***Please read the rules regard spoilers below.***
Game of Thrones is a television series on HBO based on the bestselling A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. Game of Thrones is an epic, high fantasy series about the fight for control of Westeros which was inspired by The War of the Roses in medieval Europe. Though it's been labeled as fantasy, Game of Thrones is more about the struggle for power and family dynamics than it is about typical fantasy tropes like magic and elves. As co-producer and writer David Benioff put it: “If you have to just pick one word to describe it, it’s the word ‘power’ and how it affects those who are pursuing it, and how those who already have it try to retain it, and how those who are caught in the crossfire between the two are mutilated in the process.” In addition to complex characters living in a well thought out and developed world, the story boasts plenty of violence, sex, and other adult oriented content.

The fifth season premieres Sunday, April 12th at 9PM on HBO. The 10 episode season 5 will largely adapt the content from “A Feast for Crows” and “A Dance with Dragons”, the fourth and fifth books in the ASOIAF series, respectively.

HBO’s Press Release on Season 5:
HBO said:
Jon Snow is struggling to balance the demands of the Night’s Watch with those of
the newly arrived Stannis Baratheon, who styles himself the rightful king of Westeros.
Meanwhile, Cersei scrambles to hold on to power in King’s Landing amidst the Tyrells
and the rise of a religious group led by the enigmatic High Sparrow, while Jaime embarks
on a secret mission. Across the Narrow Sea, Arya seeks an old friend and a fugitive
Tyrion finds a new cause. And as danger mounts in Meereen, Daenerys finds that her
tenuous hold on the city requires hard sacrifices.

SPOILER RULES:

- ABSOLUTELY NO BOOK SPOILERS. It doesn't matter if they're under spoiler tags, they should not be in this thread. Use the other thread for book-related television discussion. This includes alluding to things, subtle hinting, comparing the books to the show, etc...

- Regular TV thread rules apply:
  • Once something airs in the US on the East Coast, it's fair game. Feel free to discuss anything that has aired without using spoiler tags.
  • Anything that hasn't aired yet should be spoiler tagged including information from HBO previews, loglines, trailers, interviews, and a few other places.
  • Speculation from people that haven't read the books is fine and encouraged.

- For the non-book readers using this thread:
  • If you have any questions about plot points or want clarification on something, feel free to send a PM to any of the helpful volunteers (see below) and ask them.
  • PhoenixDark
  • foxtrot3d
  • Brakke

- For the book readers that want to lurk in this thread:
  • No taunting or teasing:
e.g. "Oh, just wait until you guys see what happens to him next week!!!"
  • No leading questions:
e.g. "What do you think will happen to this character by the end of the season?"
  • No comparing the book to the show:
e.g. "Well, that's different than in the book where they..."
  • Answering questions is fine when the information is readily available from what has aired on the show.
e.g. Q: "Wait, how is Robb related to Ned?" A: "Robb is Ned's son."

The bottom line is that this thread was created for people that haven't read the books to enjoy and discuss the television show. Keep their interests in mind and let them enjoy the show on their own terms without constantly pestering them. In general, there isn't a good reason for book readers to post in this thread. Thanks for your help.
I strongly recommend that you subscribe to the appropriate thread and use your subscriptions page to visit the thread.

  • Winter is Coming

MOD EDIT:
A brief word on how we’re going to handle the Game of Thrones leak going forward:

There’s a passage on piracy in the Terms of Service that is written with respect to Gaming Side, and this more or less gets carried over to the OT for television, music, and other media. If you want to discuss the business implications of the leak for HBO, what this means for them going forward, and the mechanics of how they might have been stolen from the network, this is fine.

Linking to pirate download sites, directions on how to get torrent software and the like to work, reviews and impressions of pirated content, talking about how you're currently watching/plan to watch illegally obtained episodes, and anything else like that is strictly prohibited. Obviously, posting spoilers from the leak is going to cop you a lengthy ban, as well. This applies for any television show that we talk about in the OT.

All discussion of this subject is being redirected to this thread. You should not bring up the leaks in either of the two main Game of Thrones threads. The primary reason for this is avoid derailing threads that are intended for discussion of the television show as it airs on HBO as scheduled. We're going to keep those threads on track as best we can.

Hope that makes sense. Please contact moderation if you have specific questions.

Please take the time to read the spoiler rules carefully. Book readers should use the other thread or be prepared to take a lengthy ban.

Posting this in the OT, but it bears repeating I think:

I strongly recommend that you sub to the thread and visit it through your subscriptions, so we can minimize the incidents of people accidently reading/posting in the wrong thread.

Such an awesome stretch of time, this one. Mad Men, Daredevil, and Game of Thrones. Good lord.

Cannot wait to see this.

Nice OT. Incredibly excited for this. Feels like it's been ages since season 4.

Good advice here. Saw a lot of people post in the season 4 thread that they went into the other thread by mistake and were spoiled.

Wait there is no "helpful volunteers" listed below. If you make a list you can feel free to put me on it.

Finally, I was waiting for this Season 5 NO book spoilers thread to show up.

With the show outpacing the books, is this the last year we'll have 2 separate threads on GAF?

It's better to keep them separate, trust me.

So, uh, where the hell is HBO Now. I was going to watch this through that, since they said itd be here before the season. I'm really paranoid it won't be now. This is cutting it close.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
I love how you guys do TV threads... only GoT related thing I ever get near on the internet. Because I trust the (really smartly created) rules will be enforced and any asshole spoiling shit will get their account nuked from space without delay.

Thanks for your efforts people. And special mention to Cornballer, the keeper of gaf TV threads for so long.

Ah ner nuthin'.

Can't believe its this close...but then the 10 weeks WILL pass...and then...another 42 with only rewatching the old ones...OH NO!

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
My body may or may not be ready.

The show is finally starting to eclipse my knowledge of the books (only read the first 3). Exciting times ahead I'm sure.

What?? After least season's cliffhanger? What is this bullshit.

Any link would probably spoil you, but basically they said they've run out of book material for Bran, and anything else wouldn't be parallel to the other characters' timelines.
