HBO has officially greenlit Lewis and Clark, a six-hour miniseries that will chronicle the pair's exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. Starring Casey Affleck as Meriwether Lewis and Matthias Schoenaerts as William Clark, Lewis and Clark has even bigger names serving as executive producers. Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton are among seven people backing the miniseries. It's based on the book Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, who also wrote Band of Brothers — another project Hanks famously helped bring to HBO in collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

Production is scheduled to start sometime this summer, but there's no word yet on when it will begin airing on the network. Late last year, it was reported that HBO was putting out casting calls for Montana natives. Casting directors were seeking out people familiar with speaking Native languages including "Shoshone, Nez Perce, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Blackfeet, Chinook, Clatsop, Walla Walla, Sioux and Shawnee." John Curran (The Painted Veil) will be directing the miniseries and sharing writing duties with Michelle Ashford (The Pacific) and Norton. Here's HBO's synopsis of what viewers are in for:

Cool, hopefully they explore their time with Pocahontas exploring the Mississippi River. It's nice to have some content from the 17th Century.

Seriously, though, it sounds like a good idea for a series.

Nice to see Matthias Schoenaerts getting casted more in the US. You don`t see that many Belgian actors in Hollywood.

I wonder what it will be like.

He was great in Rundskop.

It is true. We only had three real famous Belgian actors and only one of those is really known as Belgian. For Jean-Claude Van Damme we all know he is Belgian, but for Audrey Hepburn and Johnny Galecki it is just a footnote in their careers.

Some casting news over the last 2 months

The Army is growing in HBO’s miniseries Lewis And Clark. Brendan Fletcher (Gracepoint), James Cutler (Kick- Ass 2), Rob Aramayo, Devin Harjes (Daredevil, Gotham), Tim Plester, Tyson Ritter, and David Wilmot have been cast as members of the Corps of Discovery, the expeditionary group led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, played by Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts, respectively.

Based on the book Undaunted Courage, by Stephen E. Ambrose, Lewis And Clark tells the story of America’s first contact with the land and native tribes of the country west of the Mississippi River. The miniseries follows the epic journey of the Corps of Discovery and its captains, Lewis (Affleck) and Clark (Schoenaerts), who traverse uncharted territory on a mission to deliver President Jefferson’s message of sovereignty as they search for his fabled all-water route to the Pacific. Cast also includes Josh Stewart and Parker Croft.

Lewis And Clark is executive produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Tim Kelly and Adam Leipzig.

Biggest question for me is who plays Sacajawea? She is essentially the 3rd main character.

Also,
Stephen Hill, Creed Garnick (Vanya And Sonia And Masha And Spike) and Aidan Kahn are the latest to join the cast of HBO miniseries Lewis And Clark.

Hill, is York, William Clark’s life-long slave companion and a member of the expedition.

Nice! First I am hearing of this. I have been wondering when he next HBO historical miniseries would materialize. It's been too long.

What has it been 2010 and The Pacific?
