We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Besiege - $6.99 (PC)
KnightMincerGifBig.gif
http://www.besiege.spiderlinggames.co.uk
Medieval vehicular chaos, polished, bloody, and just a ton of fun. Of all the vehicle construction games I've played, Besiege is easily the most competent and enjoyable, between its lovely presentation, super-simple building UI, and tendency to descend into complete chaos as physics work their evil magic on your rickety wooden war machine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. io - Free Demo / $9.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
tumblr_ngf7guTqz71tlfdr5o1_250.gif

http://www.desura.com/games/io

A fun and challenging physics puzzle-platformer, that revolves around size manipulation. From that simple mechanic, the developers craft myriad tricky levels and interesting uses for your ability, as you use weight and momentum to navigate through portals and gravity fields, push around obstacles, brace against tight corridors, wall jump, and more. iO isn't groundbreaking in any way, but it's a competent and well-made game worth your time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Infinifactory - $24.99 (PC)
nKu14io.gif
http://www.zachtronics.com/infinifactory/
What can be said about Infinifactory that hasn't been said already. It's 3D SpaceChem, that expands on that already-deep foundation by adding height and depth and wealth of new mechanics and complexities. It's the same satisfying meticulous planning and puzzling, the hypnotic rhythm of working solution in action, now on grander scope and scale
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. Echoes+ - Free (PC, Mac)
echoesplus_2.png

http://www.binaryzoo.com/echoesplus_page/

Stuff like this is why freeware games on PC rock. A frenetic, frantic arcade shooter, with tons of content between the various modes and difficult levels. Controls are tight, the gameplay is challenging and each mode offers a unique twist on the core evade-and-blast action. Flashy visuals make every round of high score chasing a spectacle of color and explosions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. Avernum 2 - $19,99 (PC, Mac)
WhpzT32.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/337850
Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is an epic, indie, fantasy role-playing adventure in a unique, massive world. The subterranean land of Avernum is full of strange caves, cunning dungeons, and the alien inhabitants of the underworld. Explore a massive, underground nation of tunnels and caverns, packed with over 100 towns and dungeons. Fight to complete up to three distinct game-winning quests.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5. Earthtongue - $4 (PC, Mac)
pOa%2BpR.gif

http://erichermit.itch.io/earth-tongue

Its one of those games that deserves to be celebrated for being different and focussing mainly on player curiosity. Its the closest a game I ever played came to an ecosystem simulator and its pretty terrific at being that. You need to explore the different plants and animals and how they work with each other and then try to work on building a sustainable ecosystem. Its really something entirely different from the mold (ha, fungus joke) of most games and is a great example of the hidden gems that this thread series strives to search for. Deserves your money (or pay by art, guys.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. Quasi - $2.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
n1AqSCn.gif
http://prominent.itch.io/quasi
Quasi is a side-view platformer style adventure game with puzzle elements. Explore a strange world seized in mystery and discover what lies beneath its surface. in the first 2 levels, you'll spend the most time just figuring out what the mechanics actually ARE. What are your powers? How do different level elements react to each other? Very similar to Fjords/Starseed Pilgrim in that regard. After you got the hang of it, the game throws a surprising amount of levels at you, which I had a blast solving. Yes, buy and play this game guys. Also take your time and dont give up right away if you cant figure out the rules within 10 minutes ;) Make sure to maximize the windows size.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
So I got my hands on the Rain World build that will be playable at PAX and available to backers soon, and just...wow
Now of course take all my Rain World impressions with a grain of salt since I'll be the first to admit that I'm biased toward hyping the game up.
But wow, the game has grown incredibly since the first backer build. That build was one region, a few lizards types. This one is four regions, larger than the original pre-Kickstarter Lingo build, and has new species like the vultures and improved lizards. One of the coolest things is that every creature is unique: vultures have different hues and lizards vary in size and have different accessories like spines, ridges, tail turfs, frills, etc.
Put it all together and even those it's still an alpha, the game is so impressive. The world feels alive. Enter a room and you might see lizards of the same species fighting for dominance or hunting other lizards. A vulture swoops down from above, going for that lizard that was hunting you, while a second vulture descends to fight over the now-dead lizard. The world is more detailed and more atmospheric. It's one thing to see GIFs but to see it all come together, in motion, in-game, is something else
Here's a great moment that happened.
Sorry for the poor video framerate
And this is only four regions out of a planned 12, with more lizard species and new creatures and slugcat pups to come
Okay, Rain World gushing over
This month is packed!
Yep, I still find it kinda weird, how the January thread was so "dull" in terms of interesting releases and February, March and likely event the April threads are all packed with highlights.
Anyone play Aaru's Awakening yet? Loved the demo, hoping the complete game lives up to that level of fun and promise
I havent yet, but I do hope someone can give full impressions.
Also: that picture above reminded me of that 4D game Miegakure again:
http://miegakure.com/
Apparently there is a non-public demo. I'd love to try that.
It's going to be hard to choose what to buy
Its even going to be hard just to go through this months 70 title list. You are right though, many games look very interesting.
It's going to be hard to choose what to buy
Already pre-ordered Hotline Miami 2, debating whether to get Shelter or Ori.
Actually I got into comics recently, so I've been spending more on comics than games. Preacher is amazing.
As for mobile indie stuff, This War of Mine is hitting iPad this spring. And if you're into IOS games, I recommend checking out Dark Echo from this month's OP
I thought I made it 73 games in the highlighted new releases from last month - a lot are not going to get played and there are some well tidy looking games :(
My oh my. That's a long list of games.
Ha, the unwritten motto here is practically "Too many games, not enough time"
I tend to find something new and interesting every day. The output of the indie scene can be pretty overwhelming to keep track of
My oh my. That's a long list of games.
On top of what Baddy just said, many people in here also just go by recommendations of others who go through more titles. I and some others try to tackle 50-70% of the games each month and then recommend stuff to the others here for example.
Catacomb Kids
Catacomb Kids is my favorite in the subgenre of Roguelike-lite-whatever Platformers (you know: Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, Risk of Rain, Vagante, etc.) Gameplay is where Catacomb Kids shines. Compared to Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, or Towerclimb, Catacombs Kids is all about careful exploration and smart planning. Platforming is a means to an end, a skill to be used, rather than the focus. Your character is very agile, able to roll, hang from ledges, crawl along the ground, swim, lunge at enemies from afar. Finding spellbooks allow you to choose a spell to learn, from flight to teleporting, fire wave to plague, chain lightning to enhanced speed.
What makes Catacomb Kids feel so fun is how reactive the world is. You can use the environment to your advantage in unique inventive ways. Knock down a torch to burn enemies without getting close or throw a mushroom into a pool to poison the water. Lure enemies into traps, or throw rocks to reveal a trap's location. You can drink a potion or boil it on a fiery surface to turn the contents into a area-effecting cloud. And then fill the empty flask with the water you poisoned before with the mushroom, and then boil it to make a cloud of poison. You can eat corpses or even your own severed limbs for health.
The game still feels early due to the lack of content (only one area and two classes), but the core gameplay is tight, fun, and challenging
Dark Echo
Dark Echo boasts the most minimalist of visuals, instead conjuring horror from the unknown and unseen and an atmospheric soundscape. Massively expanded and improved from the developer's Ludum Dare entry You Must Escape, Dark Echo is a sound-based horror game.
A black screen, with your white footprints the only color amid the surrounding dark. Every level in Dark Echo begins this way. Move forward and lines emanate in all directions, the sound of your footsteps visualized, bouncing off the walls and revealing the environment. Without sound, you are blind. Your goal is simply to find the exit. However, that task is easier said than done, because you are not alone in these passages. Things lurk in the darkness, drawn by the sound of your movement. Hunting you.
What's most impressive about Dark Echo is how it builds on its core mechanic of seeing through sound. The beginning levels lay the foundation: walk around to reveal the surrounding, stomp to send out a larger wave of sound that lets you see more of the level. Soon you're introduced to the creatures that are attracted by sound, followed by the fact that you can tap slowly to take soft silent steps and throw stones as distractions, turning Dark Echo into a tense game of cat and mouse where sound is your only means of sight. Water that amplifies your footsteps and slows your movement, switches, crushing walls, deadly terrain, and more add to the challenge and complexity of later levels.
Reassembly
Between Besiege and Autocraft, I've been on a physics-based vehicle building binge lately and Reassembly scratches that itch nicely. Set in the expanse of war-torn space, you construct your vessel and set out to build your fleet and activate ancient stations across the world, among other objectives. Physics play a big part in designing your ship; everything from size to the position of your thrusters affect your movement and maneuverability
What makes Reassembly so interesting is its AI and visuals. Varied factions battle regardless of your interaction, retreating for reinforcements when being overwhelmed, flanking, etc. As you build up your fleet and acquire more parts, the battles become larger and more hectic, until you have numerous ships and factions battling simultaneously, as lasers and missiles and bullets streak across the screen. It's a spectacle of color and explosions and flying parts. Reassembly isn't the deepest or most complex game, but it offers a fun construction mechanic and a reactive space world to explore and affect.
Hyphen
Set against a neon vector background, you guide a rotating line through a gauntlet of obstacles and hazards from narrow tunnels to moving platforms. It's a time-tested mechanic, that frustrates and challenges due to the need for perfect timing and narrow margin for error, and rewards patience and skill. Hyphen adds an arcade-y challenge to the familiar Kuru Kuru Kururin formula, with bullet patterns to rotate between, spiked crushers, lasers, saw blades, and other fiendish dangers.
Strength of the Sword 3
Strength of the Sword is all about gameplay. The loose story of defeating an ancient evil is merely a framework for challenging, flashy combat against punishing enemies. This is a game where knowing your enemy, learning their patterns, mastering countering and parrying, when to block an attack and when to dodge then move in for a combo, is all critical to success. Button mashing is only a quick way to die; this isn't God of War. Mastering Strength of the Sword requires precision and practice. Rather than facing hordes of enemies, you only fight a few at a time, the challenge coming from handling each enemy's strengths and skills. Armed with a selection of swords, shields, support items like throwing knives and grenades, and your repertoire of combat maneuvers, you dance around your foes, rushing up with leaping stabs, deftly dodging and blocking, moving in to deliver combos and mana-charged attacks on staggered enemies. It's fast-paced, tough, and satisfying.
JET/LAG
Made for the Procedural Generation Jam 2014, JET/LAG is described as a "Hyper Minimal Rogue-like-like-like featuring unforgiving tactical gameplay". What does that mean?
You're a square, dropped into random arenas of dangerous geometric foes, each one with own unique behavior that you must learn how to avoid. Pick-ups imbue you with special abilities such as homing drones and a close-range electric attack, but your main means of attack is ramming into enemies. The controls and objective are simple - click to move in that direction, clear the level - but add the varied enemies and different skills and JET/LAG evolves into a fast-paced game of evasion and close calls as you move in close to ram your foes while also dodging laser-firing triangles, charging squares, homing projectiles, and more. It's a fast, frenetic, and addictive challenge.
Somerville - http://somervillegame.tumblr.com/
omg o_O
The Mix at GDC 2015 has had some really cool games that I've heard of for the first time.
Reflections - FPA coming of age game with a system narrative. Basically, Boyhood The Game.
Hac - FPA car driving sim
Somerville has such an ingenious narrative hook: the framework is a teacher telling ger elementary school class about the story of the hero who arose and turned the tide against the alien invasion, while you play as Somerville during the invasion. The narrative possibilities of that are just endless. Contrasting the idealistic textbook story told to the kids with the brutal reality of what actually happened.
Overland - Summer 2015 (PC, Mobile)
More of this art style pls.
Overland was also shown at The Mix. Basically, XCOM + Kentucky Route Zero.
For 2D action platformers, there was Chasm and Axiom Verge. Interesting that the Axiom Verge guy had a speedrunner friend and made some changes to suit that.
Jetpack Squad (made by only 2 Russian dudes) was there too, wow at the fluidity of animations and particles. Not to mention rather than being of the defense like most schmup games, you can go offensive by using parts of the enemies and throw/shoot back at them.
Seasons After Fall is not only really pretty (by former Ubi Montpellier dev, Benoit and more), but changing seasons at any time makes for cool puzzles.
Yes, tell Messofanego to come in here more often, so he can do more of those posts. YOU HEAR THAT, MESSOF?
Chrome is making these threads nearly impossible for me to participate in. I'm also pretty behind on games. I did finally make a video of The Next Penelope.
The dev of Earthtongue is still working on a major update, including Terraforming! I'll be getting an early look at it since I found so many bugs in the first release (oh boy am I good at finding issues) but it's not ready yet, he's going for one big update over a couple smaller ones.
I also did a video of Hot Tin Roof, it's more metroidvania and less sam and max than I initially expected, but a good mix of both. My biggest complaint is the map is very complex and 3D, and there's not presently an ingame map (and I don't even know how it'd work). Dialog is pretty witty though and exploration is fun until you get stuck.
Jetpack Squad looks great, excited for that. Intrusion 2 was much better than I expected, great bosses.
Yeah, not quite sure what to do about that, other than a Chrome setting like Baddy suggested or a different browser. We cannot really leave out the pictures from the OP, that would make the thread a bit pointless.
Hope you find a solution.
Actually the preferences are through GAF, not a Chrome setting.
I don't know if you can do it on the desktop version, but on the mobile site, you can edit your preferences to hide GIFs and/or images. Looks like this when hidden
That might help
Yeah, I use that on mobile, but can't really make (larger) posts from mobile and I need to see gifs to check out games anyway. I probably just need to bite the bullet and swap to Firefox. Might be better for my surface pro 3 anyway, I hear Chrome is hell on battery life and it seems to randomly use too much CPU too.
Why can't you make long posts on mobile? I type my longer posts in Notes (not sure if you're on IOS or not) and copy/paste here
Is it all GIFs or just when you enter a thread like this, where you have a ton of GIFs on the same page?
What are the recommended exclusive indie games on both ps4 and Xbox one? Any list?
Exclusives? Everything published by Sony Santa Monica, seriously--Flow, Flower, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Hohokum, lots of amazing, truly unique stuff. Got to be the best console-exclusive indie publisher out there. Velocity 2X as well, though that's coming to PC and Xbox One eventually. Axiom Verge is another great timed exclusive (it'll surely be on PC eventually but PS4/Vita first for months).
Counter Spy is good, not great, a level or two below those others. I also liked Futuridium (my video), but it's hard and has fairly limited controls. I think most people don't like it as much as I do. There's a free, worse version on PC as well (missing the boost, and the PS4 version has progression/remixed levels/more modes/more music). Futuridium has crazy good music though.
Drawing a blank on other PS4 exclusive indies, but there's tons of great PS4 and PC stuff (Transistor, Apotheon) but I don't think that's your question. If you have a Vita I'd recommend Murasaki Baby, great, weird game. I've been meaning to do a blog post or something on Playstation indies, a pretty good selection out there, especially if you're without PC.
But yeah, this thread is usually about PC indies with little buzz around 'em. Most but not all indies that make it to console usually have a modest buzz around 'em.
These are all anecdotal recommendations, since I have neither a PS4 or X1.
 • #IDARB on X1 is/was free on XBLG and sounds like a great multiplayer game
 • OlliOlli 2 just came out on PS4 and is supposedly great.
 • I've heard good things about Kalimba on X1, which despite what Wikipedia says never seems to have arrived on PC.
 • Resogun and really anything by Housemarque on PS4 are easy recommendations.
That's all I can think as far as exclusives. Most indie stuff hits PC first, so there isn't a lot that's only on consoles at the moment unless it's published by Sony (and to a lesser extent, Microsoft).
Three things:
First - this month is shaping up to be fantastic. Not only all the games in the OP, but the stuff coming out this month is incredible.
Just TODAY on Vita and PS4 we got Helldivers, La Mulana EX, OlliOllie2, Poltergeist: A Pixelated Horror, Q*Bert: Reloaded, White Night (which is actually Activision...) and Starwhal. Along with Olli Ollie 2, Oddworld New 'n' Tasty and Counterspy for free. I'm saturated.
Second - Toma, have you already pre-ordered Cities?
Thirdly - I saw a patient arrest for the first time ever in theatre today. She's fine, but wow. What an experience.
I'll take some time tonight and comb through the list (which is actually extremely handy and convenient). Til now, I've only dabbled with indie games that I got to know "passively", i.e. seeing ads, getting recommendations etc. seldomly have I actively searched out stuff.
Time to get my hands dirty.
