell any better, especially since you can buy them on XBOX for under $10 a piece (and as low as $5).

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Wow... I don't feel bad for saying this since I turned in my Sega fan membership a couple years ago... But content-wise, Sega's games are sh!tty (w/ a few exceptions) compared to previous years.

I think it's time to bid farewell to the blue hedgehog as well.

I think a large part of the game not selling is because the controls were thought out very well. I can understand what they were going for, but they should have been mapped out better or just redesigned.

The game design was flawed and frankly some of the multiplayer modes fell flat on their face (why would they remove the previous Monkey Target maps?)

The single player mode in particular is just horribly designed. At one point I was really close to finishing Monkey Ball 1 on hard mode without losing a single ball, but don't even think about it in Monkey Ball 2. "Launchers" anyone? Too much luck with a huge helping of trial and error.

Funny thing is that I didn't think there would be any way to screw up a sequel to Monkey Ball. Somehow they did the impossible. Monkey Ball 1 and F-Zero are fantastic though, and are both tightly designed.

You know... for not having nearly as big of a userbase as PS2, Sega sure did well on the Cube. =)

BTW- FZERO GX/AX is the best Sega game in the last 5 years easily... :rock
